Cup Winners Cup 1995 1996 Paris SG Celtic Glasgow Both Legs

Secound Round
First and Second Leg
October & November 1995

First Leg

A Glasgow».

Second Leg
2 Novembre 1995
Park Head, Glasgow

"Another afternoon of British rubbish." (Disenchanted voice in Wembley Press Box)

Whatever pleasure Scotland goal from winnig a dreadful matc was spoil by by the hordes of their puerile, drunken fans who invaded the Wembley pitch at the end to celebrate by breaking both sets of goal-posts, ripping out the nets, and cutting out pieces of turf to take home as trophies of their triumph.
At least the Scots had the consolation of retaining the Home Championship, but England will have gained nothing from this hard, ill-tempered, disagreeable match of low technical and tactical quality oilier than a severe dent in their morale prior lo their upcoming tour of South America. Scotland gate a competent, spirited performance, and achieved a merited 2-1 victory thanks largely lo McClrain's polished defensive and attacking football, the midfield industry of Hartford, Masson's precise placing of the dead ball, Ihe persistence of Dalglish and Macari, and the commanding presence of McQueen. England lost chiefly because they were overwhelmed in midfield, even before the departure of the injured Brian Greenhoff.
Scotland look control in tin 42nd minute when Mc Queen headed home Masson's free kick. Despite the loss of Jordan immediately afterwards, tey remained on top, and Dalglish popped in No2 in Ihe 63rd minute. Three minutes from the end, Channon scored England's belated goal from a penalty after Francis was brought down. Then came the invasion.

The 1977 British Home Championship exemplified a new era in Home Nations football during its final game, when jubilant Scottish fans invaded the pitch at Wembley Stadium following their team's surprise victory. Unlike a similar occasion in the 1967 British Home Championship, family football had given way to hooliganism and extensive damage was done to the stadium and riots in London  throughout the night followed the occasion. It was events like this which eventually led to the tournament's cancellation in 1984.

The tournament itself was an open affair, with an opening victory for England cancelled out by a Scottish win over Northern Ireland and English defeat to Wales. The Welsh stood a good chance of winning the tournament outright for the first time since 1937, but could not beat the Irish in their final match, and ended up in a rare second place position. The Scots and English thus faced each other in the final match knowing the winner would take the trophy, the Scots achieving a victory on England's home ground to take the trophy for the second year in a row and demonstrate their dominance in British football. The match was followed by a mass pitch invasion by Scottish supporters.

Scottish Cup 1984 1985 Celtic Glasgow Dundee United

"The Century Final"
Hampden Park, Glasgow
18 May 1985
Attendance: 60,346
Referee: Brian McGinlay

Dundee United:
McAlpine, Malpas, Beedie (Holt), Gough, Hegarty, Narey, Bannon, Milne, Kirkwood, Sturrock, Dodds
Substitute: Coyne
Dundee United scorer: Beedie (54)
Celtic:
Bonner, W McStay, McGrain, Aitken, McAdam, MacLeod, Provan, P McStay (O’Leary), Johnston, Burns (McClair), McGarvey
Celtic scorers: Provan (76), McGarvey (84)

The 1985 Scottish Cup Final was played on 18 May 1985 at Hampden Park in Glasgow and was the final of the 100th season of the Scottish Cup. The previous winners were Aberdeen, who had beaten Celtic in the 1984 final, but they were knocked out by Dundee United at the Semi-final stage. The Final was contested by Celtic and Dundee United. Celtic won the match 2–1, thanks to goals from Davie Provan and Frank McGarvey.

Davie Provan: The Scottish Cup Final against Dundee United in 1985 was special because it was the Centenary Final and also because of the manner in which we won it.
It also stands out for me because I scored probably my most important goal. It is as well as I ever struck a freekick.
We used a different ball for that match from the one we used for league games and it flew about all over the place. I had actually been practising my free-kicks with Murdo MacLeod and I must have missed the target with every kick. So we agreed, if the opportunity arose, he would take the kicks.
But, with time running out and at 1-0 down we were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the penalty box and I fancied it.
Archie Macpherson was commentating on television, and said: "Only twice in the history of the Scottish Cup have goals been scored direct from free-kicks. I wonder if this will be another." I was happy to oblige my friend.
Once I had scored the equaliser, I felt there was only going to be one winner. And, right enough, Frank McGarvey got in a wonderful diving header to seal the win.

Frank McGarvey: I had two dreams as a boy. One was to score the winning goal for Celtic in the last minute of an Old Firm game. I did that in my first appearance.
I realised the second dream when I scored the winning goal in the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden in 1985.
It was the 100th cup final and we were trailing 1-0 to Dundee United going into the final minutes.
But Davie Provan netted a superb free-kick to equalise.
And then I contributed probably the best goal I scored in my entire life. Roy Aitken had gone up the right wing and put in a terrible cross away from goal to make my life difficult.
But I ran past David Narey and jumped as high as I could in the air. The ball just seemed to come straight to me and I managed to make good contact with it.
I fell to the ground and did not see the ball go into the net. I just heard a tremendous noise and I realised I had scored
.
I am not a particularly religious man, but I did thank God after that for letting me score because I had managed to make so many people happy.
There must have been about 50,000 of our supporters in the ground that day and they were loving every minute of our victory.
Afterwards, Davie said to me: "Enjoy this, Frank, because we won't get many more moments like it."
Those proved to be prophetic words as we both took ill the following season, resulting in my release.
David Hay took over as manager when Billy McNeill left, and I always feel I was unfairly treated by him.
Although I played well for him, he wanted his own players.
I was 29 and wanted to spend the rest of my days at Celtic, but he sold me on, even though the cup final goal made his job a lot safer. (Celticwiki)
