The U.S. Department of Education has named Grant Gates, a North Kansas City High School senior, as one of its candidates for the Presidential Scholars Program. Gates is one of 3,000 candidates chosen from the nearly 3.2 million students expected to graduate this year.
According to a U.S. Department of Education media release, candidates are selected “on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character, and involvement in community and school activities” and for exceptional performance on the SAT or ACT test.
