Last weekend, the North Sea Jazz 2010 festival, scheduled from Friday the 9th up to Sunday the 11th of July, 2010 was characterized by the tropical temperatures inside and outside the halls and, of course, the FIFA World Cup 2010 Final between the soccer teams from The Netherlands and Spain and as you might know: Holland reached the second position and Spain was one but last.Bob Brookmeyer (North Sea Jazz Festival 2010 - Rotterdam) ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

I visited the festival on Saturday, the 10th of July, 2010. Like most festival in the past, the Hudson hall is for me the place to be - the first concert was by the Bob Brookmeyer New Art Orchestra.

Bob Brookmeyer, now in his 80s, suggested to start a new project: to install air conditioning. Although known for playing the valve trombone in the 1950s with great names like Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz, Clark Terry, as one of the founders of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis band and conductor of the Danish Radio Big Band, he only played his instrument for a small intro in the first tune - as the leader of his New Art Orchestra he conducted the band sitting on a high chair with his back to the audience marking the accents of the music with some finger snaps......

All tunes played that evening were compositions by Bob Brookmeyer, or as he said: I'm involved with most of them. Most compositions had great harmonic structures - personally I love to hear a more swinging big band .... Well, never mind - Ruud Breuls, our Dutch trumpet player and member of the New Art Orchestra learned that he is a great soloist. Bob had dedicated one of his compositions to his grandson, whose birthday was celebrated in Rotterdam. He surprised his grandfather during the concert with a bouquet of flowers........

The second band at the Hudson was the Ornettte Coleman Quartet. Ornette, now 80 years old, was the Artist in Residence of the festival- On Friday he performed with an original member of his trio Charlie Haden and the son-of the late Dewey Redman, Joshua Redman.

At the Saturday concert he played with his regular quartet featuring Al Mac Dowell on electric bass, Tony Falanga on double bass and his son Donardo Coleman on drums. Ornette is a legendary alto saxophone player who upset and divided the jazz scene during the 1960s with his new free style music experiences.

Now, fifty years later, he sounds more sophisticated ( or did my ears changed?) playing his white alto saxophone and trumpet ( and violin on one tune), but he still loves to surprise the audience.Mari Okubo (North Sea Jazz Festival 2010 - Rotterdam) ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

What to think about the Japanese vocalist Mari Okubo, who has, Ornette Coleman says on her website, one of the most beautiful voices coming from a human being. Mari seemed to look out for the permitted limits of the audience, imitating a fufu zela or what so ever .....

The third band that was scheduled at the Hudson, seemed to be a small All-Star band itself: Bobby Hutcherson on vibes; Cedar Walton at the keys; David Williams on double bass and Eddie Marshall on drums.

Bobby Hutcherson, one of the last of the vibes players is known for his part in the classic Eric Dolphy album Out Of Lunch and his Blue Note albums, like Dialogue and Night in Barcelona ( with Hariold Land). Nine years ago I heard him before with the McCoy Tyner-Bobby Hutcherson Quartet, at the Congresgebouw in The Hague.

Cedar Walton, which I heard before with Roy Hargrove ( Porgy en Bess - February 1998) and the Johnny Griffin & Roy Hargrove + Cedar Walton Trio at the Congresgebouw in The Hague ( July 2002), performed in the past with names like J.J. Johnson, Hank Mobley, Clifford Jordan and still is a sought after accompanist.

David Williams performed in the past with great names like Charles McPherson, Duke Jordan, Archie Shepp, Ornette Coleman, Art Pepper, Slide Hampton, and, of course, with Cedar Walton.

Drummer Eddie Marshall played with Charlie Mariano, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Dexter Gordon and recorded with Bobby Hutcherson, like on the 1977 Blue Note album "Now".

Bobby Hutcherson learned that he is still a gifted instrumentalist, fighting against his asthma ( It seemed that a fan near his feet didn't bring much lightening), joked with the audience and had them laughing, while the rhythm section learned what great musicians they are. It was, for me, one of the high lights of the evening.

Visiting the North Sea Jazz Festival means that you have to make choices. So I missed some great concerts I loved to have joined, like the Kenny Barron Trio with David Sanchez which played for a packed Madeira hall and the David Sanborn - Joe DeFrancesco - Steve Gadd trio. I've heard parts of these concerts and I'd love to hear more - a good reason to return next year.

I was just in time to join the presentation of the award ceremony of the Dutch Jazz Competition. The winner of this prestigious award for young jazz players was The Castel / Van Damme Kwartet. Jasper Van Damme, born and raised in our region Zeeland ( like Rik Mol, Jan Menu and the Feen Brothers) also received the Norma prize for Best Soloist 2010. I hope to hear these four promising musicians ( Thierry Castel (piano), Jasper Van Damme ( saxes), - Sven Happel (bass) and Mark Schilders ( drums) once in concert.

Each year ten thousands of jazz fans world wide look forward to visit the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. It's the biggest jazz indoor festival in the world. On Saturday the 10th of July, 2010 the Hudson hall in the Ahoy building in Rotterdam was for me the plays to be. I joined three concerts with only great names as a living encyclopediae of jazz history: Bob Brookmeyer, Ornette Coleman, Bobby Hutcherson and Cedar Walton. I love to look back to that evening ..... Afgelopen weekend stond in het teken van het 35ste Northsea Jazzfestival ( 9 t/m 11 juli 2010) en de finale voor de wereldbeker voetbal in Zuid-Afrika. Ik bezocht het festival op zaterdag 10 juli 2010. Voor mij was de Hudsonzaal deze keer the place to be, omdat de programmering grote namen beloofde - een reis door de geschiedenis van de jazz. Het eerste concert was dat van het New Art Orchestra o.l.v. Bob Brookmeyer.

Bob Brookmeyer, nu een breekbare oude man van in de tachtig ( maar eenmaal op zijn kruk een inspirerend bandleider), suggereerde om als eerstvolgende project te kiezen voor ........ airconditioning gezien de tropische temperaturen in de zaal een prima suggestie. Hoewel beroemd geworden door zijn spel op de ventieltrombone in de jaren vijftig met musici als Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz, Clark Terry, the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis band ( hij was één van de oprichters) en dirigent van de Danish Radio Big Band, bleef het instrument, behoudens een korte intro op het eerste nummer, in zijn houder staan.

De stukken, alle composities van Bob, konden me niet allemaal boeien, maar solisten zoals onze eigen Ruud Breuls op trompet lieten horen begenadigde solisten te zijn. Zittend op zijn hoge kruk, met zijn rug naar het publiek, schijnbaar moeiteloos het orkest leidend ( met een vingertje werden haast achteloos de accenten aangegeven) werd vooral appèl gedaan op de schitterende harmonische verbanden en slechts af en toe werd het publiek getrakteerd op swingende big band, iets wat ik graag hoor. Eén van de composities werd speciaal uitgevoerd vanwege de verjaardag van zijn kleinzoon, die opa, na afloop, verraste met een bos bloemen.

Het tweede optreden in de Hudson was het Ornettte Coleman Quartet. Ornette, nu 80 jaar oud, is Artist in Residence, was inhoudt dat hij tijdens het festival in een aantal concerten te horen is. Zo speelde hij op vrijdag met Charlie Haden, bassist uit zijn beroemde trio en met Joshua Redman, zoon van de onlangs overleden Dewey Redman, die ook deel uit maakte van Coleman's groepen.

Tijdens het concert van zaterdag speelde hij met zijn reguliere kwartet met Al Mac Dowell op elektrische bas, Tony Falanga op akoestische bas en zijn zoon Denardo Coleman op drums. Ornette is bij leven al een legende vanwege zijn experimentele opnamen uit 1960 waarbij hij de toenmalige jazzscene in beroering bracht en een stijl creëerde, die de freejazz zou gaan heten.

Nu, vijftig jaar later, klinkt zijn muziek iets meer gepolijst ( of zijn onze oren veranderd!), maar weet hij met zijn witte altsax en trompet ( en incidenteel de viool) toch nog steeds met zijn optreden het publiek te verrassen. Wat te denken van de Japanse zangeres Mari Okubo, volgens Ornette Coleman One of the most beautiful voices coming from a human being (= Eén van de mooiste menselijke stemmen). die hij als speciale gast had uitgenodigd en die met haar stem als een fufu zela de grenzen van het toelaatbare opzocht.

De derde band op het Hudson-podium was bijna een All-star band te noemen: Bobby Hutcherson zittend achter zijn vibrafoon; Cedar Walton aan de piano, David Williams op bas en Eddie Marshall op slagwerk.

Bobby Hutcherson, één van de laatste van de grote vibrafonisten, hij speelde ooit mee op het klassieke Eric Dolphy album Out Of Lunch, is vooral bekend geworden om zijn Blue Note platen, zoals Night in Barcelona ( met Hariold Land) en Dialogue. Negen jaar gelden hoorde ik hem al eens bij het McCoy Tyner-Bobby Hutcherson Quartet, toen nog in het Congresgebouw in Den Haag.

Cedar Walton, die overigens, las ik, met zijn kwartet al op het eerste festival in 1977 present was, is voor mij ook geen onbekend meer. Ik hoorde hem eerder in Porgy en Bess bij Roy Hargrove ( februari 1998) en het Johnny Griffin & Roy Hargrove + Cedar Walton Trio in het Congresgebouw in Den Haag ( juli 2002). Hij speelde in het verleden met bijna alle grootten in de jazz ( J.J. Johnson, Hank Mobley, Clifford Jordan en Roy Hargrove om even een onvolledig lijstje te maken en dat vooral omdat hij zo'n geweldige begeleider is.

David Williams, ook zo'n gezochte muzikant vanwege zijn solide basspel begeleidde namen als Charles McPherson, Duke Jordan, Archie Shepp, Ornette Coleman, Art Pepper, Slide Hampton, en natuurlijk, Cedar Walton.

Drummer Eddie Marshall speelde met Charlie Mariano, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Dexter Gordon en is o.a. te horen op de Blue Note plaat "Now" van Bobby Hutcherson.

Bobby Hutcherson, pontificaal gezeten achter zijn reusachtig instrument, liet horen dat hij nog steeds een begenadigd instrumentalist is - grappen makend met het publiek maar vechtend tegen zijn astma ( een ventilator naast hem op de grond bracht weinig verlichting), wist hij het publiek in te pakken en af te leiden van de vaak schitterende solo's van de ritmesectie. Dit concert was voor mij één van de hoogtepunten van de avond.

Als je kiest voor het Northsea betekent dit onvermijdelijk keuzes maken en aan sommige concerten kun je dan alleen maar ruiken en wellicht concluderen dat je een kans hebt laten liggen. Eén zo'n concert, waar ik even achterin van kon genieten was dat van het Kenny Barron Trio met David Sanchez, die in een volgepakte Madeira speelde en het David Sanborn - Joe DeFrancesco - Steve Gadd trio, waarbij ik alleen nog een plaatsje helemaal achterin op de tribune kon scoren - niet de meest comfortabele plek om van zo'n optreden te genieten. Volgend jaar beter denk ik dan maar .........

Bij toeval was ik precies op tijd in de Volga om daar de bekendmaking en uitreiking bij te wonen van de Dutch Jazz Competition. De winnaar van deze belangrijke aanmoedigingsprijs voor jong Nederlands talent werd het Castel / Van Damme Kwartet. Jasper Van Damme, geboren en getogen in Zeeland ( net als overigens Rik Mol, Jan Menu en de Feen Brothers) ontving eerder de solistenprijs 2010. Ik hoop deze groep, met Thierry Castel (piano), Jasper Van Damme ( saxen), Sven Happel (bas) en Mark Schilders ( slagwerk) een keer live te kunnen zien spelen.

Het Northsea Jazzfestival behoort voor tienduizenden jazzfans uit Nederland en verre omstreken tot een vast ankerpunt in het jaar. Zaterdag 10 juli 2010 waren in de Hudson zaal in het Ahoy complex in Rotterdam een aantal indrukwekkende concerten gepland waarvan ik er drie bezocht. Een terugblik op een tropisch heet Ahoy met Ornette Coleman, Bob Brookmeyer, Cedar Walton en Bobby Hutcherson - een rij namen die thuis hoort in een eregallerij van de jazz.

Als je het leuk vindt om te lezen over dit soort legenden uit de jazzgeschiedenis, maar ook over nu geheel vergeten helden uit een ver verleden, vraag dan de nieuwsbrief.

Het Northsea Jazzfestival 2009 vond dit jaar plaats van 10 tot 12 juli 2009 in Ahoy Rotterdam. Honderden concerten, honderden artiesten en tienduizenden bezoekers uit alle delen van de wereld. Op vrijdag 10 juli 2009, de dag dat ik het festival bezocht, waren er zo’n 18.000 bezoekers en dat voelde comfortabel – geen “dichtedeur” concerten – geen overvolle wandelgangen; op zaterdag en zondag was het aanmerkelijk drukker: zo’n 25000 mensen per dag en het festival was dan ook uitverkocht.

Eerlijk gezegd …….. het concert van Hank Jones, dat gepland stond op het Northsea Jazzfestival, was voor mij één van de belangrijkste redenen om dit jaar voor de vrijdag te kiezen. Afgelopen jaar zou Hank zijn 90ste verjaardag vieren op het Northsea in een concert met Roberta Gambarini en Roy Hargrove, maar moest toen het concert aflassen vanwege gezondheidsproblemen. Dit jaar was hij er gelukkig wel ……… zonder Roberta en Roy, maar met zijn trio waarin Georg Mraz en Willie Jones III.

Hank Jones werd geboren in Vicksburg, Mississippi op de laatste dag van juli 1918 als de oudste van een stel muzikale broers: Thad en Elvin. Thad Jones werd bekend als trompettist en bandleider van o.a. de Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra ( haar opvolger stond, wat een toeval, als Vanguard Jazz Orchestra gepland in het voorafgaande concert in diezelfde Hudsonzaal) en Elvin Jones kreeg bekendheid als slagwerker bij o.a John Coltrane. Ik heb hem, vlak voor zijn overlijden, mogen zien optreden met zijn Jazz Machine, op ditzelfde Northsea Jazzfestival, in juli 2002 nog in Den Haag.

Hank Jones groeide op in een muzikale familie in het stadje Pontiac in Michigan, hoewel zijn vader, die streng religieus was, jazz absoluut niet zag zitten – zeker niet op zondag: He thought Jazz was a bad influence because back then it was associated with places of ill repute and people of questionable backgrounds ( = Hij zag Jazz absoluut niet zitten, aangezien het toendertijd werd geassocieerd met plaatsen van verderf, bevolkt door mensen met een twijfelachtige reputatie.), citeert Don Quellette Hank in het begeleidende boekje bij de CD For My Father. And he was right. I was always running into people like that, but I was also able to disassociate myself from that part of the scene ( = en hij had gelijk. Ik kwam in contact met dat soort mensen, maar het lukte me om er niet bij betrokken te raken). Hij ging als professional spelen, op het eind van de Tweede Wereldoorlog bij Hot Lips Page, waarmee hij in november 1944 op een serie Continentals zijn platendebuut maakte. Zijn eerste opnamen onder eigen naam maakte hij voor Clef in 1947. In de jazzscene van New York speelde hij met musici Coleman Hawkins, Howard McGhee, Andy Kirk en Billy Eckstine. En hij speelde in de beroemde Jazz at the Philharmonic concerten, georganiseerd door Norman Granz. In april 1952 speelde hij met de JATP in het Kurhaus in Scheveningen en een paar dagen later in het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

Sinds de jaren vijftig speelde Hank mee op een ontelbaar aantal opnamen en hij werd een geliefd begeleider voor jazz en andere populaire muziek. Eén van zijn laatste platen maakte hij met Roberta Gambarini, getiteld You Are There; de muziek die vorige jaar op het Northsea centraal had moeten staan.

Hank Jones had deze keer zijn trio meegebracht naar Rotterdam met George Mraz op bas en Willie Jones III op slagwerk. Georg Mraz, de in Tsjechië geboren bassist, begon zijn carrière in de jaren zestig bij het S & H Quartet ( genoemd naar Spejbl en Hurvínek, die de club exploiteerden, waar ze vaak optraden) en is, sinds die tijd, in heel wat ritmesecties op platen terug te vinden. Het was schitterend om hem eens in een kleine bezetting bezig te kunnen zien. Willie Jones III, jarenlang slagwerker bij Roy Hargrove, is een welbekende gast in de Porgy en Bess jazzclub in Terneuzen; de laatste keer dat ik hem zag speelde hij bij Roberta Gambarini in maart 2009. De Romeinse III achter zijn naam is om zich te onderscheiden van twee illustere voorgangers, beide jazzmuzikant en Willie Jones geheten.

De meeste nummers die het trio speelde, waren standards uit het American songbook, zoals dat heet; nummers als Blue Minor, Lady Luck, Recorda-me, Lament, Stella By Starlight en Round Midnight. Het werd een memorabel concert, van een 91-jarige gigant op de toetsen, die nog steeds moeiteloos een volgepakte zaal muisstil weet te krijgen; wat jammer dan, dat het irritante gerampetamp vanuit andere zalen doordringt tijdens de stille momenten.

Ik wees in een eerdere blog al op het feit, van de strenge beveiligingsvoorschriften en het feit dat “gewone mensen”geen digitale camera “met afneembare lens” mee naar binnen mochten nemen. Jacques Los, redacteur van de jazzblog Draai Om Je Oren zag zich zelfs genoodzaakt het festival helemaal te boycotten. Gelukkig was ik vroeg in de Hudsonzaal aanwezig en maakte ik de soundcheck mee van het drietal. Het is goed te weten, dat ik een T-shirt aan had, met daarop de hoes van de LP “Something Else”; de plaat, die 50-jaar geleden door Cannonball Adderley met zijn kwintet werd opgenomen met o.a. Miles Davis, Hank Jones, Sam Jones en Art Blakey. Toen Hank Jones na de soundcheck het podium verliet ontdekte hij mijn T-shirt en stak zijn duim omhoog. Mijn dag kon niet meer stuk………..

The North Sea Jazz Festival 2009 was scheduled on the 10th up to the 12th of July 2009 at Ahoy in Rotterdam. hundreds of concerts - hundreds of artists and ten-thousands of visitors from all parts of the world joined the festival. Friday, the 10th of July 2009, when I visited the festival, 18,000 visitors made it feel comfortable – on Saturday and Sunday, with almost 25,000 visitors each night, the venue was jam-packed. To be honest ……… Hank Jones’s planned concert was one of the main reasons to decide for a Friday visit to the festival. Last year he would have celebrated his 90th birthday with Roberta Gambarini and Roy Hargrove, but he had to cancel that concert due to health problems. This year he was scheduled with his trio featuring Georg Mraz and Willie Jones III.

Hank Jones was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi on the last day of July 1918 as the eldest one with two musical brothers, Thad and Elvin. Thad Jones became famous a trumpeter and band leader of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra ( its successors, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra were playing the previous concert at the Hudson) and Elvin Jones became known as a skilled drummer in recordings and performances with great names as John Coltrane. I heard him in a concert with his Jazz Machine, at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, July 2002.

Hank Jones raised into a musical family in Pontiac, Michigan, although his father, who was deeply religious, didn’t like him to play Jazz, especially on Sunday: ……. He thought Jazz was a bad influence because back then it was associated with places of ill repute and people of questionable backgrounds: Don Quellette quotes Hank in the liner notes of For My Father. And he was right. I was always running into people like that, but I was also able to disassociate myself from that part of the scene. He started to play professionally after the Second World War with Hot Lips Page. He is to be heard as pianist in the Hot Lips Page Septet on a Continental recording session ( November 1944). In the New York Jazz scene he learned other jazz musicians and performed with them: Coleman Hawkins, Howard McGhee, Andy Kirk and Billy Eckstine. And he became part of the famous Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts, organized by Norman Granz. He made the first recordings under his own name in 1947 for Clef. In April 1952 he played with the JATP at the Kurhaus in Scheveningen ( The Hague) and a few days later at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

Since the 1950s up to now, Hank Jones played in innumerable recording session and became a sought after accompanist for both jazz as non-jazz musicians. One of his latest recordings is an album with Roberta Gambarini, titled You Are There; the music of that album should have been spotlighted in last year canceled concert at the North Sea festival.

Hank Jones brought his trio to Rotterdam with George Mraz on bass and Willie Jones III on drums. Georg Mraz, the Czech-born bass player, who started his career in the 1960s in the S & H Quartet ( named after Spejbl and Hurvínek, who runned the club they played) and is to be found in the rhythm section of numerous jazz (hard)bop albums. Great to hear him playing in this small setting. Willie Jones III, drummer in Roy Hargroves groups for years, is a well known guest at the Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen (south west part of The Netherlands) and the last time I heard him was in the Roberta Gambarini concert March 2009. Being the third Willie-Jones-in-jazz he uses the Roman III to indicate that.

Most of the tunes played by the trio were standards like Blue Minor, Lady Luck, Recorda-me, Lament, Stella By Starlight and Round Midnight. It was great to learn how these great musicians could get the audience as still as a mouse – only the irritating sounds from the near by concerts were disturbing.

I pointed in a previous blog to the severe security measures and the fact that the ordinary visitor were not allowed to bring in a professional camera. Jacques Los, blogger of the (Dutch) Draai Om Je Oren blog even had to boycot the festival. Well, to make some pictures I was early in the Hudson, when the men were doing some sound checks. You should know that I wore a T-shirt with the cover of the Cannonball Adderley “Something Else” cover, the 50 years old Cannonball Adderley recording, on which Miles Davis, Hank Jones, Sam Jones and Art Blakey play as side men. When Hank Jones returned back stage he saw my shirt and he gave thumbs up – it made my day
