Some people tell great stories. Others live them. Rudy Reyes, a 1990 graduate of North Kansas City High School, is living proof that individuals have the power to reset their own life’s compass when they triumph over great odds. He shared his story with New Mark Middle School students Friday, Nov. 13.
His book, “Hero Living”, shares his personal story starting with metal leg braces and corrective shoes at age two, his discovery of martial arts and fitness strengthening, his experience being shuffled among relatives in his youth, and later, his move to the Omaha Home for Boys at age 13. Reyes emancipated himself at age 17, taking custody of his two younger brothers. He moved back to Kansas City, rented an apartment, and graduated from high school. With his brothers, he became impassioned about Kung Fu and martial arts training at the YMCA and went on to win championship titles.
