'This is a wonderful lost album of grooves from France and it's got a sound that's unlike anything else we've ever heard. The group is a smooth funky jazz group with lots of electric bass and Fender Rhodes, similar to some of the Italian groups of the 70s [like The Cabildos], but they've also got a female singer in the mix, and she sings these groovy jazz vocals that have an airy breezy quality, similar to some of the best Brazilian fusion from the same time. The result is a stunning electric groove with a feeling that's really fresh, nice and warm, and funky in all the right parts. The original album's rare as hen's teeth and this reissue is very nicely done! ~ dusty

by request. seems the previous post was corrupted on a few tracks so if you grabbed it, you might wanna try this copy instead. come to find out the beatmakers for infamous prison guard Rick Ross, sampled 'chanson d'un jour d'hiver' so inventively on this track, my ears almost vomited feces! anyhow 320 remerciements à l'uploader d'origine

Fred Hersch plays Jobim

Fred Hersch plays Jobim ( English) Fred Hersch speelt Jobim ( Nederlands)

Jobim's bittersweet harmonies, fabulous melodies and superb craftsmanship are evident in everything he writes.
FRED HERSCH PLAYS JOBIM
Hans Koert

Fred Hersch is one of those jazz piano players who fascinate me. Although he plays and records since the early 1980s I learned about him and his music only a few years ago, thanks to the documentary Let Yourself Goes - The lives of Fred Hersch - a fascinating portrait of a gifted musician in his fight agains his HIV-infection.
Last year I heard him in a concert with his Fred Hersch Trio + 2 at the North Sea Jazz Festival, in Rotterdam. For this performance Fred had invited two horn players, Ralph Alessi on trumpet and flugelhorn and Tony Malaby on tenor saxophone. The photos used in this contribution are made, with a simple digital camera, during this concert.

Last year Fred released a solo album dedicated to Antonio Carlos Jobim. But few people won't have ever heard the music of Jobim. His bossa nova styled songs like the Girl from Ipanema, Desafinado or Meditation, to list some well known themes, are well known and where all part of the pop charts of the 1960s. The bossa nova, a mix of Brazilian music and jazz, to keep it simply, was introduced by musicians like Astrud Gilberto, Charlie Byrd, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Stan Getz. I told about this period in a contribution about Eliane Elias' tribute to 50 years Bossa Nova

Cover of the album: Fred Hersch plays Jobim

In the liner notes Fred tells that he was introduced to the Bossa Nova by a local guitar player Kenny Poole. This men died a few years ago and I found a fragment where you can here him playing.

He learned to play the Brazilian rhythms by drummer Edison Machado. He was one of the first to transfer the rhythms of the Bossa Nova, the Samba, and the Baiao to the drum set. He met Edison at a gig at the New York club Cachaca: I was lucky to be taught on the bandstand by a real master: Edison Machado. During Fred's career he visited Brasil three times and played with Leny Andrade, the great Brazilian singer who often played with the Sergo Mendes band Sexteto Bossa Rio. In Brazil Fred Hersch learned more about Choro. I am a huge fan of chorinhos - the equivalent of Brazilian ragtime - and have learned many of them and written some of my own.

Fred Hersch at the North Sea Jazz Festival - Rotterdam ( July 2009) ( photo courtesy: Hans Koert)

Around 1870 in Rio de Janeiro ( Brazil) a new musical style emerged that would become one of the most creative musical manifestations in Brazil. Choro was primarily an instrumental form, and to a North American ear it might sound a little like a small Dixieland jazz combo playing with strange rhythms, extreme melodic leaps, unexpected modulations, and occasional breakneck tempos. Interestingly, choro's development in Brazil slightly predated the rise of ragtime and jazz in North America. Choro and jazz were both characterized in part by their use of improvisation and African-derived musical elements. ( source: Choro: Improvisation South of New Orleans in The Billboard Book of Brazilian Music by Chris McGowan and Ricardo Pessanha p. 151 )

In the album Fred Hersch plays Jobim Fred didn't want to play only the well known tunes, already listed above, but also some of the lesser known Jobim compositions. One of those less known tunes is O Grande Amor, which he learned from Stan Getz, who recorded it several times ( like in Sweet Rain, March 1967). I played briefly with Stan Getz in the mid-1980s and it was from him that I learned O Grande Amor. It is now one of the tunes I like the best. It starts almost like a classical Debussy-etude before it developed into a more swinging rhythmical theme. Fred Hersch was allowed to make a choice from the hundreds of compositions archived in the Jobim estate. This album contains nine tracks - all tunes were composed by Jobim, but Fred's version is not a copy of the originals. He made a selection of lesser known tunes like Por Toda Minha Vida and Luiza and some more known themes like Meditacao, Insensatez and Desafinado. The latter surprises as it contains rhythms and harmonies you don't expect in this well known theme - Fred says that he was inspired by the Brazilian rhythms he had heard. His interpretation of the slow tunes are more like a meditation - almost introverted, like Bill Evans would have played it, but the more rhythmical up-tempo tunes like Desafinado and in Brigas Nunca Mais, one of the tunes that surprised me too, the rhythms and harmonies seem to be inspired by the Choro music. On this tune, Hersch is accompanied by percussionist Jamey Haddad. This album was recorded at Ambient Studio in Stamford CT and Hersch plays on a well tuned and great sounding Steinway piano. Love to share with you the tune Insensatez as played by Hersch on this album, dedicated to the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Reading through so much of his music reinforced my belief that Jobim is one of the great composers of the 20th century regardless of genre. His bittersweet harmonies, fabulous melodies and superb craftsmanship are evident in everything he writes. ( Fred Hersch in the liner notes of Fred Hersch plays Jobim)

As this album has some relations with Choro-music it is also published on the Choro-music blog

Fred Hersch, piano player, played with Art Farmer, Eddy Daniels, Phil Woods, Tommy Flanagan, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, Toots Thielemans and in the Mel Lewis Orchestra before he started to make his own records. Fred Hersch plays Jobim is one of his latest. He says to be inspired by the Choro-music he heard in Brazil and that makes this record a special one. Tamara Maria: Dutch Lady of Bossa Nova

Tamara Maria: Zwoele Zomerse Muziek ( Nederlands) Tamara Maria: Dutch Lady of Bossa Nova ( English)

Hot tropical sounds!
TAMARA MARIA: DUTCH LADY OF BOSSA NOVA
Hans Koert

As a kid she listened to Nat King Cole's music in her father's record collection and she loved to listen to the music of Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie. She became fascinated by the Bossa-Nova music when whe first heard the famous tune Desafinado played by João Gilberto and Stan Getz.

Tamara Maria released a few years ago her first album simple entitled Tamara Maria ( PRCD 200778 ) dedicated to the Brazilian musical legacy - an album which surprised me, not only because the pleasant warm and professional voice of Tamara Maria but also because of the arrangements and accompanists. It's her first album released under her own name, but she is to be heard on numerous previous albums by bands like Combo Moderna, La Luna Azura, Solo Moderna and Jazz Juice.

Tamara Maria's debut album.

As a kid Tamara Maria, her Christian names became her artist name, dreamed to become a dancer like her mother. Her first appearance was as a 4-years old child and later she became a solo-dancer at several dance ensembles. But in fact she loved to sing and of course she loved to share her fascination for the Brazilian music. After she finished the Conservatorium, she studied at the famous Centro Musical Adolfo in Rio de Janeiro.

Her first album contains, of course, standards like Bim Bom composed by João Gilberto, Jobim's Garota de Ipanema, better known as The Girl from Ipanema and the rather unknown tune Gingele composed and recorded by Astrud Gilberto in 1972. The tune, which made it all happen, Desafinado, is also to be found on her debut album, arranged by Maarten Van Der Grinten who plays the guitar. Maarten van der Grinten has accompanied more Dutch vocalists in the past like Greetje Kauffeld, Laura Fygi, Matilde Santing, Francien van Tuinen and Fay Claassen, but is also a sought after soloist in bands like Dig'n Diz; personally I like his duets with colleague Jesse Van Ruller.
Cor Bakker, known piano player to the general public, thanks to his performances in the prime time Dutch TV shows of show master Paul De Leeuw, met her in Rio de Janeiro five years ago and invited her in his TV-program “Cor Op Reis”. He accompanied her in four tracks, including a great duet with Tamara Maria, titled Comecar de Novo ( = a new beginning), dedicated to Louis (Wiet) Poetiray, a Dutch musician, active in the so-called Indo-Rock scene, who passed away in September 2007 during the preparations for the album. De Wiet has played an important role in her life and that's why she dedicated this reord to him ..... Next fragment gives a good idea how Tamara Maria sounds on this record. She sings Madalena, accompanied by Frans Van Keep. On the record Maarten van der Grinten plays the guitar. Enjoy these tropical sounds

The Bossa Nova became popular in the 1960s thanks to musicians like João and Astrud Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim. In fact the Bossa Nova, a mix of Brazilian music and jazz, was first created with the tune Chega de Saudade ( also known by its English title No More Blues), recorded by Elizete Moreira Cardoso, the famous Brazilian singer and actress, discovered in the 1930s by Jacob do Bandolim, icon of Choro music. I wrote about that in a contribution about Eliane Elias, who dedicated a few years ago an album to the Bossa Nova and its 50th birthday.
Tamara Maria

A lot of people like this style of music, especially to relax, but Tamara Maria didn't make a traditional album copying the great standards from the 1960s, but invited young jazz musicians who gave some tunes a rather modern groovy base, with funky bass lines and rhythm patterns. On several tracks, like Jobim's Fotografia and Garota de Ipanema, Madalena, Pela Praia ( a Tamara Maria composition) and A Rã, she is accompanied by Alain Eskinasi, who made the arrangements and used electronic percussion instruments and bass synthesizer. I was fascinated to hear these 1960s Bossa Novas in new arrangements - I'm sure these tracks make it to a must have for a lot of (young) people, who won't be identified and labelled as "jazz-fans". On one tracks, a double tune, Detour to Soho, written by Maarten Van Der Grinten and Samba do Soho, Tamara Maria is joined by the Dutch leading "crooner" Wouter Hamel - one of the most popular young jazz vocalists in the Netherlands now a days. She told me that she has plans to sing Choro in the period to come: a great idea for a new album I hope! I'm convinced that this debut album by Tamara Maria will please a lot of serious music lovers - an album that should be in your record collection.

The record Tamara Maria is to obtain at her website.

Tamara Maria, whose roots are in Indonesia, Holland, the Molucca Islands and Portugal, released a great debut album dedicated to the Brazilian music - the Bossa Nova, born 50 years ago as a mix of Brazilian music and jazz elements. She didn't copy the old standards, but gave it her own modern fresh rhythmic groove .... The Keep Swinging blog loves to inform you about that. Don't miss it.

Tamara Maria: Zwoele Zomerse Muziek

Tamara Maria: Zwoele Zomerse Muziek ( Nederlands) Tamara Maria: Dutch Lady of Bossa Nova ( English)

Topklasse van Nederlandse bodem!
TAMARA MARIA: ZWOELE ZOMERSE MUZIEK Hans Koert

Tamara Maria's debuut album.

Even genieten van heerlijke Zoete Zomerse Muziek .........

1250 keer KEEP SWINGING BLOG

Eliane Elias: Tribute to 50 Years Bossa Nova

A (rather extensive) Eliane Elias Discography - Hans Koert

Bossa Nova Stories
ELIANE ELIAS: Tribute to 50 Years of Bossa Nova
Hans Koert

Today I love to point you to a great new album by the US - Brazilian piano player and vocalist, the
always charming Eliane Elias. The album is titled Bossa Nova Stories and her latest one in a series of almost two dozens of great releases. At the bottom of this blog you'll find a list of records made by Eliane Elias during the past twenty-five years.

This album wants to be a tribute to the Bossa Nova - the music style born in 1958 with the tune Chega de Saudade ( also known by its English title No More Blues), recorded by Elizete Moreira Cardoso, the famous Brazilian singer and actress discovered in the 1930s by
Jacob do Bandolim. Bossa Nova means in Portuguese, in fact, "new trends". In 1958 she was invited to sing on an album titled Canção do Amor Demais, with Bossa Nova compositions made by Vinícius De Moraes and Antonio Carlos Jobim, with João Gilberto at the guitar. It is a fact that the tune Chega de Saudade ( No More Blues) was already recorded for Victor by the Kentucky Jazz Babies ( 1929) and a few years later by Eddie South, but, okay, both Jobim as De Moraes gave it that Bossa Nova groove, a mixture of the Brazilian ( Samba) and the US (Jazz) music cultures. This style of music became extremely popular for a dozen years and then it was passed by new hypes; the Bossa Nova tunes, however, became standards in the jazz repertoire.
Eliane Elias was born in Sao Paolo (Brasil) around that same period (Yes she is !!) and grew up in a musical family with her mother being a classical piano player. Her mother loved to play the jazz- and Brazilian music too. When Eliane was a young girl she was already fascinated by the jazz and she admired especially the music of Bill Evans. She learned to play the piano and worked with big bands before she moved to New York in the early 1980s, where she maried Randy Brecker ( their daughter Amanda recently made her debute album Here I Am) and recorded for his band Steps Ahead. Up to now she made a lot of recordings and I heard her singing for the very first time on the soundtrack of the film Calle 54. On that great film, a tribute to the Latin American music, she sings Samba Triste ( a Baden Powell composition) with her trio, featuring Marc Johnson and Satoshi Takeishi. Love to share with you a fragment from that film Calle 54, featuring Eliane Elias singing Samba Triste.

Eliane Eelias at the North Sea Jazz Festival - Rotterdam (July 2008) (photo courtesy Hans Koert)
I heard her for the very first time live at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam last year; by accident, only a quarter of an hour I guess, to be honest, because her performance overrunned its time and I was in time to hear the great Ron Carter in concert. In those 15 minutes I learned what a great vocalist and piano player she is. At the Bol.com stand on the central square of Ahoy in Rotterdam she gave an interview that I love to share with you.

She tells about her fascinating for the music of Bill Evans. Her latest album titled Something For You and her concert in Rotterdam were dedicated to him. Her husband, she divorced Randy Brecker, Marc Johnson, bass player in her stage trio, was the last bass player in the Bill Evans Trio before he passed away September 1980. Thanks to a tape that Marc received from Bill Evans they decided to make a tribute to this great piano player, who, as I wrote at the beginning of this blog, was her first introduction to jazz. In August she will be, for a whole week, one of the guests at the Bill Evans 80th Birthday Tribute in the Iridium in New York City.
She also tells about her new project, a tribute to the Bossa Nova. This great record has been released some months ago and contains 14 well known Bossa Nova tunes, traditionals like Jobim's The Girl From Ipanema, Chega de Saudade of course and Desafinado and tunes like Marvelous For Words, The More I See You and Day By Day that have become standards in jazz. A special one is Superwoman, a Stevie Wonder composition with our own Toots Thielemans on his Muziekske, his harmonica. The tunes, no suprise, are all well known - some with a large orchestra, using strings, rather common for this kind of music and a quartet featuring Oscar Castro-Neves on the guitar, Marc Johnson on bass and Paulo Braga on drums.
I found a fragment of a concert, recorded some years ago, at the San Javier jazz festival in Spain with Eliane Elias at the piano, Gustavo Saiari on guitar, Marc Johnson on bass and Satoshi Takeisha on drums. Eliane Elias had released the album The Dreamer, dedicated to the music of A.C. Jobim. The tunes are Ipanema and Doralice.

This lovely vocalist has fascinated me with her latest recording and made me anxious to hear more of her, like the Bill Evans tribute Something For You. Love to finish with a short interview with Eliane on the Bloomberg channel. Hope you like it

I grew up in Sao Paulo in the 1960s, hearing the Bossa Nova which was all around us. It was the popular music of our day, with its infectious rhythm and poetic lyrics. It was romantic, cool, jazzy, sensious. I lived and reather this music. It's in my DNA. (Eliane Elias)

Eliane Elias: Eerbetoon aan 50 jaar Bossa Nova

Eliane Elias: Eerbetoon aan 50 jaar Bossa Nova (Nederlands) Eliane Elias: Tribute to 50 years Bossa Nova (English)

Een (tamelijk uitgebreide) Eliane Elias Discografie - Hans Koert

Bossa Nova Stories
ELIANE ELIAS: Eerbetoon aan 50 jaar Bossa Nova
Hans Koert

Jobim, zoals The Girl From Ipanema, Desafinado en Chega de Saudade natuurlijk, maar ook klassiekers als Too Marvelous For words, The More I See You en Day By Day; nu alle standards, die elke jazzmuzikant op zijn repertoire moet hebben.

I grew up in Sao Paulo in the 1960s, hearing the bossa nova which was all around us.(= Ik groeide op in Sao Paulo in de jaren zestig en overal klonk de Bossa Nova.) It was the popular music of our day, with its infectious rhythm and poetic lyrics. I lived and breather this music. It's in my DNA.(= Het zit in mijn genen)
