It was founded in 1899 by English lace-maker Herbert Kilpin and businessman Alfred Edwards among others. The club has spent most of its history in Serie A, the top-flight of Italian football, having played only two seasons in Serie B in the early 1980s.
Together with Boca Juniors, the club is the most successful in the world in terms of international competitions won, with a record of 14 European trophies and four World titles. Milan has earned the right to place a star on its club shirt in recognition of the fact that the club has won at least ten scudetti.
