JEAN ROBERT - THE EUROPEAN HAWKINS
Hans Koert

One of the most important saxophone players of Belgium must have been Jean Robert. Although he played in numerous bands and recording sessions and with a more then 40 years career in music, he seems now complete forgotten by the younger generation. What a shame! The great American saxophone player
Coleman Hawkins, who played in this region for some years during the late 1930s, labelled Jean Robert as one of the best tenor saxophone improvisators in Europe, so ………. no doubts about that. Thanks to his grandchildren Michelle and Bas I can share with you some photos from Jean Robert’s own personal scrap books in some contributions. Some people on the photo’s were easily to identify; others not – that’s why we ask for your help identifying the musicians on the pictures. Today the second contribution about Jean Robert titled: Jean Robert: The European Hawkins. To be continued.

Coleman Hawkins Trio: f.l.t.r. Maurice Van Kleef, Coleman Hawkins and Freddy Johnson

As a member of the Freddy Johnson Trio Jean Robert performed at the Negro Palace in Amsterdam during the last quarter of 1938. This Freddy Johnson Trio contained Freddy Johnson at the piano, Jean Robert on the alto saxophone and Rally Wachtel on drums. At the end of a three month gig, the group made room for the Coleman Hawkins Trio featuring Freddy Johnson at the piano and Maurice Van Kleef, a Dutch musician, at the drums. Jean Robert played during this period as a substitute for Coleman Hawkins. When “Bean’( = Coleman Hawkins) had to perform in Paris or elsewhere, where he could make good money) , Robert took his place and became known as a great soloist; Coleman Hawkins labelled him once, as one of the best tenor saxophone improvisator in Europe. Gus Deloof ( photo courtesy Jean Robert archive)
In 1939 Jean Robert played with Eddie Oliver, who once played in the Ben Bernie Band as a pianist. During the 1930s Jean Robert had his own band at the Atlanta club and a quartet at the Cotton Club; both in Brussels, but he have to wait until Februariy 1940 for the first recordings under his own name. He made tworecords for Decca with Rudy Bruder at the piano and Buddy Heyninck at the drums. Jean Robert played, except his regular instruments, also the trumpet.
Jeff De Boeck ( photo courtesy Jean Robert archive)
In January 1940 Gus Deloof recorded two 78rpm records for Jazz Club, with a septet in which Jean Robert played the tenor saxophone, Gus Deloof trumpet, David Bee clarinet, Rudy Bruder piano, Andre Van Wijmersch guitar, Gene Kempf bass and Jeff De Boeck, an energetic percussionist, who loved to attract a lot of attention during concerts – too much, his critics said.

Jean Robert ( photo courtesy Jean Robert archive)

Four titles were recorded, like Gus’ own famous Sweepin’ the Floor, which he wrote in cooperation with Fud Candrix. Listen to another tune from this session, the evergreen: Whispering, in an arranged by Gus Deloof.

In 1938 Jean Omer founded a cabaret, dance hall, named Le Boeuf Sur Le Toit, where the Jean Omer Orchestra became the house band. Jean Robert was one of the members of that band. More about that period in the last contribution
.
One of the best record releases with a survey of Belgium jazz is the 2CD Jazz in little Belgium ( The collection Robert Pernet). It contains almost 50 tracks from the complete Belgian jazz history and an extensive illustrated and informative booklet. ( No English, sorry – only a French and a Flemish version exists). A must !!

According this contribution, it contains:

HOT TRIO JEAN ROBERT
Riffin' at the Arena - F225
Recorded in Brussel, 11th of March 1941
Jean Robert director, tenor sax, clarinet, trumpet - Rudy Bruder piano - Buddy Heyninck drums.

Love to thank Michelle and Bas for sharing photo's from their grandfather's archive - photo's which need some identification. Please contact us if you can identify musicians and bands.

Freddy Johnson or not? ... that's the question! ( photo courtesy Jean Robert archive)
De next photos are from Jean Robert’s scrap book and it would great if we could identify some of the musicians. I had to rack my brains over the first photo. The written words on the photo read something like: To my best pal from Taylor J…. or Johnson – As I don’t have the original photo, I’m not sure about it. The man on the photo seems to have eyes, cheeks and eyebrows like ( a ripe aged) Freddy Johnson, who passed away in New York City March 1961. But, I know this isn't correct - the wish is father to the thoughts. But who is this man? Any help welcome.

The CGD-orchestra. Jean Robert plays the bass sax. ( photo courtesy Jean Robert archive)
This band shouldn’t be too difficult to identify, as the letters on the bass drum reads: CGD It could be a band of Chas. Dolne, as I have a picture of Chas. Dolne Swingtet, with the musicians wearing the same jacquets and ties and the man–in-black looks like band leader and violin player Chas. Dolne, the Belgian Stephane Grapelly as he was labelled. He also played the guitar very well and made some special recordings with David Bee ( = Ernest Craps) on harp. It is remarkable that this band contained both a double bass and a sousaphone. The third man on the left is Jean Robert on the bass saxophone. Ate van Delden told me that Jean Robert met Adrian Rollini, the great expert on the huge bass sax, while playing at the Fred Elizalde orchestra in one of the Belgian coast clubs. Can someone help me identifying this band and its members?

The Happy Flanders Band ( photo courtesy Jean Robert archive)

Another band that can be named easily: The Happy Flanders Band, but who are the members? Jean Robert is on the right behind the baritone saxophone. Who’s the lady in the centre?
All help is welcome.
Thanks Ate for your commends.

McChrystal reportedly has prepared a separate request for tens of thousands of additional U.S. troops to be sent to the 68,000 already in Afghanistan.

...
Wednesday, September 30, 2009
By Susan Jones, Senior Editor
(CNSNews.com) – Another American died in Afghanistan on Wednesday, the final day of September--and exactly one month after the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan sent a confidential war assessment to the Obama administration, warning that more forces are needed--soon.
The as-yet-unnamed American serviceman who died on Wednesday was caught in a suicide attack in Khost Province, in eastern Afghanistan, press reports said. On August 30, Gen. Stanley McChrystal sent Defense Secretary Robert Gates a war assessment in which he said more U.S. troops--and a new U.S. strategy--are needed if the U.S. is to defeat the insurgents in Afghanistan.
Since that Aug. 30 date, a total of 43 soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines have died in a war that is now the subject of much discussion--and apparently some confusion--in Washington. Forty-two of those casualties have been identified by name in U.S. Defense Department press releases (see below), while the 43rd casualty, which occurred today, has been confirmed in press reports, but not by name.
In his confidential report, which was leaked to the Washington Post on Sept. 21, Gen. McChrystal warned that defeating the insurgents will not be possible if the United States fails to "gain the initiative and reverse insurgent momentum" over the next 12 months. McChrystal reportedly has prepared a separate request for tens of thousands of additional U.S. troops to be sent to the 68,000 already in Afghanistan.
Since Sept. 21, when the Washington Post leaked information from McChrystal’s confidential report, the White House has been on the defensive over its Afghanistan strategy. As CNSNews.com reported on Tuesday, Barack Obama campaigned on a promise to reinforce U.S. troops in Afghanistan, which he described as war we “have to win.”...

Virgin Prunes - A New Form Of Beauty 1

On this date in 1981, Virgin Prunes released their third 7-inch record. They called the record, A New Form Of Beauty 1. First, the contents. It was a seven inch single that included three tracks; "Sandpaper Lullaby", "Sleep" and "Fantasy Dreams". The "A New Form Of Beauty" series was designed to be a series of releases, numbered accordingly. An album, A New Form Of Beauty Parts 1-4, was released as a double album which included all three of the songs on the first part plus the other three parts of the series. Virgin Prunes was a Dublin, Ireland goth band whose members were childhood friends of Bono and The Edge from U2. In fact, their guitarist was Dik Evans, brother of U2's Dave "The Edge" Evans. They disbanded in 1986, sort of. When Gavin Friday left in 1986, the remainder of the band carried on as The Prunes for a few more years.

UK: Muslim Forced Marriages up 80%

...
...
"Forced marriages up 80% in the UK. And as authorities grapple with how to deal with it, they fail abysmally. How can they confront a problem they are afraid to name? I mean, really.
hat tip Rodney
The number of forced marriages being investigated in Britain has risen by 80 per cent this year with parents using "bounty hunters" and bogus missing persons campaigns in a desperate bid to track down runaway children and make them wed.
A special Government unit dedicated to stopping teenagers being married off by their families dealt with 300 cases in the first half of this year, up from 168 in the same period of 2007.
But the head of the Forced Marriage Unit, based at the Foreign Office, fears this could be just the tip of the iceberg as many victims are too scared to come forward and communities often close up to hide what is going on.
Wayne Ives also warned that heads of families are going to extreme lengths to get their children to marry, in some instances posing as officials to kidnap runaway brides or paying people to track them down.
His comments came as a new law comes into effect next week, which will make it easier for courts to stop ceremonies going ahead if it is feared that the bride and groom are being married against their wills.
A separate law will see the minimum age at which foreigners can come to Britain to get married being increased.
Despite the drive to tackle forced marriages, however, many feel it is still taboo because of fears of criticising immigrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh, who are involved in most cases.
Schools have refused to discuss so-called honour crimes in case they cause offence to ethnic minorities or religions, while MPs have been accused of failing to highlight forced marriage in case they lose Muslim votes.
Sick.
In a recent speech to a Capita conference, Mr Ives told delegates: "We are talking about endemic abuse of the worst kind against young men and women which is happening right here and right now."
He said the mere fact that a teenage girl is seen wearing a short skirt or having a boyfriend can be enough for her relatives to decide she has betrayed the family and must be forced to marry someone they deem acceptable, while others make disabled children get married so they can have a carer in a "warped form of altruism".
In total, 90 per cent of cases dealt with in Britain involve Bangladeshi or Pakistani families, but investigators are uncovering growing numbers of forced marriages involving Iranians, Turks, Kurds and Somalis.
Still can't say ............Islam.
Thanks to increased awareness, the Forced Marriage Unit has had 1,200 inquiries this year, 300 of which are being investigated as possible cases.
But Mr Ives warned: "What we've seen is the tip of the iceberg."
[...]
In addition, on Nov 27 the minimum age at which foreigners can come to Britain to get married will rise from 18 to 21 before a marriage visa can be granted.
Mr Ives went on to describe the lengths some families will go to in order to track down those who they want to be married.
"Two uncles managed to dress up as airport officials and tried to arrest a girl when she arrived in Pakistan.

Gamaliel at the White House

VIDEO of Gamaliel Pray to Obama and the Prophet Jeremiah Wright - 'Hear our cry. Hear our cry. Deliver us'
Obama has long been linked — through foundation grants, shared political activism, collaboration on legislation and tactics, and mutual praise and support — with the Chicago-based Gamaliel Foundation, one of the least known yet most influential national umbrella groups for church-based “community organizers.” (Stanley Kurtz)
Discover the Networks:
Predicated on the notion that America is a land rife with injustice, the Gamaliel Foundation (GF) trains activists in techniques and methodologies for effectively bringing about social change. The Foundation models itself on the principles of Saul Alinsky, who authored the books Reveille for Radicals (1946), The Professional Radical (1970), and Rules for Radicals (1971).GF takes a strong stand against current homeland security measures and immigration restrictions. In September of 2003, for example, GF's Director of Civil Rights for Immigrants described the Patriot Act as an "attack on immigrants." Moreover, GF seeks to persuade the U.S. government to "legalize and provide rights to tax-paying [illegal] immigrants in this country.” "We support any immigration legislation," adds GF, "that secures the civil rights of all immigrants; leads to the legalization of undocumented persons; provides for full labor protection and labor rights of immigrants; ends the inhumane detention and warehousing of asylum seekers; ends deportation for minor offenses; encourages family unity; provides security of our borders; includes humane border enforcement policies; [and] protects the civil liberties of all people."

Have you gotten any commitments from our European friends and anybody else?

It was a followup up to their debut, Greatest Hits Volume I and a precursor to their next album, Greatest Hits Volume III. Meanwhile... back in Montana...

Paul Joseph Watson
Tuesday, September 29, 2009
...
Following our earlier report about a paramilitary security force occupying a town in Montana, it has now become clear that the purpose of American Police Force is to boss a state of the art internment camp that some fear will be used to incarcerate American citizens, as reports come in of the private paramilitary unit setting up roadblocks and harassing citizens in Hardin.
A CNN report on the $27 million dollar facility in Hardin Montana states that it could become “Gitmo West” and be filled with detainees from Guantanamo Bay and other terrorists. Since a majority of the American people have now been designated as potential domestic terrorists by the federal government, fears are growing that the prison camp will be used to incarcerate citizens against their will during a flu pandemic or any other declared emergency.
The Two Rivers Detention Center is a state of the art facility, festooned with surveillance cameras and surrounded by razor wire and open land to prevent escape. The camp is also filled with riot equipment such as gas masks, riot helmets, shields and batons, as well as guns.
Since the camp is currently empty, a private paramilitary unit calling itself American Police Force has been hired by local authorities to boss the facility. However, as we reported earlier, APF, which has all the hallmarks of being another Blackwater, has virtually occupied the town, festooned their vehicles with police decals and started carrying out law enforcement duties.
According to an article carried on the Steve Quayle website, 75% of the APF agents will be foreign mercenaries after training is completed and the organization’s ultimate goal is to establishment a permanent presence in the town while scouting out another 30 U.S. towns for a similar occupation-style mandate. The writer claims that APF agents are already harassing citizens, setting up roadblocks and that they told a local business owner that they had a register of all the gun owners in the town.
All of this is of course completely illegal and unconstitutional. A private army cannot pose as a police force unless we’re talking about a third world dictatorship or a banana republic, which is what the U.S. has seemingly become.
It seems that Obama’s promise of a “national civilian security force” is being implemented as private mercenary armies are brought in to occupy American towns and set up internment camps for dissidents and people who resist a federal government takeover under the pretext of a swine flu outbreak or similar pandemic
We will have reports directly out of Hardin Montana over the next few days as we track this shocking development.
Watch the CNN clip and the KULR News 8 clip below. Further videos follow.

Unless proved otherwise, this is probably the last single as released by the prolific Shakane. Written for the band by Smith & D’abo, Jenny is the sound of a band going all out for a hit, but with a spectorian Rockfield production by Kingsley Ward from the famed converted barn where Edmunds and The Flamin’ Groovies created their classic sounds. The song itself is a fine Rubettes-like number that should have garnered at the very least heavy Radio 1 play, but it wasn’t to be... The B side is the sublime Gang Man that was recorded two years previously –hear it here: http://purepop1uk.blogspot.com/2009/08/shakane-gang-man.html

I believe there was an EP released in Sweden under an assumed name where Shakane covered a Gary Glitter song. Any more information on that release ...Bob?

WASHINGTON — Active duty forces deploying to war zones and other critical areas are at the front of the vaccine line.
Air Force Gen. Gene Renuart also told The Associated Press that as many as 400 troops are ready to go to five regional headquarters around the country to assist federal health and emergency management officials if needed as the flu season heats up.
The Pentagon has bought 2.7 million vaccines, and 1.4 million of those will go to active duty military. National Guard troops on active duty are also required to receive the vaccine, as are civilian Defense Department employees who are in critical jobs.

AFGHANISTAN WAR -- UPDATE (must read!)

September 26, 2009

WORD

There are 10^11 stars in the galaxy. That used to be a huge number. But it's only a hundred billion. It's less than the national deficit! We used to call them astronomical numbers. Now we should call them economical numbers. - Richard Feynman

The highest form of literary subtlety, in a corrupt social order, is to tell the plain truth-- Edward Abbey

GROWING THE WAR WITHOUT END

Rick Rozoff, Global Research - Over the past week U.S. newspapers and television networks have been abuzz with reports that Washington and its NATO allies are planning an unprecedented increase of troops for the war in Afghanistan, even in addition to the 17,000 new American and several thousand NATO forces that have been committed to the war so far this year.

The number, based on as yet unsubstantiated reports of what U.S. and NATO commander Stanley McChrystal and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Michael Mullen have demanded of the White House, range from 10,000 to 45,000. . .

An additional 45,000 troops would bring the U.S. total to 113,000. There are also 35,000 troops from some 50 other nations serving under NATO's International Security Assistance Force in the nation, which would raise combined troop strength under McChrystal's command to 148,000 if the larger number of rumored increases materializes.

As the former Soviet Union withdrew its soldiers from Afghanistan twenty years ago the New York Times reported "At the height of the Soviet commitment, according to Western intelligence estimates, there were 115,000 troops deployed." Nearly 150,000 U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan would represent the largest foreign military presence ever in the land. . .

McChrystal's evaluation also indicates that the war will not only escalate within Afghanistan but will also be stepped up inside Pakistan and may even target Iran. . .

As to who is responsible for the thirty-year disaster that is Afghanistan, McChrystal's assessment contains a sentence that may get past most readers. It is this:

"The major insurgent groups in order of their threat to the mission are: the Quetta Shura Taliban (05T), the Haqqani Network (HQN), and the Hezb-e Islami Gulbuddin (HiG)."

The last-named is the guerrilla force of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, the largest recipient of hundreds of millions (perhaps billions) of U.S. dollars provided by the CIA to the Peshawar Seven Mujahideen bloc fighting the Soviet-backed government of Afghanistan from 1978-1992.

While hosting Hekmatyar and his allies at the White House in 1985 then President Ronald Reagan referred to his guests as "the moral equivalents of America's founding fathers."

Throughout the 1980s the CIA official in large part tasked to assist the Mujahideen with funds, arms and training was Robert Gates, now U.S. Secretary of Defense.

Last December BBC News reported: "In his book, From the Shadows, published in 1996, Mr Gates defended the role of the CIA in undertaking covert action which, he argued, helped to win the Cold War. In a speech in 1999, Mr Gates said that its most important role was in Afghanistan.

"'CIA had important successes in covert action. Perhaps the most consequential of all was Afghanistan where CIA, with its management, funnelled billions of dollars in supplies and weapons to the mujahideen, and the resistance was thus able to fight the vaunted Soviet army to a standoff and eventually force a political decision to withdraw,' he said."

Now according to McChrystal the same Gulbuddin Hekmatyar who was cultivated and sponsored by McChrystal's current boss, Gates, is in charge of one of the three groups the Pentagon and NATO are waging ever-escalating counterinsurgency operations in South Asia against.

To make matters even more intriguing, former British foreign secretary Robin Cook - as loyal a pro-American Atlanticist as exists - conceded in the Guardian on July 8, 2005 that "Bin Laden was. . . a product of a monumental miscalculation by western security agencies. Throughout the 80s he was armed by the CIA and funded by the Saudis to wage jihad against the Russian occupation of Afghanistan. Al-Qaida, literally 'the database', was originally the computer file of the thousands of mujahideen who were recruited and trained with help from the CIA to defeat the Russians.". . .

Pentagon chief Gates' 27 years in the CIA, including his tenure as director of the agency from 1991-1993, is being brought to bear on the Afghan war according to the Los Angeles Times of September 19, 2009, which revealed that "The CIA is deploying teams of spies, analysts and paramilitary operatives to Afghanistan, part of a broad intelligence 'surge' that will make its station there among the largest in the agency's history, U.S. officials say.

"When complete, the CIA's presence in the country is expected to rival the size of its massive stations in Iraq and Vietnam at the height of those wars. Precise numbers are classified, but one U.S. official said the agency already has nearly 700 employees in Afghanistan. . .

The dramatic upsurge in CIA deployments in South Asia won't be limited to Afghanistan. Neighboring Pakistan will be further overrun by U.S. intelligence operatives also.

On September 12 a petition was filed in the Supreme Court of Pakistan contesting the announced expansion of the U.S. embassy in the nation's capital. Pakistani media have been reporting that the United States plans to deploy a large number of marines with the plan to expand its embassy in Islamabad."

The challenge was organized by Barrister Zafarullah Khan, who "said that Saudi Arabia was also trying to get 700,000 acres of land in the country."

He was quoted on the day of the presentation of the petition as warning "Giving away Pakistani land to U.S. and Arab countries in this fashion is a threat for the stability and sovereignty of the country" and "further added that the purpose of giving the land to U.S. embassy was to establish an American military base. . .

Just as troops serving under NATO command in the war in Afghanistan and Pakistan now include those from almost fifty countries on five continents, so the broadening scope of the war is absorbing vaster tracts of Eurasia and the Middle East.

America's longest armed conflict since that in Indochina and NATO's first ground war threatens to not only remain the world's most dangerous conflagration but also one that plunges the 21st Century into a war without end.
