Oidupaa Vladimir Oiun is a legend & cultural institution in Tuva. In the late 1960's, he was seen as a threat by the occupying Russian forces & cast as a kind of Charlie Manson character for singing protest songs. Falsely convicted on trumped up charges of murder & the corruption of minors, he spent 33 years in the work camps where this album was recorded. Throat singing is by its very nature a sonic reflection or prayer in praise of the natural world & it's by virtue of his undying faith that Ouin retained his sanity during those dark years. These are moving, unconventional, self-styled throat psalms with wheezing accordian accompaniment. Still actively performing today, Ouin describes throat singing as the sound of the spirit & speaking of spirits, Divine Music made its initial appearance on the mighty ghostcapital earlier this year. 'The tromba possession ceremonies of the Betsimisaraka and Antandroy in the area of Tamatave on the east coast of Madagascar provide occasions for communication between the living and ancestral spirits.

Musique is crucial to these performances since powerful ancestral spirits will not appear unless attracted by masterful musical performances, and so music itself provides a complex symbolic system with which Malagasy can recall and reconstruct the past. The eleven tracks of this album are examples of the mastery of the musicians playing instruments such as the zither-like valiha, or maro tady as the Antandroy call it, the akordogna (accordion) or the rattle kaiamba. These instruments are vital components for the creation of the Maresaka sound aesthetic typified by a density of sonorities, rhythms, textures, and timbres. Maresaka is characteristic of these performances, which connect the living and the spirits of their ancestors.'

'Gus Viseur was a virtuoso in the musette genre, during the swing era in the 1930s. He is the only jazz accordionist who is a member of the famous Hot Club de France, conducted by Charles Delaunay. Viseur began his career playing in the streets of Paris & managed to get a great sound from a chromatic button accordion. It was clear that he was doing something innovative: He helped create the accordion-jazz style known as manouche. Meeting Django Reinhardt and performing with the legendary Quintet of the Hot Club of France was an important new chapter in his life. Later he even played bebop in the fifties. He was the first to draw a link between Musette and Jazz, but he never forgot Musette. That was his main voice. There is an unbelievable strength in his playing, that gives him the ability to improvise in all those different music genres. In addition to his numerous recordings he also performed in cabarets and nightclubs. He recorded his first record in 1937 and accompanied Édith Piaf in 1940.' 320 remerciements à espilos

Toni Iordache [December 17, 1942 – February 1988] was a Romani-Romanian lăutar and one of the most famous cimbalom [Romanian: ţambal] players in the world & was nicknamed the Paganini of the cimbalom.

Toni was born in the Bâldana village, near Bucharest, and began learning the instrument when he was four from his father. Some years later his family would move to Bucharest in the Herăstrău neighborhood, where many famous lăutari lived. There, Toni continued to learn from Mitică Ciuciu, who was a famous cimbalom player in his days.

At 12, he was employed at the National Radio Orchestra of Popular Music, through contest. Later, he would become a member of the Ciocârlia National Ensemble, the primary popular ensemble in the country. With the Ciocârlia Ensemble, Toni Iordache would tour the world: many European countries, the USA and also Asian countries. In between tours, he would play at weddings, being the most sought after lăutar of his days. Often, after landing at the airport he would drove directly to a wedding where the other musicians were waiting for him.

Among others, he played with Ion Petre Stoican, Romica Puceanu, Gabi Luncă, Ion Onoriu, Ionică Minune and also with the well-known pan flute (nai) player Gheorghe Zamfir.

Toni Iordache remained known among aficionados especially for his work as a lăutar. His solos were very complex, but also clear and beautiful and his improvisations were full of imagination. He was not only a very virtuoso player [he was measured in Paris to be able to play 25 notes per second], but also a very sophisticated one, with a high emphasis on touché, playing the slow pieces with great sensibility. He was able to play two melodic lines simultaneous at high tempos and knew how to use the full capacities of the cimbal. r.i.p. Toni Iordache 1942-1988

this cat is a relatively recent discovery for me & his muqâms are just pulsating with life. anyone know who the clarinet player in the video is? anyhu, this aint merely a buncha rapid-fire accordian solos, these are ensemble recordings. all his tunes are accompanied by either piano, clarinet, organ & naqara [that sweet drum resting on homeboy's knee in the clip]. i believe this is a best of compilation that came out in 2005 but i don't speak Azeri so if you do, kindly forgive my ignorance of your wonderful language & kulture. i am owlwaze making an effort to glean much more about everyone & musique remains the most mind expanding portal to broaden awareness. this recording was sitting up in cyberspace waiting for me to harvest it, lovingly shared by someone named raphael at a resonant 320k. respekt
