'Hot on the heels of Soundway Records consummate selection of Luk Thung, Jazz and Molam forms from Thailand comes this killer compo of similar, heavier styles from the Finders Keepers crew. The fuzz bleeds through the garage-rock, the xylophones twinkle inside the pop and the distortion bends the psych into bold, never-before-heard new shapes... Wild, unbridled exotica from another time and place to the one you are currently sitting in. Probably...

It's possibly a misnomer to label music recorded outside of the USA or Europe with terms such as `psyche' or `surf' as it is often just a stylistic innovation based on exposure to foreign records via the radio or music stores. It doesn't necessarily chime in with any of the social shifts or changes that accompanied the music's development in the West. Even in America, the concept of teen culture was relatively new during the height of these genres popularity. People who could afford to take advantage of these new freedoms often had the financial cushioning to do so. This factor was amplified in South East Asia, and the music shouldn't be considered nationally representative - it's a more scaled down phenomenon, relevant to a small cross-section of society.

By the same token, this wasn't just bland copycat music to widen a band's audience, or to entertain expat patrons in bars or clubs. This was a sincere desire to experiment and repackage local sounds without necessarily needing to make a statement. The musical information was processed and partially recast amidst a blend of local music and arrangements, transposed onto drums, electric bass, guitar and keyboards.

Although in the mid-70s there was a wider protest movement in Thailand that found it's musical outlet in the `songs for life' of Caravan and Carabao, the music collected here was not part of the same aesthetic, although it's possible there was some musical overspill.

The styles featured on this compilation fall somewhere between Luk Thung (`song of the countryside') and Luk Krung (`song of the city'). Bangkok was a particular melting pot for the evolution of these two genres, the former alluding to musical themes and lyrics aimed at the wider national population, the latter looking westwards with a more urban `sophisticated' audience in mind. The tracks here were experimentations or dice rolling by both little known groups, as well as established figures like Plearn Promdan. Some tracks might represent a specific artist's only foray into this musical area.

Even within Thailand the majority of these tunes remain unissued, so it's with great pleasure that we present this glimpse of the strange underbelly of Thai Luk Thung in all its unique, original and outlandish glory - a small snapshot of an otherwise forgotten era.' ~ press

==> perch merch <==

if ya dug the sroeng santi iron man 7" from last summer, this inspiring new collection from irrepressible, globetrotting 45 digger extraordinaire Chris Menist eclipses that release completely, as it features both of those fine tracks in addition to several more madcap burners. total life affirming fire, 320 rips later

Dom Thomas ~ Synthetic Soul & Other Junk [Brutal Music]

BRUTCD03

B-Music and Finders Keepers' linchpin Dom Thomas digs deep into his library of forgotten and unloved sound oddities to bring you a spaced-out tapestry of delights on the embryonic Brutal Music label.

A dazzling plethora of anti-world music, syphoned from the far corners of the earth and beyond, bringing together musical marauders that have no link, only the uncommon thread of constructing indefinable, sonic soundscapes which have somehow mutated into hybrid masterpieces, some by fluke, others by design.

After forging new ground with his previous sonic hotchpots 'Miscellaneous Mutant Mishaps' and 'The Exploding Disco Inevitable', Dom Thomas returns with another brain melting audio escapade into the ether. The third album in his dynamic anti-mixtape series on Brutal Music is salubriously entitled 'Synthetic Soul & Other Junk', giving Thomas free license to curate a mood that takes the unsuspecting listener on a cascading journey of edits and loops, blurring the lines of traditional DJ mixes and original compostion. 'Synthetic Soul' is composed of a variety of genres from 'International Disco Frankenstien' Thomas’ musical heritage, warping together vastly disparate records into a rich sonic tapestry. Repeated listening recommended with or without substances...

14. Jacky Chalard - Corto Maltese [Featuring Sylvia Fels]
15. Jacky Chalard - Corto Maltese [Instrumental]
16. Jacky Chalard - Super Man - Super Cool [LP Version]

'Once again delving deep into their archive of obscurities and long forgotten rediscoveries, Finders Keepers present this 1974 collaboration between French prog-pop star Jacky Chalard (and his group, Dynastie Crisis) with science fiction writer/voice actor, Gilbert Deflez. This album is like a psychedelic radio play, setting incredible French rock music backdrops against spoken passages. As tends to be the case with the best Finders Keepers releases, listening to Je Suis Vivant, Mais J'ai Peur is a transportive experience, taking you to a corner of the musical world you probably never knew even existed, and even if you don't understand the French well enough to keep up with what's going on, the band's soundtrack and the atmospheric sound designs that line the album give you ample cause to investigate this. Expect some great vintage pop songs and instrumental workouts nestled among the narrative pieces too - recommended.' ~ boomkat hype

'A pretty amazing surrealist French cosmic concept album from Jacky Chalard – with lots of spacey synth prog atmospherics and spoken French dialogue! This is a record in which Finders Keepers boasts similarities to both Melody Nelson and La Planete Sauvage, and truth be told, the music not only lives up to that lofty description – it's completely correct! Chalard and a group of French rock heavies featuring the members of Dynastie Crisis team up with Gilbert Deflez, a radio personality who read science fiction stories over the airwaves for a tripped out experience, and wholy credible prog funk rock set!' ~ dusty

snap up the re-ish

interesting [french] spoken word cosmic psych saga, kinda reminiscent of gainsbourg's 'l'homme a tete de chouin'. groovy despite the language barrier, mais si parlez vous français, this is likely a lotta fun. still if ya axe me, they coulda/shoulda faded gil's voice a lil lower the in mix & added a lot more echo. thanks to holly for the assist. our boy Feqwah of Fish Tail Lion fame just dropped the Acanthus re-ish to boot, so happy day :)

the other instantly sold out 10" from m. ashraf & nahid akhtar on finders keepers. i guess that about covers everything i have by madame akhtar, but naturally eyed love to ear more if ya got some :) please note these 2 soundtracks are different releases than 'the sound of wonder' compilation with very little overlap. the super-similar artwork does make it confusing & difficult to discern, i know. i suppose the elements i dig most about these tunes apart from the wonderful singing, is the tasty percussion & squelchy moog runs

21. Escucha Nina Top Show

'Finders Keepers return with another expertly sequenced compilation, this time taking a closer look at legendary Spanish imprint 'Belter' who have now been around for fifty years. Featuring rare tracks from the likes of Soledad Miranda [Vampyros Lesbos], Los Mismos and Fusioon, plus bizarre versions of tracks written by Curved Air, David Bowie, Quincy Jones, Wayne Fontana and Yamasuki, its another one of those precious releases that sounds like some kind of mixtape put together by someone with exquisite taste in killer, largely unknown music - which is more or less exactly what it is. Finders keepers excel at this sort of thing and seem to have made it their mission to bring to wider recognition record labels who have tirelessly brought the world unconventional, pioneering, quirky and little appreciated gems, united by a dislike of conformity of any kind. Belter Records, with their familiar yellow graphic bands and blue / silver or brown / yellow labels, punctuate racks of other Spanish delights in a country whose habitual record buying market was initiated and facilitated by a self-made home grown institution. This is were you'll find hip hop producers rubbing shoulders with mods and proggers, shying away from the sun, contemplating a supposedly authentic paella supper and repeatedly flipping over the endless rivers of 7" circles and squares in search of another 'Absolute Belter'. The Belter repertoire has touched each continent, proudly defiant in the face of fascism, technology, revolution, capitalism, patriotism, bad fashion, good vibrations and dubious humour, and now comes to you via another indispensable Finders Keepers selection - get investigating.' - boomkat hype

another fun comp from the weird beards at finders keepers. they sure make 'world musique' fun & definitely deserve our support, which is why i thoughtfully promote their fine prana-expenditure in this realm. this heavy trip was found just floating around in cyberspace like so many others. 320 death blows to the dome

another instantly out of print album from this stellar imprint & while i can't fathom paying premium import prices for any of their piece-meal collections, these sure are wicked fun for washed up olde dj's like meself. don't neglect to clique on the artist names in green if'n ya slept on any previous drops

VA ~ Disposable Music Library Subscription

a comp is a comp is a comp but this is a consistently solid effort from finders keepers' library musique offshoot, disposable music. a few of these traques live in previous posts on the tafo brothers & bruno spoerri respective full length releases [hint: finders keepers], but the remainder are new rown here & worthy of their very own post eyed say. incidentally the cover art was that same ole boring splatter paint mess so i took some hasty liberties there. zero learning curve for this kinda schtuff.

Soreng Santi ~ Iron Man 7" 45rpm

A1. Iron Man
B1. Dub Fai Kuigun

jaw dropping doppelganger Sabbath jam from Sukothai psych-rocker Soreng Santi. Iron Man meets Yama Yama on this original composition by a musical all-rounder who produced a string of Thai hard rockers until his freakish death in 1982. Backed with an equi-disfunctional slice of outsider punk-funk complete with bottles & bells breakdown on this tidy compacta 45.
