Premier League 2010 2011 Newcastle Manchester United on MiamiGunners Match Of The Week

barclays premier league 2010/11
week 33
19th april 2011:
newcastle united v. manchester united

Newcastle have fared dismally against Manchester United in recent times and will want to address that issue on Tuesday night. The Magpies head into a midweek meeting with the table-topping Red Devils in the knowledge that they have won none and lost 13 of the last 16 top-flight fixtures between the two clubs. With their last success coming way back in September 2001, the North East outfit will feel that they are due a reversal in fortune. Unfortunately for the Magpies, they have been unable to contain United both at home and on the road. They have taken just one point from the last 21 available from games with the Red Devils at St James' Park. Worryingly for Alan Pardew, he has also seen his side keep just two clean sheets in their last 15 games in front of their own supporters this season.

United will arrive on Tyneside looking to take full advantage of that leaky defence, allowing them to take another step closer to the title. Sir Alex Ferguson's side boast a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League table with only six games of the season remaining. A positive result on Tuesday will see them close on that particular crown, while providing the best possible response to Saturday's disappointing FA Cup semi-final defeat to arch-rivals Manchester City. They certainly have the firepower to worry the Magpies, with Wayne Rooney having notched nine times in his 11 appearances for United against Newcastle and Dimitar Berbatov having found the target in his previous two.

midweek: epl and copa del rey final, plus misc. stuff...

Division One 1984 1985 Queens Park Rangers Newcastle United

Saturday 22 September 1984
Loftus Road, London
Attendance: 14,526

On September 22, 1984, a crowd of 14,234 turned up at Loftus Road to see Alan Mullery Frank Sibley's QPR take on Jack Charlton's Newcastle.

QPR had begin by winning two and drawing two (including at Liverpool)...Then the previous week had lost to Clive Allen's Spurs 5-0...And then came the Newcastle game and QPR's incredible comeback from 0-4 at half-time. A hattrick for Newcastle's Chris Waddle. Among QPR scorers, subsequent manager, John Gregory! (And on the Newcastle team, ex-QPR and later Newcastle manager, Glen Roeder)

With a 4-0 half-time lead and Chris Waddle in inspirational form, you could have forgiven Newcastle for thinking they had QPR beaten at Loftus Road in 1984. But this titanic Division One match took a huge twist when Rangers responded to manager Alan Mullery's furious half-time team-talk with a stirring comeback. Gary Bannister, John Gregory and an own goal dragged the home side back into it only for Kenny Wharton to restore Newcastle's two-goal lead with six minutes left. But Rangers were still not done as Steve Wicks and Gary Micklewhite grabbed a share of the points with two last-gasp strikes. (Nobok Sports)

QPR: Hucker, Neill, Dawes, Fereday, Wicks, Fenwick, Micklewhite, Fillery (Stewart 46), Bannister, Stainrod, Gregory.
Newcastle United: Carr, Brown, Saunders, Haddock, Anderson, Roeder, McDonald, Wharton., Waddle, Beardsley, McCreery.

Premier League 2010 2011 Stoke City Newcastle on MiamiGunners Match Of The Week

barclays premier league 2010/11 week 30

19th march 2011:

stoke city v. newcastle united

Tony Pulis' side qualified for the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time in almost 40 years with a 2-1 victory at home over West Ham last Sunday. The latest win was a continuation of the good home form in the league this year - Stoke have earned 10 points from a possible 12 at the Britannia in 2011. However, their recent away form has been poor, with Pulis' side having only taken one point from their last four league games to drop to 12th in the table.

Pulis will be demanding a maximum effort here to get back on track in the league and secure their top-flight status for a third successive season.
But it will be tough against a Newcastle side who have the better league form going into this clash - six points from their last six games.
While Alan Pardew's side sit in 10th - two points above the Potters - the Magpies need to bounce back after suffering a 2-1 home defeat to Everton last time in a game they had been leading. However, they will take heart from their last two trips on the road - a goalless stalemate at Blackburn followed by the excellent 2-0 victory over Birmingham.

Premier League 2010 2011 Birmingham Newcastle on MiamiGunners Match Of The Week

barclays premier league 2010/11
week 18 (rescheduled)
15th february 2011:

birmingham city v. newcastle united

Birmingham will look to use their game in hand against the teams below them to pull away from the relegation zone and edge closer to safety. Alex McLeish's men are currently in 14th position with 30 points but could climb above Newcastle into the top half of the table with a win on Tuesday night.

Newcastle travel to St Andrew's for this rearrange fixture hoping they can end their recent goal drought away from St James' Park. The Magpies have failed to score in their last two away games, drawing 0-0 at Blackburn and losing 1-0 at Fulham either side of the incredible 4-4 draw with Arsenal at home.

Premier League 2010 2011 Blackburn Newcastle on MiamiGunners Match Of The Week

barclays premier league 2010/11

week 27
12th february 2011:

blackburn rovers v. newcastle united

The return of star striker Roque Santa Cruz has given manager Steve Kean a much needed boost after the Paraguayan missed last weekend's 4-3 loss to Wigan Athletic. The Manchester City loanee could be joined by new signings Ruben Rochina and Mauro Fornica in the matchday squad. Midfielders Keith Andrews and Steven Nzonzi are pushing for starting spots after completing comebacks from long-term injuries.
The Magpies' striker crisis has been eased after Leon Best's hamstring strain in the 4-4 draw with Arsenal has not proved to be too serious. The Republic of Ireland international has been joined by shock signing Shefki Kuqi who is available after his free transfer move. The Finland international will help plug the gap left by Shola Ameobi after he broke a cheekbone. Midfielders Dan Gosling and Stephen Ireland remain out of contention after knee injuries. Winger Hatem Ben Arfa also joins the pair on the sidelines after a broken leg, but could return before the end of the month.

Premier League 2010 2011 Newcastle Arsenal

5th Febuary 2011
St James' Park, Newcastle
Attendance: 51,561
Referee: P. Dowd

Newcastle host Arsenal at St James' Park in the Premier League on Saturday hoping to repeat their fine victory over the Gunners earlier in the season. Under former boss Chris Hughton the Magpies earned a 1-0 win in North London back in November, when Andy Carroll's header silenced the Emirates. But following Carroll's dramatic deadline-day switch to Liverpool, the Toon will now have to rely on other sources for inspiration against a side in fine form. Arsenal overcame Everton 2-1 in midweek and kept the ball rolling despite Cesc Fabregas allegedly confronting the officials at half-time to vent his anger following Louis Saha's blatantly offside opener.
