'This is the definitive anthology of pioneering ethno-musicologist, mystical adventurer & real life jazz guru Dr Lloyd Miller. This album tells the fascinating life story of one man & his journey through Europe and the Middle East, living off nothing but his wits, talent & an open-minded attitude towards musique and jazz. Master of dozens of languages and hundreds of instruments, Miller has spent fifty years immersed in the music of Europe, Asia & the Middle East. Featuring recordings taken from incredibly rare privately pressed albums, live sessions in Europe, and previously unreleased material, A Lifetime in Oriental Jazz tells the story of his extraordinary personal journey from the West Coast to the Far East. Played on a plethora of exotic instruments from around the world, Miller's music is a unique blend of jazz with the modal and spiritual sounds of traditional Asian and Middle Eastern music. Spiritual jazz, Eastern jazz - direct from the source.' ~ further
by request, this one features some seriously dope santur, in addition to oud, persian piano, sarod, clarinet & tabla. Dr. Miller, a California native, is also fluent in Persian, Dari, & French. He received his doctorate degree in ethno-musicology from the University of Utah, wrote his thesis on 'Music & Song in Persia' & also lived 7 years in Tehran, Iran. Miller was trained under Iranian jazz masters Dr. Daryush Safvat and Mahmoud Karimi. He even had his own prime time network jazz show in Tehran. i initially heard the good doctor, along with Ndikho Xaba and the Natives on the seemingly forgotten but eminently listenable spiritual jazz compiltion from a few years bach. a real thing of beauty. highest imaginable recomendation. 320 thanks to the original illuminator[s]
