Online Card Catalog Now Available for All Parents

Looking for a good book to read with your kids this weekend, but you don’t have time to go to the library?

Want to cruise the selections in your school library, but your schedule doesn’t fit with school hours?

Then discover Destiny Online.

Destiny Online is an electronic card catalog available to all* parents in North Kansas City Schools. It has information about every book in every school library. High school and middle school parents have had access through the student portal for several years, but now anyone can access Destiny Online through a quick and easy online log-in process.

How to Access Destiny Online:
The process is simple.
  • Go to the district Web site: http://www.nkcsd.k12.mo.us/
  • Click on “PORTAL”
  • Type in User Name: nkclib
  • Type in Password: nkclib
  • Select your school.
  • Click on the “Catalog” tab.
  • Search: by keyword, title, author, subject, awards, reading level, interest level.
Or, click on “Top Ten” to see what selections are most popular at your school.

“This is a great way for parents to partner with their kids on reading,” said Jill Smith, library media coordinator for the District. “They can make the decision together, build excitement for the book, and explore literature together,” she added.

Restricting Access:
Another benefit of Destiny Online is that parents can have a say in what books their student does not check out. If there is a title in the school collection that you do not want your student to bring home, parents can restrict that title, and he/she will not be allowed to check it out.

If you find a book you want to restrict for your student, all you need to do is identify the book by title and author, put it in writing, and send it to the school principal. The principal will then share that information with the librarian and other appropriate staff (i.e., classroom teacher, reading teacher, etc.)

Reading Events:
Access to Destiny Online couldn’t come at a better time. In coming weeks and months, there are several special reading events to engage readers of all ages. Your school library can be a book source for each of these activities.

January – March RAFT Reading Aloud Family Time (http://www.mcpl.lib.mo.us/)
March 2 NEA's Read Across America Week (www.nea.org/readacross/)
April 2 International Children's Book Day (http://www.usbby.org/ or http://www.ibby.org/)
May 10-16 National Children's Book Week (http://www.cbcbooks.org/)

*The only exception is North Kansas City High School. Because of the cooperative library with the City of North Kansas City, they have a different online card catalog system. Parents and the general public can access it at: www.northkclibrary.org/
