"FATS WALLER" in .............TIN PAN ALLEY CATS: A CENSORED ELEVEN CARTOON
Last week I was surprised by a film fragment, while searching for a "Fats Waller on film" fragment. To be honest - I hadn't expect to find something "new", as the fragments, in which Fats Waller participates on film are limited to four shorts and some film fragments. That's why I was surprised to find this fragment of a 1943 Warner Bros' cartoon titled Tin Pan Alley Cats.
This cartoon was published during the wartime in the US as a Warner Bros.' Merrie Melodies cartoon. It contains some great music made by an unknown orchestra and unknown artists. The lead character is a caricature of Fats Waller.
In the film "Fats Waller", of course I mean his caricature, goes out for a night Down Town, but when he wants to enter a club a preacher of a gospel choir outside the clubs warns him for the "wine women and songs", but Fats laughsand brushes it, with his typically raspy voice, aside: "Wine women an' song? What's de matter wid dat?". He goes inside the club and enjoys what's inside, but the music gets him and the whipped up rhythms bring him in "Jazz Wackyland"- "the world of evil." When he awakes ........ he understands that this isn't the place to be for a decent "cat", runs away from the club and becomes a member of the gospel choir.
This film, Tin Pan Alley Cats, is one of the "Censored Eleven", eleven cartoons with racial caricatures of African American and Japanese that could offend. In 1968 these films were banned for American Television and are still notreleased on US DVDs. It is a fact that the cartoons are filled with ingrained prejudices and discrimination about African-Americans and jazz music, so if you watch these cartoons try to view it as historical documents; as documents published during the 1940s, when this was a rather "accepted" way ( in white men's society) to think about blacks and its music jazz. Of course, I'm happy times changed now, but the music is pretty good, so I love to share this rare cartoon with you. Nederlands-Vlaams ( To the English section with Fats Waller in Tin Pan Alley Cats; a Censored Eleven cartoon )
SPIKE HUGHES ( 1908 - 1987)Op 19 oktober 1908, honderd jaar geleden, werd in Londen Patrick Cairns Hughes geboren, bijgenaamd Spike. Hij leerde zichzelf de bas bespelen en begon zijn (korte) muzikale carriere ( die maar een viertal jaren zou duren) in de Night Watchmen. Zijn eerste opnamen onder eigen naam maakte hij met de Decca-Dents.
Hij reisde rond met het orkest van Jack Hylton en speelde, met zijn eigen band, onder andere twee concerten in ons land ( waar zijn platen erg populair waren), hoewel hij vond dat zijn groep eigenlijk meer een studioband was en niet iive op het podium hoorde, in de club waar ze optraden. Het concert in de studentenclub in Scheveningen viel hem dan ook zwaar, maar de live radiouitzending in Hilversum ( de enige keer dat hij op de radio live met zijn band te horen was) ging een stuk ontspannender. Bedenk dat in 1930 nog maar zelden deze muziek hier "live" te horen was. Rond 1932 - begin 1933 vertrekt hij naar de Verenigde Staten en richt daar zijn All American Orchestra op, met daarin artiesten als Coleman Hawkins en Henry Red Allen. Begin jaren dertig begint hij ook te schrijven over jazz in bladen als de Melody Maker en hij wordt schrijver over allerlei onderwerpen. Gevolg is wel dat hij na 1933 stopt met spelen. Zijn laatste opnamen dateren uit 1933 met zijn Negro Orchestra en als je naar zijn muziek luistert ( hij maakte in die vier jaar toch nog heel wat opnamen), dan is het is vreselijk jammer geweest dat hij zijn bas aan de wilgen gehangen heeft en zijn muziek zich niet verder heeft kunnen evolueren. Ik wil graag zijn laatste opname laten horen van mei 1933, getiteld How Come You Do Me Like You Do? met zijn Negro Orchestra waarin een keur aan gerenomeerde jazzmusici zaten, zoals Henry Red Allen, Dickie Wells, Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Wayman Carver, Chu Berry, Red Rodriguez, Lawrence Lucie, Sid Catlett en Spike Huges, leider en deze keer ook zelf op bas. Henry Red Allen is verantwoordelijk voor de zang.Even genieten ...............
Spike Hughes overleed in Londen februari 1987. De tekening is gemaakt door Boy Ten Hove in 1938: een Nederlandse tekenaar, die honderden karikaturen maakte van jazzmusici te gebruiken in kranten en tijdschriften. Deze tekeningen zijn verzameld en beschreven door Ate Van Delden in het boek Boy ten Hove's Caricatures (Drawings of Jazz Musicians 1935-1940) (2006)
