 Ruud Gullit had played his first game of the season the previous week and, although he had confessed to being 'only 70 per cent fit', the Dutchman played in attack alongside Marco Van Basten against the strong Benfica side. Magnusson, scorer of 33 goals in the Portugese league, and Valdo were their counterparts for Benfica. The newly-refurbished Prater Stadium was the venue for the much anticipated clash. The game was a tactical battle, with Milan making futf use of their expertise in the offside trap and the long pass-back to keeper Galli, a different team from the exuberant side of last year's Final. Benfica had most of the attack, in particular the impressive Brazilian Valdo whose running with the ball and skilful passing and turning kept Costacurta and Ancelotti on their back feet. Milan, however, were still dangerous. In the 39th minute, Gullit found Tassotti and the full-back's cross was met by Van Basten, whose shot was well saved by keeper Silvino. 

 Four minutes into the second half. Van Basten passed to Gullit with only the keeper to beat but Gullit's snatched shot was stopped by Silvino. It was then Benfica's turn to go close, when a 25-yard shot from Valdo beat keeper Giovann Galli but went just wide of the post. In the 62nd minute, Costacurta picked up a ball from Filippo Galli and fed Van Basten. whose pass through the Benfica defence was met b> Rijkaard who smashed the ball into the net wide of the keeper. 1 -0 to Milan. Benfica brought on forward Vata Garci. to replace midfielder Vitor Paneira, but the Portuguese side had left it too late. Gullit could have added another in the 78th minute but elected to hit a good chance well over the bar and, although Jose Carlos nearly caught out keeper Galli with ten minutes to go, Milan held on till the final whistle. The skill of Van Basten, the midfield power of Frank Rijkaar and the tireless defence of Costacurta, Baresi and Maldini had ensured that Milan's name was on the trophy for the second year in succession. Unlucky Benfica, who had provided strong and determined competition to the Italians, had now suffered their fifth defeat in seven European Cup Finals.
