Summer School Update

Today (April 23) is the enrollment deadline for the 2010 Summer XLT program. Plans for North Kansas City Schools’ summer learning opportunities continue to move forward, but the number and types of classes we will be able to offer are tied to state aid allocations and potential legislative restrictions.

The Missouri General Assembly is advancing a bill that would reduce state funding for summer school as well as limit its use to core curriculum subjects such as math, communication arts, science and social studies. May 7 is the deadline for legislators to submit funding bills to the Governor, and the legislative session ends May 14. As such, a final determination on funding and legislative parameters may not be known until mid-May.

We apologize for the uncertainty, but want to assure you that North Kansas City Schools will provide summer learning programs for students with an identified academic need, and will expand class offerings as finances allow. Please note that schools are contacting the families of students with an identified academic need.

District officials also are studying the option of offering certain non-core curriculum and enrichment classes on a fee basis. We will communicate with all families through a district-wide telephone message (Web Messenger Phone Alert) as soon as we have a clear understanding of our fiscal resources and program options.
