 The main rival of West Brom is Wolverhampton and the main rival of Aston Villa is Birmingham City. Still, the West Brom vs. Aston Villa is a very heated match. Villa has the biggest ground in the region and it had it's succes in the past. For the other clubs in the Midlands this is reason enough to not be 'friends' with them. Aston Villar is also closer to West Brom than Birmingham City which adds to the rivalry.
Following a recent bout of injuries, things look a little more promising for Villa. Martin Laursen, Carlos Cuellar and Gareth Barry all hope to be fit for Saturday’s game. Gabriel Agbonlahor should return from illness, while Wilfred Bouma and John Carew are still injured. Not heard a thing about Luke Young so I assume he’s shaken off his knock.

Villa will probably start with Brad Friedel in goal and Nigel Reo-Coker (or Carlos Cuellar), Curtis Davies, Martin Laursen (or Zat Knight) and Luke Young right to left across the back. Ashley Young, Gareth Barry, Steve Sidwell, Stiliyan Petrov and James Milner in the midfield and Agbonlahor up top, with Milner and Young providing support.
Gianni Zuiverloon and James Morrison are injury doubts for West Brom. Tony Mowbray has stated that Filipe Teixeira and Abdoulaye Meite are a couple of weeks from fitness, while Craig Beattie will be available following his manager’s decision not to loan him out again this season. Ishmael Miller is out for the long term, and Neil Clement is not fit.

 Qui aurait dû remporter cette vingt-septième édition de- la Coupe des Clubs Champions? La question peut être posée mais personne vraiment ne peut y répondre objectivement. Si ce sont les Allemands qui ont eu le plus souvent la victoire au bout des chaussures grâce à quelques occasions de but très nettes, ce sont pourtant les « Villans » qui, par leur courage et leur grand désir de vaincre, ont permis à l'Angleterre de remporter son sixième titre consécutif de Championne d'Europe par club. 

Partant favori , le Bayern n'a pas, et de loin, réalisé la performance que l'on attendait de lui. Certes Breitner, incertain jusqu'au dernier moment, n'était pas en pleine possession de ses moyens, mais sauf en deux ou trois occasions, les Allemands n'ont rien montré de leur savoir-faire. En revanche, les Anglais avec toute la farouche rage de vaincre qu'on leur connaît ont su s'imposer en toute régularité. Soumettant leurs adversaires à un pressing pratiquement incessant, Mortimer et ses camarades ont tenté de développer un jeu cohérent qui contrastait fort avec les longues balles aériennes décochées par le Bayern. Sans vraiment se mettre en position de marquer, Aston Villa a enfin trouvé la brèche grâce à un beau travail de Morley ponctué par le plat du pied de Withe. Le challenger avait battu un géant aux pieds d'argile. Au lendemain de la victoire de l'Angleterre face à la Hollande, le succès d'Aston Villa est venu nous rappeler bien à propos que le football de nos voisins d'outre-Manche n'est pas mort. A méditer d'ici le 16 juin.

Pre Match : "On sait qu'en matière de football, l'Anglais méprise volontiers tout ce qui n'est pas issu de son propre patrimoine. Ainsi, l'Angleterre a boudé lors des trois premières éditions de 1930, 1934 et 1938, la Coupe du Monde « inventée » par le Français Henri Delaunay. C'est toujours avec la même circonspection que les clubs anglais virent se matérialiser en 1965 l'idée d'un autre Français, Gabriel Hanot, père de la Coupe d'Europe. C'est donc sur la pointe des pieds que nos voisins sortirent de leur splen-dide isolement, en laissant pendant la première décennie, la plus grande part du gâteau aux latins. C'était l'époque du Real de Madrid, de Benfica, de Milan. Mais lorsque les footballeurs de Sa Gracieuse Majesté décidèrent de s'intéresser de près à cette compétition internationale, ils le firent avec toute la pugnacité qu'on leur connaît, avec les résultats que l'on sait. Depuis 1965, pas une année ne s'est passée sans qu'il y ait au moins un club anglais en finale de l'une des trois Coupes.
On a bien cru que 1982 allait sonner la fin de cette remarquable série. Surtout après les matches aller des demi-finales qui avaient vu Tottenham laissant la plus grande partie de ses chances sur son stade de White Hart Lane, pendant que les grenats et bleus d'Aston Villa ne marquaient qu'un petit but au Royal d'Anderlecht. Tottenham baissait définitivement pavillon au Nou Camp de Barcelone, mais Aston Villa relevait le défi du Parc Astrid à Bruxelles. Le culot de la bande à Garry Shaw allait permettre aux Anglais de perpétuer leur présence au plus haut niveau des clubs européens. Et ce, dans la compétition reine des Coupes d'Europe, celle des Clubs Champions. Je ne veux en rien minimiser l'exploit de cette équipe anglaise qui, pour parvenir en finale, a dû éliminer deux supers Dynamos ceux de Berlin et de Kiev, mais force est de reconnaître que le 21 avril, entre Anderlecht et Aston Villa, c'est le moins mauvais qui s'est qualifié pour la finale de Rotterdam. Honte aux Belges, incapables d'aligner trois passes consécutives, honte à Ivic, l'entraîneur yougoslave aux conceptions incohérentes. Mais honte aussi aux supporters anglais, égaux à eux-mêmes dans la violence et la beuverie. Plus il y avait de policiers en cuir noir qui envahissaient la tribune située derrière les buts et plus il y avait de secouristes vêtus de blanc qui évacuaient les victimes du déferlement de chauvinisme. C'est ce que Ton appelle le principe des vases communicants. Et le football dans tout ça, me direz-vous? Seuls les Anglais eurent le mérite de tenter et de réussir quelques actions collectives. En prenant appui sur le pivot Withe, un avant-centre au jeu de tête et au jeu de corps typiquement britannique, Morley, Shaw et Cowans réussirent à inquiéter Munaron, seul joueur anderlechtois irréprochable. Ce n'est pas la dixième place qu'ils occupent actuellement en championnat d'Angleterre, qui aurait dû conférer complexe de supériorité et confiance aux coéquipiers du capitaine Mortimer. Mais pour les Anglais, un match de football, fût-il une finale de Coupe d'Europe, reste un combat que l'on dispute sans arrière-pensée. L'année dernière, les Villans de Birmingham ont damé le pion aux stars d'Ipswich et de Liverpool grâce à une homogénéité qu'avait su forger le manager Saunders limogé depuis. Mais nul doute que les Bavarois de Bayern Munich auront en tête la finale de 1975 où ils avaient rencontré et battu d'autres anglais : ceux de Leeds United. Ce jour-là, Gerd Muller et Beckenbauer étaient passés par un petit trou de serrure. "

Aston Villa will be looking to bounce back from their midweek defeat as they welcome in-form Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday. The Midlanders had won their last two before league leaders Manchester United inflicted a 3-1 reverse at Old Trafford on Tuesday. Gerard Houllier's side at least return to home comforts as they bid to register 500 Premier League goals at Villa Park.
Fulham's record of three wins at Villa in 19 attempts makes for poor reading, but Mark Hughes will be confident of improving that statistic in light of their recent resurgence. The Cottagers have amassed 10 points from their last six games, including Wednesday's 1-0 victory over Newcastle United. The victory has allowed Hughes to contemplate notions of a top-half finish and a positive result in the Midlands will go a long way to satisfying the Welshman's hopes.
