'During the '70s, in the Bronx, New York, Mary Lou Records [owned by Ismael Maisonave] developed what is today one of the hottest labels of mostly unknown gems under the umbrella of Salsa International [a division of Mary Lou]. After Maisonave's retirement and passing, the label went into hibernation until the European impresario Ian Morrison met New Yorker Milton Ulloa and revived classic gems that many of us failed to purchase when they were in cut-out bins for $1.99, back in the '80s.'

'Peregoyo y su Combo are among Colombia's most influential & fondly remembered bands. Formed in the PACIFIC coastal town of Buenaventura in the mid 60s under the leadership of Prof. Enrique Urbano Tenario, the band shared a vision to create a modern electric sound out of the local musiques of Colombia. This album, recorded in 1972 at the height of their success, is the band's ultimate testament. Local rhythms such as the cumbia, curralo & porro as well as Cuban & Puerto Rican flavoured cuts are given the Peregoyo treatment. A rich powerful, horn led sound underpinned by rock-steady bass & percussion with impassioned vocals & riffing horns laced with jazz tinged solos. 'This is a reissue of an early-'70s release by a band alas long defunct. The style is your basic salsa-cumbia (salsa-currulao, salsa-porro, etc.). But Peregoyo's group stood out for a splendid mix of originality and down-home tipico, plus an improvised solo trumpet lead to the frontline that gave the whole thing far more flair than the usual arranged horns.
