Scudetto game

 Because of the Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, the season’s start was delayed until October 1, 2000. At the start of the campaign the favorites were the usual suspects: Ancelotti’s Juventus, Lippi’s Inter, Zaccheroni’s Milan, Capello’s Roma, Eriksson’s Lazio, and the possible outsiders being Malesani’s Parma and Fiorentina. At the start of the campaign Roma were ahead after the 3rd giornata but they were overtaken the following week by the two surprises of the season: Udinese and Atalanta. The Friulani were alone at the top until the 6th giornata when they were overtaken by Capello’s Roma who were alone at the top on November 12. 

The Giallorossi, with Francesco Totti playing like a world class superstar and Gabriel Batistuta scoring crucial goals started to keep up impressive streak of form that looked as if nobody could keep up with. On December 22nd at the Stadio Olimpico the big match with Juventus finished 0-0 and allowed Roma to go +6 over the second place Bianconeri at the winter break. Capello’s side continues their impressive form after the break, becoming winter champions on February 5th with a 6 point lead over Juventus and rivals Lazio, who after a disappointing start were starting to pick up steam and join the race.

Roma continued to chug along and get positive results, maintaining a safe distance from their two rivals. On April 1st, with Roma now +9 on Juventus and +12 on Lazio, many thought the season was finished, but the following Sunday the Giallorossi lost to Fiorentina and the day before Easter failed at home vs. Perugia, allowing Juve and Lazio to catch up. On May 6th in Torino the big match between Juventus and Roma was held with 6 points dividing the two sides: after Juventus going ahead 2-0 in the first half, Roma had the strength to come back and tie the match, scoring the 2 decisive goals in the last 10 minutes of the game. Much of the responsibility was placed of Juve goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar, who was out of position on the first goal, and failed to hold the second one. On the third to last day, May 27th, Roma found themselves 4 points ahead of Juventus and could mathematically win the Scudetto the following Sunday in Napoli. Napoli however were fighting to avoid relegation and drew the Giallorossi at the San Paolo leaving it all in Roma’s hands on the last day. On June 17, 2001, Roma hosted Parma at the Olimpico while Juventus hosted Atalanta in Torino. Roma had to win to take the Scudetto, while Juventus needed Parma to defeat Roma and win vs. Atalanta. The Giallorossi didn’t fail, defeating Parma 3-1 (goals from Totti, Montella and Batistuta) and celebrating a historic title victory in a total madness.... (http://italy.theoffside.com)

Napoli pourrait être le grand bénéficiaire de la journée en cas de victoire. Les Napolitains ont bien entendu toujours la première place en tête, mais ils pourraient quasiment assurer une place dans les quatre premiers en battant la Lazio  qu’ils relégueraient à huit points à sept journées du terme du championnat. Les laziales visent toujours une place en Champions League qu’ils ont longtemps occupé cette saison.

Si Milan a écarté le danger intériste, il lui reste à se méfier de Naples. Les Napolitains, invaincus depuis 3 matches, sont en grande forme et entendent jouer le coup à fond. Ils en ont les moyens et surtout l’audace avec leur duo Lavezzi-Cavani. Ils devront toutefois se méfier d’un adversaire qu’ils n’ont pas battu lors des 4 dernières confrontations. D’ailleurs, le jeu défensif des Laziales avait clairement posé des soucis aux attaquants napolitains puisqu’ils n’avaient marqué qu’une seule fois dans la même période face aux Romains. Le souci actuel de la Lazio repose sur son incapacité à l’emporter à l’extérieur. En 9 déplacements, ils ne l’ont emporté qu’une seule fois.

Aurelio De Laurentiis, le président de Naples, avait promis un « orgasmo » aux supporters de son équipe pour le match de cet après-midi dominical contre la Lazio. Le pensait-il vraiment ou était-ce simplement une façon de faire un peu de la pub pour un match programmé à un horaire (12h30) toujours aussi contesté ? Toujours est-il, ses dires se sont vérifiés, et beaucoup plus qu’on pouvait l'imaginer. Le Naples - Lazio de cette 31e levée de la Serie A  était un match à en perdre son latin, celui qu’on ne se lassera pas de voir et revoir, et qui bénéficiera d’une place de choix dans les annales du football italien.
Tous les ingrédients d’un match haletant et bouleversant étaient réunis pour ce duel, à savoir des buts, un scénario renversant, un public en folie, un suspense insoutenable et même une grosse erreur d’arbitrage. En effet, le referee a commis une énorme faute d’appréciation à la 67e minute du jeu en ne validant pas un but du Laziale Rocchi (66e), pensant que le ballon n’avait pas franchi la ligne. Sur le coup, les Biaconcelesti ont su s’en remettre, mais au coup de sifflet final, cette injustice a pesé très lourd. Cela étant, elle n’enlève rien à la grosse performance réussie par l’équipe locale, qui a justifié amplement son rang au classement de cette Serie A (3e).

Assurément perturbés par la chaleur, les Partenopei étaient en grosse difficulté pendant une heure de jeu. Et le retard de deux buts, signés Mauri (29e) et Dias (57e), qu’ils accusaient alors était parfaitement justifié. Mais, la bande à Mazzari a su puiser profondément dans ses ressources, aussi bien physiques que mentales, pour aller chercher un mémorable succès. Le public de San Paolo, qui avait parfaitement répondu à l’appel du président, plongea alors dans une véritable extase. Une extase comme il n’en a plus connue depuis l’époque bénie de Diego Maradona.
S’il était devant son écran, l’ex star argentine a dû, lui aussi, savourer, mais aussi et surtout constater qu’il ne pouvait rêver d’un meilleur successeur du côté de Naples. Il s’agit, bien sûr, de l’infatiguable Edinson Uruguayen. Meilleur buteur de la Serie A, l’international uruguayen a encore frappé, à trois reprises qui plus est, jouant ainsi un rôle primordial dans le renversement de situation. Son coéquipier Andrea Dossena (60e) s’était chargé de réveiller l’équipe, avant qu’il ne se charge donc de faire le reste du travail (62e, 82e s.p., 88e). Entre temps, la Lazio avait réussi à la 68e à reprendre l’avantage, mais la joie des Romains n’a pas duré face à ce Naples en état de grâce.
