In a jam-packed house the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw went crazy in a two-set concert at the Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen, in the south west part of The Netherlands. Heb je't opgenomen, Kees? (= Did you recorded it, Kees?), leader Henk Meutgeert asked the sound technician, after the opening tune Two Brothers, We hebben het nog nooit zo goed gespeeld. (= We never played it as good as this time) - Let's make a new album tonight: The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw: Live at Porgy en Bess.

We zijn hier al zo'n drie keer eerder geweest (= This is our fourth time to play here in Terneuzen), Henk remembered. Toen moesten we nog met de boot hierheen komen, dat gaat nu een stuk makkelijker met de tunnel. ( = We had to take the ferry boat then, now we can take the tunnel, what makes it more comfortable to reach this place). In January 2000 and November 2001 the Jazz Orchestra performed in the club with great names like Benjamin Herman, Jesse Van Ruller and, in January 2000 with Jan Menu, the baritone saxophone player, raised in this part of Zeeland, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, and in 2007 the band accompanied Greetje Kauffeld at the festivities due to the clubs 50th birthday.

The line up of The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw reads like a who-is-who of the Dutch Jazz scene of the XXIst century: Jorg Kaaij, Marco Kegel, Simon Rigter, Sjoerd Dijkhuizen and Juan Martinez in the reed section; Ruud Breuls, Jan Van Duikeren, Rodolfo Neves, Jelle Schouten and Rini Swinkels on trumpet; Bert Boeren, Andy Bruce, Martien De Kam and Jan Oosting on trombones, Martijn Van Iterson at the guitar, Peter Beets at the piano and Frans Van Geest and Marcel Serierse in the rhythm section. Right in the opening tune, a Simon Rigter composition, Two Brothers, the audience learned that the band felt like fancy to play in this famous club in the southwest part of The Netherlands, with solos by piano player Peter Beets, who even liked to insert phrases of the stride piano, and the sax section, with both Simon Rigter and Sjoerd Dijkhuizen as the "Two Brothers". Special guest at the concert was trumpet player Tom Harrell - one of the best trumpet players of the world. Due to a handicap, Tom suffers a serious form of schizophrenia, which makes that he has to use heavy medication, was born in Urbana Illinois. He started to play the trumpet at eight and he finished the Stanford University with a grade in composing. He could start his career after he finished Standford in the Stan Kenton orchestra and during the 1970s he toured with the band of Woody Herman and the group of piano player Horace Silver.

When he plays his trumpet his problems seem to disappear. His style of playing is very melodic and he was influenced by the great Clifford Brown. In the 1980s he played in the New Phil Woods Quintet, which played at the Porgy en Bess club, Jacq Scheelde, one of the senior volunteers in the club, remembered. I love Clifford’s style of playing, his sound, the way he articulates, his ideas and his warmth, Tom told Toon Kessels in an interview in 1994. During the concert the Jazz Orchestra played several compositions by Tom Harrell, like Times Mirror and Shapes, but also standards like Harold Arlen's Come Rain Or Come Shine with solos by trumpet players Ruud Breuls and Tom Harrell and double bass player Frans Van Geest. After the break the band played some more great composition and arrangements by Tom Harrell, like A Portrait of Jenny, Moon Alley ( with a great solo by Martijn Van Iterson) and Latifa ( with Simon Rigter on tenor saxophone). Tom impressed with the Charlie Parker composition Chasin' The Bird, which he arranged for big band and his composition Humility. Henk Meutgeert finished the concert with a reprise of Blues For A Date, the title tune of the Edison Award winning album with Rodolfo Neves, Jan Van Duikeren and Ruud Breuls as soloists together with Tom Harrell. The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw was founded as the New Concert Big Band which plays each month at The Bimhuis in Amsterdam and its latest album featuring Peter Beets, Blues For The Date, belongs to the five best Large Ensemble Albums of 2010 ( source: All About Jazz). We willen van Porgy en Bess een soort Bimhuis in de regio maken, Henk suggested, dus volgend jaar komen we terug ..... ( = so you will hear us again next year). De eerste zondag van april? .... (= What about the first Sunday in April? ....) Hans Zuiderbaan, host of Porgy en Bess suggested in advance, maar dan moeten we nog flink sparen ..... ( = but then we have to save our money ... ). And pointing to the framed photos of previous visitors in the rich tradition of the club, Henk suggested: .. en volgende keer hangen wij er ook bij ( = and next we time we will be one of them ...)! Tom Harrell belongs to the top of the jazz trumpet players in the world and the audience in the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen could state that last weekend. When Tom starts to play his trumpet, he becomes a new person. The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, directed by Henk Meutgeert, accompanied the star on the trumpet, who played with icons like Stan Kenton, Horace Silver, Phil Woods and Woody Herman at an artistic and professional high level. Henk Meutgeert suggested to rename the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club "The Bimhuis along the Scheldt", refering to the Amsterdam Bimhuis where the orchestra has its monthly concerts. He suggested to return next year - same date - same place: Well I'll be in the audience ......

Afgelopen weekend, zondagmiddag 3 april 2011, in een goed gevuld Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen, ging het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw meteen bij het openingsnummer al uit zijn dak. Heb je't opgenomen, Kees? vroeg leider Henk Meutgeert aan geluidsman Kees Harreman, We hebben 't namelijk nog nooit zo goed gespeeld. Dan maken we meteen een plaat The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw Live in Porgy en Bess, fantaseerde Henk er goedgemutst op door.

We waren hier drie keer eerder, herinnerde Henk Meutgeert zich, al vanaf het allereerste begin leider van het orkest. Toen moesten we nog met de boot hierheen komen, dat gaat nu een stuk makkelijker met de tunnel. In januari 2000 en november 2001, herinner ik me, trad het Jazz Orchestra op met musici als Benjamin Herman, Jesse van Ruller en, ( in 2000 ) met baritonsaxofonist Jan Menu, die hier kind aan huis is; In 2007 begeleidde de band Greetje Kauffeld tijdens een optreden in het Scheldetheater vanwege de festiviteiten rond het 50-jarig bestaan van de club.

De bezetting van het het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw leest als een who-is-who van de Nederlandse jazzscene met: Jorg Kaaij, Marco Kegel, Simon Rigter, Sjoerd Dijkhuizen en Juan Martinez in de saxsectie; Ruud Breuls, Jan van Duikeren, Rodolfo Neve, Jelle Schouten en Rini Swinkels op trompet; Bert Boeren, Andy Bruce, Martien de Kam en Jan Oosting op trombone; Martijn van Iterson op gitaar, Peter Beets aan de vleugel en Frans Van Geest en Marcel Serierse in de ritmesectie. Meteen al bij het eerste nummer, de Simon Rigter compositie Two Brothers, liet het orkest horen er zin in te hebben om op deze bijzondere plek te spelen. Het openingsnummer bevatte solo's van Peter Beets, die liet horen niet bang te zijn om ook stride-piano-elementen in zijn solo te verstoppen, en de rietsectie met zowel Simon Rigter als Sjoerd Dijkhuizen als de "Two Brothers" (volgens Henk). Het lijkt wel paaldansen, suggereerde Henk, doelend aan het gebrek aan ruimte op het podium, zodat Sjoerd Dijkhuizen nog al eens plaats moest maken voor de andere rietblazers als ze naar de solomicrofoon wilden. Speciale gast tijdens dit concert was de Amerikaanse trompettist Tom Harrell - één van de beste trompettisten ter wereld. Ondanks zijn handicap, Tom lijdt aan een ernstige vorm van schizofrenie, waardoor hij genoodzaakt is zware medicijnen te gebruiken, werd geboren in Urbana Illinois. Hij begon met trompet spelen toen hij acht jaar oud was en studeerde af aan de Stanford Universiteit op het onderdeel Compositie. Hij kon na zijn slagen meteen aan de bak bij het grote orkest van Stan Kenton en in de jaren zeventig speelde hij bij Woody Herman en Horace Silver.

In de jaren tachtig speelde hij in the New Phil Woods Quintet, waarmee hij o.a. in Porgy en Bess speelde. Hij was toen nog een hier onbekende trompettist, vertelde Jacq Scheelde me, die hem nog goed herinnerde. Als hij de trompet vastpakte en aan zijn mond zette, leken al zijn handicaps te verdwijnen. Hij speelt heel melodieus en zijn trompetspel is geïnspireerd door de grote trompettist Clifford Brown. Ik hou van Clifford’s stijl, van zijn sound, zijn articulatie, zijn ideeën en zijn warmte, vertelde hij aan Ton Kessels in een interview ( bron: Muziek als houvast aan de werkelijkheid - Toon Kessels ( Jazz Nu) (september 1994)). Tijdens het concert werden er verschillende composities van Tom uitgevoerd, zoals Times Mirror en Shapes, maar ook standards als Harold Arlen's Come Rain or Come Shine met solo's door de trompettisten Ruud Breuls en Tom Harrell en bassist Frans van Geest. Na de pauze kwamen er meer schitterende arrangementen van Tom op de muziekstandaards, zoals A Portrait of Jenny, Moon Alley ( met een mooie solo van Martijn van Iterson) en Latifa ( met Simon Rigter op tenor). Tom maakte indruk met de Charlie Parker compositie Chasin' The Bird, dat hij bewerkte voor big band en zijn compositie Humility. Henk Meutgeert sloot het concert af met een welgemeende hug voor Tom namens het publiek en het orkest en een toegift voor het publiek van zijn Edison winnende album met Rodolfo Neves, Jan van Duikeren en Ruud Breuls als solisten, samen met Tom Harrell in het gelijknamige nummer geschreven door Peter Beets en gearrangeerd door Henk Meutgeert: Blues For The Date. Het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw werd opgericht als de Nieuwe Concert Big Band, en speelt elke maand in het Bimhuis in Amsterdam en hun laatste album, samen met Peter Beets samengesteld, Blues For The Date, behoort volgens het toonaangevende All About Jazz tot the Best Large Ensemble Albums of 2010. We willen van Porgy en Bess een soort Bimhuis in de regio maken, legt Henk uit, een soort Bimhuis-aan-de-Schelde. Volgend jaar komen we terug ..... . De eerste zondag van april? .... probeert Hans Zuiderbaan alvast spijkers met koppen te slaan, maar dan moeten we nog flink sparen. Wijzend op de fotogalerie met de afbeeldingen van de grote jazzhelden die hier in het roemruchte verleden van Porgy en Bess optraden ( al meer dan 50 jaar), roept Henk enthousiast uit .. en volgende keer hangen wij er ook bij! Het aanwezige publiek ging met een tevreden gevoel naar huis - het massieve geluid van het orkest nog licht nasuizend in de oren - de meesten zullen volgend jaar zeer zeker weer van de partij zijn om deze enthousiaste groep musici te beluisteren. Eén reservering is er al, Maja ................

Her album Come Escape With Me reached the Top 10 of the JazzWeek Airplay chart for 10 weeks and her latest album Sketches even reached the top 5 range of that list. Almost unknown in Holland en Belgium she performs all over the world with her band. On Sunday afternoon the 20th of February, 2011 she played with her sextet at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen ( southwest part of The Netherlands); so ... that leaves not much to be desired....... ?

Her sextet features the Luxembourgish trumpet player Ernie Hammes, who also played the flugelhorn; Marc Mommaas, a Dutch tenor saxophonist, now living in New York, Bart Platteau on flutes; Jeroen Vierdag on double bass and Chris Strik on drums. Amina Figarova, born in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, studied classical music and became a concert pianist. She visited The Netherlands for some concerts and took up residence in Amsterdam ten years ago.

She became fascinated by jazz music, thanks to the Dutch Jazz piano player Rob Van Kreeveld. She tours all around the world with her band, which features, since it started, her husband Bart Platteau and drummer Chris "Buckshot" Strik, as her regular accompanists. Up to now she released more then half a dozen jazz recordings and wrote the music for the 2001 Joop Van Den Ende musical: Diana, de musical.

We zijn altijd op pad ( = We're always on tour), she started the concert in almost perfect Dutch, en we hebben onze ervaringen vastgelegd in een aantal sketches, nummers ( = and we have recorded our experiences in a number of sketches, compositions). In the liner notes of her latest album Sketches she describes it as: Travelling with our musical family brings us to most interesting, and impressive places, we meet wonderful people, and find ourselves in different situations. We have lots of fun, we love touring, and we love to share those experiences.

During the first set they performed tunes like Four Steps to ....., Your Room and a composition Caribou Crossing, inspired at a trip to Canada. The tune Ernie's Song, like all songs composed by Amina herself, with a great solo by Ernie Hammens on his beautiful designed David Monette flugelhorn, was originally released on her one but last album Above The Clouds. The first set was finished with the tune Flight Nº, which gave Chris "Buckshot" Strik, who got his nickname Buckshot from trumpet player Dmitri Matheny, the opportunity to show that he is a very energetic drummer. Chris, as he told me, can't remember why he is nicknamed that way Ik heb eerlijk gezegd geen idee. Is open voor interpetatie denk ik. ( = I have no idea - place your one interpration on it ....). But, if you have heard Chris beating the drums .......... Inquire with Dmitri, Chris, I'd suggest!

After the break Amina started with the tune WHOTSOT, a contraction from the sentence: What Happens On Tour Stays On Tour. But if you really would like to hear some of those stories, come to me after a the concert and maybe I will tell you some, Amina suggests in the liner note of Sketches, but no bedtime stories she added to it during the concert.

The tune Breakfast for the Elephant was composed during a trip to South Africa, where she was inspired by its wildlife wich included die kleine diertjes ( = those small animals), as she labeled them. The tune that impressed most was Back in New Orleans, which contained a great duet by Jeroen Vierdag on double bass and Marc Mommaas on tenor saxophone. We zijn er verschillende keren geweest, maar de stad, voorheen bruisend, was nu, na Katrina, leeg en verlaten. ( = We have visited New Orleans several times, but after Katrina, the city, once a city with a bustling nightlife, was now empty and deserted.). Amina joined with her band the well known New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. One of the final tunes was On The Road, with another great solo by Buckshot Strik; The tune Train to Rotterdam, the city where Amira lives now, was offered as an encore.

The tunes played during this concert, can be found on Amina's latest record Sketches, and, although the album don't has the long piano intro's, so typically for most of the tunes played by Amina during the concert, this album is a must-have for everybody in the audience. It was one of the last opportunities to see her live in these regions, as Amina and Bart have decided to move to New York City for a year within a few days. We hebben voor een jaar een appartement gehuurd in New York ( = We have rented an apartment in New York for a year), her husband Bart Platteau told me. De container wordt morgen gepakt ( = The container will be loaded tomorrow). But first the band will leave for Mexico for a one week tour with concerts in Cuernavaca and Mexico City and in April Amina can be heard in several US venues and festivals. Don't miss it!

Amina Figarova is one of those jazz musicians, who are rather unknown in the region where they live, but famous elsewhere in the world. In the Porgy en Bess jazz club in Terneuzen in the south west part of The Netherlands, she showed that this is undeserved - she played her compositions, inspired by stories of her tours all over the world, from South Africa up to Canada. This year they move to the States to play in clubs and festivals all around the country, so ..... if you're there - don't miss it. Haar album Come Escape With Me prijkte tien weken lang op de Top 10 van de Jazzweek Jazz-radiolijst en haar laatste plaat Sketches bereikte onlangs de vierde plaats. In Nederland en België is ze nog niet zo bekend, al speelt ze op alle grote podia van de wereld. Op zondagmiddag 20 januari 2011 kon ze daaraan Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen aan toevoegen - wat blijft er dan nog te wensen over ..... ?

Haar sextet bestaat uit de Luxemburger Ernie Hammes op trompet en bugel; Marc Mommaas, een Nederlandse tenorsaxofonist, die nu in New York woont; Bart Platteau op fluiten; Jeroen Vierdag op bas en Chris Strik op slagwerk. Amina Figarova, geboren in Bakoe, de hoofdstad van Azerbeidzjan, studeerde klassiek piano en speelde als concertpianiste in Azerbeidzjan. Ze kwam naar Nederland om concerten te geven en bleef hier tien jaar geleden definitief plakken.

Ze raakte gefascineerd door de jazz dankzij de Nederlandse pianist Rob van Kreeveld, die haar introduceerde in het jazzwereldje. De laatste tien jaar speelde ze overal ter wereld met haar groep, waarvan Bart Platteau, met wie ze getrouwd is en Chris "Buckshot" Strik tot haar vast begeleiders behoren vanaf het eerste begin. Tot nu toe maakte ze al heel wat platen, waarvan een zestal jazzplaten. Ze schreef in 2001 de muziek voor de Joop van den Ende musical: Diana, de musical.

We zijn altijd op pad, vertelde ze in vlekkeloos Nederlands bij aanvang van het concert, en we hebben onze ervaringen vastgelegd in een aantal sketches, een aantal composities. In haar laatste album schrijft ze hierover: Travelling with our musical family brings us to most interesting, and impressive places, ( = Al rondreizend met onze muzikale familie komen we op interessante en fascinerende plaatsen). We meet wonderful people, and find ourselves in different situations. (= We ontmoeten allerlei soorten mensen en komen in allerlei situaties terecht). We have lots of fun, we love touring, and we love to share those experiences. (= We hebben altijd lol samen, we houden van reizen en we houden er van onze ervaringen met anderen te delen).

In de eerste set speelde het sextet nummers als Four Steps to ....., Your Room en het nummer Caribou Crossing, waarvoor de inspiratie in Canada lag.
Het nummer Ernie's Song, net als alle andere nummers gecomponeerd door Amina, maakte indruk door een mooie solo van Ernie Hammens op zijn schitterende, door David Monette ontworpen bugel. Dit nummer komt oorspronkelijk van het voorlaatste album Above The Clouds. De eerste set werd afgesloten met het nummer Flight Nº, waarin Chris "Buckshot" Strik alle ruimte kreeg om zijn energieke stijl van drummen te demonstreren. Zijn bijnaam heeft hij te danken aan trompettist Dmitri Matheny, die hem ooit zo noemde, al kan Chris zelf niet bedenken waarom hij die naam gekregen heeft, Ik heb eerlijk gezegd geen idee.
Is open voor interpetatie denk ik. Zijn felle solo's, vol dynamiek en mimiek, lijken de vergelijking met "een schot hagel" wel te staven. Toch nog maar eens navragen, Chris!

Na de pauze opent Amina met het nummer WHOTSOT, een samentrekking van het zinnetje: What Happens On Tour Stays On Tour, wat zoiets betekent als: Wat er onderweg gebeurt, blijft onder ons. But if you really would like to hear some of those stories, come to me after a the concert and maybe I will tell you some. ( = Maar als je een paar van die verhalen wil horen, kom dan na het concert maar eens naar me toe, dan vertel ik je er misschien een paar), suggereert Amina op haar album Sketches. Maar geen bedtime stories hoor, geen verhaaltjes voor het slapen gaan, waarschuwt ze op voorhand in Porgy en Bess.

Het nummer Breakfast for the Elephant werd gecomponeerd in Zuid-Afrika, waar ze geïnspireerd werd door die kleine diertjes, zoals de wilde olifanten liefkozend typeerde. Het nummer dat de meeste indruk maakte was Back in New Orleans, met daarin een indrukwekkende duet tussen Jeroen Vierdag op bas en Marc Mommaas op tenor. We zijn er verschillende keren geweest, maar de stad, voorheen bruisend, was, na Katrina leeg en verlaten. Amina trad er o.a. op tijdens het befaamde Jazz and Heritage Festival. Gelukkig gaat het de laatste tijd weer beter - de muziek komt weer terug. In één van de laatste nummers, On The Road, grijpt Buckshot Strik weer alle ruimte om te scoren ......... Als toegift speelde het sextet het nummer Train to Rotterdam, de stad waar Amina de laatste jaren woonde.

De nummers, die het sextet ten gehore bracht, waren bijna alle van haar laatste album, Sketches. Het album bevat niet de vaak breed uitgesponnen intro's op piano, die Amina tijdens het concert speelde, maar desalniettemin is deze cd een must voor iedereen die aanwezig was tijdens het concert in Porgy en Bess en de muziek als herinnering mee naar huis wil nemen.

Het was overigens één van de laatste kansen om hen in deze regio te zien optreden, want Amina en Bart verhuizen binnenkort voor een jaar naar de VS. We hebben voor een jaar een appartement gehuurd in New York, vertelde Bart Platteau: De container wordt morgen gepakt. Eerst gaan het sextet overigens nog naar Midden Amerika voor een serie concerten in Cuernavaca en Mexico City en ook in april staan er optredens gepland in verschillende Amerikaanse clubs en festivals. Een mooi concert!

Amina Figarova is zo'n jazzmuzikant, die buiten haar eigen land meer bekendheid geniet dan thuis. Tijdens een concert in Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen liet ze zien en horen dat dit onterecht is - met haar sextet speelde ze nummers, die alle ontstaan zijn tijdens hun vele tournees, van Zuid-Afrika tot Canada: We zijn altijd op reis, vertelde ze. Het komend jaar gaan Amina en haar man proberen om Amerika te veroveren - iets waar ze al een tijdje mee bezig zijn, te zien aan de hoge plaatsen op de jazzlijsten die hun laatste twee album behalen.
