 Many still consider this match be the finest performance by the finest vintage of Liverpool teams throughout the club’s history, Just before Liverpool clinched the First Division title in 1988, Liverpool hit five without reply and Brian Clough’s team knew they had been let off lightly. Just four days earlier Liverpool had beaten Forest 2-1 in the semi-final of the FA Cup at Hillsborough, and just a few weeks later Forest would finish third in the First Division. In front of almost 40,000 at Anfield, Aldridge scored twice while Gary Gillespie, Peter Beardsley and Ray Houghton also found the net…. The legendary Sir Tom Finney said of the game:  “It was the finest exhibition I’ve seen the whole time I’ve played and watched the game. You couldn’t see it bettered anywhere, not even in Brazil.” Ten days later Liverpool clinched their 17th Championship and their 9th in 14 seasons!

Liverpool dominated the match from start to finish, and took the lead in the eighteenth minute. Alan Hansen won the ball in his own half, and played a through-ball to Ray Houghton, who ran diagonally towards the opposition penalty area. He played a one-two with John Barnes, before beating Des Walker and lifting the ball over goalkeeper Steve Sutton under pressure from close range. The second goal also began in Liverpool's half - Peter Beardsley received the ball, and in one motion played in a long-distance pass in front of John Aldridge, who was between two defenders. Aldridge ran onto the pass, and clipped it over the advancing 'keeper from the edge of the area. In the second half, Liverpool made it 3–0, an unmarked Gary Gillespie smashing a John Aldridge  cross into the roof of the net from inside the penalty area in the 58th minute. The fourth goal came in the 79th minute. The move started on the left wing, Barnes beat two defenders before approaching the penalty area, and cutting the ball back to an advancing Beardsley, who hit a low drive into the bottom right-hand corner. Liverpool rounded off the scoring in the 88th minute - a long ball from Bruce Grobbelaar was cleared by Steve Chettle, but Nigel Spackman  won the ball back as Forest tried to move forward. He continued running into the area and received the ball back from Beardsley, before cutting the ball across for Aldridge to score his second from close range.
John Motson, who was commentating on the game, described it as "almost fantasy football". Liverpool's performance was described by former England international Tom Finney as "the finest exhibition of attacking football ever seen"., while former European Footballer of the Year Michel Platini said Liverpool resembled "a continental team, not an English one". In his 1999 autobiography, John Barnes said it was "the best Liverpool performance he ever played in.

 En Novembre 1986, Alex Ferguson, devenu depuis peu manager de Manchester United, avait déclaré : « Je veux faire tomber Liverpool de son putain de perchoir, et vous pouvez imprimer cela. » Les Reds trónaient alors sur le Royaume, et allaient bientòt glaner, avec Kenny Dalglish aux commandes. leur dix-huitième titre de champion (en 1990). Ferguson partait de loin (MU comptait alors sept Championnats a son palmarès), mais il n'a pas perdu de temps. Vingt-cinq ans plus tard, la prédiction qui est devenue réalité. Que Manchester United ait remporté cette année son dix-neuvième Championnat d'Angleterre, devenant le club anglais le plus titré, ne peut aujourd'hui ètre considéré
comme une surprise. La Premier League ne lui a échappé que six fois en dix-huit ans depuis 1993, domination sans précédent dans l'histoire du pays. Mais c'est aussi, au regard du scenario de cette saison, une sorte de miracle. « La plus grande force de MU aura été les faiblesses de ses rivaux», a conclu un confrère anglais, dont le verdict pourrait ètre défendu devant n'importe quel tribunal.

  Après huit journées, les Mancuniens pointaient en quatrième position, a cinq longueurs du leader Chelsea, alors archifavori. Quand Wayne Rooney apparaissait dans les pages football des quotidiens britanniques, c'était pour évoquer un probable départ, et se demander si le joueur, incapable de marquer dans le jeu (il dut attendre le l*'rjanvier pour cela), la téte a l'envers en raison de problèmes conjugaux étalés dans tous les torchons, redeviendrait jamais celui qu'il avait été quelques mois plus tòt. MU tenait, du bout des ongles, accumulant des matches nuls sans gioire - quatre de suite lors de ses quatre premiers déplacements -, ne retrouvant jamais le rythme des années précédentes. A la mi-novembre, les Blues menaient encore de trois points, avec Arsenal dans leur sillage. Le titre? Une vue de l'esprit. MU s'accrochait, parce que s'accrocher est inserii dans son ADN. Mais Tottenham paya cash ses exploits en Ligue des champions ; Manchester City demeura un chantier ; Chelsea, mine par des crìses internes, sombra a l'approche de Noèl. Et Arsenal, a qui les perches furent tendues sans que tes Gunners sachcnt les saisir, s'effondra après sa défaite cn finale de la Coupé de la League. Et c'e.st ainsi que Manchester United devint champion par défaut. Les défauts de ses challengers.
 

Cette interprétation, validée par beaucoup d'observateurs outre-Manche, occulte cependant un autre facteur : la capacité d'un club et, surtout, de son entraìneur, a se réinventer en permanence. Ce que MU est encore parvenu a accomplir en dépit des obstacles placés sur son chemin, des cascades de blessures, en défense en particulier. Les ingrediente n'ont pratiquement pas changé, mais les plats que sert Ferguson ont un autre aspect, une autre saveur. Et tant pis s'ils ne sont pas aussi relevés qu'avant, du temps où Carlos Tevez et Cristiano Ronaldo composaient avec Wayne Rooney un irrésistible trio. La venie de Ronaldo au Real Madrid en 2009 avait été percue comme l'aveu d'un manque d'ambition, un déclin qui sembla se confirmer lorsque MU échoua dans sa tentative de devenir le premier club anglais a conserver son titre quatte saìsons d'affilée l'an passe. Mais qui sera a Wembley, le 28 mai prochain, en finale de CI? Une fois de plus, sir Alex avait vu plus juste, plus loin. Il savaìt compter sur des fondations qu'il ne cesse de reconstruire, avec prudence. Le noyau dur demeure toujours en piace. La question est de savoir pour combien de temps. La moyenne d'àge du MU qui battit Chelsea le 8 mai dernier était de vingt-huit ans et un mois, la plus élevée des six équipes que Ferguson a menées au titre lors de ce siècle. Si MU vieillit mieux que bien, MU vieillit tout de méme, ce dont il a conscience. N'avait-il pas dit, des l'été 2008, qu'il ne recruterait plus de joueurs aussi àgés que Dimitar Berbatov, qui n'avait pourtant alors que vingt-sept ans? Il a tenu parole depuis, en achetant des joueurs comme Fabio et Rafael, les jumeaux brésiliens, Chris Smalling et Chicharito, qui approchaient ou avaient tout juste dépassé la vingtaine. 

 Les cibles qu'on lui prète pour cet été (Jack Rodwell, Ashley Young, Gareth Baie, David De Gea) ont un profil similaire. Cette strategie - payante, au regard de la progression parfois fulgurante des jeunes joueurs qui sont arrivés a Carrington depuis 2007, date de l'acquisition d'adolescents nommés Nani et Anderson -n'était pas seulement liée a l'impact du regime Glazer sur la capacité du club a peser sur le marche des transferts, mais aussi au constai que la fameuse académie de United n'apportait presque plus de sang neuf a l'equipe première depuis trop longtemps. On attend toujours les successeurs de la « génération dorée » du début des années 1990, dont Ryan Giggs, trente-sept ans, et Paul Scholes, trente-six ans, sont les ultimes représentants après l'adieu de Gary Neville en cours de saison. Sans faire offense a John O'Shea, qui passera bientòt le cap de la trentaine, seul Darren Fletcher, vingt-sept ans, mérite d'étre cité dans cette prestigieuse lignee. Evans plafonne, Cleverley a été envoyé s'endurcir a Wigan et Welbeck, prète a Sunderland, a de fortes chances d'y demeurer. Ce n'est donc pas un hasard si Ferguson fait son marche ailleurs, comme lorsqu'il avait été chercher un ado nommé Wayne Rooney a Everton en 2004. Ses tauliers ne dureront pas éternellement. Edwin van der Sar jouera son dernier match a Wembley, contre Barcelone. Des doutes perdurent sur la capacité de Rio Ferdinand, l'homme qui fait de Nemanja Vidic, trente ans, un des meilleurs défenseurs centraux d'Europe, a récupérer des blessures a répétition qui ont encore tronqué sa saison. Mème Giggs (32l> trophée: record mondial !)n'est pas immortel. Park est entré dans sa quatrième décennie, Carrick l'imiterà bientòt. Et la question demeure, depuis des années: combien de temps sir Alex (70 ans a la fin de l'année) pourra-t-il tirer sur la corde ?

Genial Joe Mercer and his radical coach, Malcolm Allison, were two of television's first soccer pundits as the profile of the manager grew in the 60s. Their Manchester City team came out of the Second Division to win the Championship within two years.  
One of the exuberant performances produced by their star-studded forward line came against Spurs on a frozen pitch. Francis Lee, Colin Bell, Mike Summerbee, Neil Young and Tony Coleman made light of the conditions to perform a football ballet on ice.

After Jimmy Greaves had put Spurs ahead, City tiptoed through the Tottenham defence time and again. Bell,Summerbee, Coleman and Young scored in that order, but such was their mastery of the conditions there could have been many more goals. Such a winter's scene could only have happened before City installed their superb under-soil heating, which was later laid 9 inches under the surface. But even on better pitches, it is arguable whether Maine Road fans have ever seen a better exhibition. It gave City a platform for only their second Championship, which they clinched at Newcastle on the last day of the season, while United abdicated the throne in front of the cameras by losing to Sunderland.
