Words and Music

"Frankly my dear Scarlet, I don't give a damn".

Iconic words spoken by famed actor Clark Gable in the epic movie Gone with the Wind. Who could forget that famous line or any other colorful phrases uttered throughout the movie punctuated by a sweeping, playful sometimes overly dramatic music score.

Let us not forget the pivotal scene from Pride and Prejudice 2005 when the gorgeous, dangerously dashing Mr. Darcy (played by the divine Matthew MacFayden) stalks with determination through the mist to a stunned Elizabeth Bennett's (played by the equally divine Keira Knightly) delight?

When you write is there music playing or is it all quiet on the creative front?

I don't know about you but I love having a soundtrack to spur me on and put me in the collective creative mood. An orgasmic stimulation for the muses rolling around in your mind, a feast if you will for your senses that helps you set a certain tone and feeling to your work.

For example, need music for an epic battle scene? Think of your time period you are writing in and apply the music mood accordingly. For my battle scene which opens up my first WIP I was writing to traditional Military Bagpipe music.

Marches, pipes and drums, reels playing in ¾ time was the musical inspiration of the moment and made me feel as though I were fighting along with the Mackenzie lads.

I live by purchased downloads from iTunes and Amazon. If I need a quiet peaceful scene what better than Bercuese in D flat major played by Marc Andre Hamlin? Hardcore rough and ready? I might throw on Tupac I Don't Give a F* or Lil' Kim the Jump Off (for old skool style).

Basically anything from Metallica to the Go-Go's, The Pretenders to Fallout Boy, Lady Gaga to Train, Keith Urban to Led Zepplin, Thelonious Monk to Rachmaninoff. I could listen to anything if it will get the creative juices flowing.

Get your collective music on the next time you write and until then...
