the turkey has left the oven

The self-same moment I could pray;
And from my neck so free
The Albatross fell off, and sank
Like lead into the sea.

Ah, Thanksgiving is a great day to send off a paper, especially one that had developed a certain discomfiting, crushing-psychological-burden character to it. Of course, now I have to take up all the things I had kept at bay while working on it.

They say changing anything in academia is like moving a cemetery. (They say this because changing things in academia regularly involves overcoming nearly-insuperable institutional inertia, not because changing things in academia is a necrophile's bonanza.) Still, I can't help but wonder if somehow, someday, sociology might change its citation style for books. The style right now:
Healy, Kieran. 2006. Last Best Gifts: Altruism and the Market for Human Blood and Organs. Chicago: University of Chicago Press.
Obviously, you need to have the author's name, the year, the title of the book. The publisher, fine. But the city where the publisher is based? Why? Who has, in the past 10 years, made any use of that information for any purpose? What conceivably could it be used for? I'm tired of wasting time trying to figure out whether presses are based in New York or not. Guilford, yes. Westview, no (Boudler, CO). And when publishers move (e.g., Sage), do you use the location when the book was published (which would make no sense except its what's on the title page) or its current location?

Also, given that we are the discipline that teaches "if situations are defined as real, they are real in their consequences" in our intro classes, can't we maybe adopt a journal practice that would convey that we define ourselves to be doing importantly, timely, potentially scoopable work. Namely, printing the date submitted and date accepted on articles, like journals in all kinds of other disciplines that fancy having researchers who may sometimes discover things do.

Anyway, the albatross is off, and I'm done carping as well. Happy Thanksgiving!

Trae and Guerilla Maab Join with L.E.A.P. to Feed HungryWillie D in Finland!Photos from Damage Control

Well opinions seem to be mixed on how I should post the show up here ont his here thang. I'll try to do it both ways tonight and see how it works out. Thanksgiving show should be pretty real, lots of people generally in town stopping by to see us.

But first.

Trae and company are joining forces with L.E.A.P. tomorrow (Thursday, Thanksgiving) to feed the hungry in Third Ward. Here's the official release:

Our organization, Ladies Empowering All People (L.E.A.P) along with G-Maab Entertainment, will be in the Third Ward community in Houston, TX feeding families in need on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23, 2006. My boy Joro from Finland just sent me these three photos from Willie D's show in Helsinki earlier this month!

Willie D was super excited. It was his first show overseas and he got to see how people who respect the arts react when they meet a genuine artist. The club was sold out, and on the same night 50 Cent was playing across town. Someone came up to him and said "People went to see 50 Cent because he is hot right now, but this club here is sold out because you are a legend."

Two times for arts in the schools.

And I plum forgot that I had taken photos at Damage Control. Then I looked at the camera and said WTF LOL LMAO STFU KIT SSS. Yep. Send.

DJ Chill cold rockin' it.

Yes I suppose I will be on another street dvd looking stupid.

This is KB, the dude who made "U Wired Up" and "Box or Get Chopped."

Unique of the Grit Boys

Scooby and Bohagon

And a better, more coherent version of the same pic.

Anyway y'all, I'm off to gorge myself with the family. Give thanks for all you've got (every day) and some of the things you don't have. That's the true meaning of this Thanksgiving horseshit. I'm not about to sit and celebrate the slaughter of a race of people, the enslaving of a race of people and the perpetual "US VS. THE BROWN PEOPLE OF THE WORLD" war thang.
