PIERRE COURBOIS: LIVE in PORGY EN BESS
Op zondagmidddag 23 november 2008 ging het voor het eerst deze winter sneeuwen in Zeeland en de meeste mensen bleven dan ook thuis achter de kachel. Diegenen die de elementen wel trotseerden, kregen er in Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen een prachtig concert voor terug van het Pierrre Courbois Vijfkwarts Sextet.

Pierre Courbois ontving in mei 2008 uit handen van de SP voorman Jan Marijnissen, de VPRO Boy Edgar prijs; een geldprijs en een tournee langs Nederlandse jazzpodia, waaronder de huiskamer van de jazz, Porgy en Bess, georganiseerd door het Muziek Centrum Nederland . In Porgy en Bess bracht Pierre Coutbois zijn Vijfkwarts Sextet mee, met daarin Toon De Gouw op trompet, Jasper Blom op tenorsax, Jan Menu op baritonsax, Willem Kühne aan de piano, Niko Langenhuijzen op bas en, last but not least, de leider Pierre Courbois op slagwerk. Jan Menu verving Ilja Reijngold, die normaal trombone speelt in het sextet.

Pierre Courbois, geboren in april 1940 in Nijmegen, raakte als kind gefassineerd voor drummen en dankzij Willem Arents, die tussen het publiek zat, kon hij als tiener voor het eerst kennnismaken met een echt drumstel. Zijn eerste groep, waarmee hij optrad, was een dixielandband, maar in 1960 kwam hij bij het Ton Wijkamp Quintet terecht, dat, in dat jaar, een prijs op het Loosdrechts Jazzfestival won. Hij studeerde aan het Arnhems Conservatorium en speelde in de Original Dutch Free Jazz Group. Hij groeide uit tot een gewaardeerd lid van de Nederlandse Freejazz beweging en speelde in zijn 50-jarige carriere met grote namen als Gunter Hampel, Rein De Graaff en Dick Vennik, Theo Loevendie, Loek Dikker, Mal Waldron, Jean-Luc Ponty, Bud Powell en Eric Dolphy ( om er maar even een paar te noemen).

Leider van een groep zijn en ook nog drummer is een zelden voorkomende combinatie. Uiteraard roept iedereen nu: En Art Blakey dan? (De uitzondering bevestigt de regel .........) Je kunt als drummer nauwelijks invloed uitoefenen op het melodisch en harmonisch verloop van de muziek. Als compensatie hiervoor ben ik gaan schrijven: zei hij ooit in het artikel: Pierre Courbois Componeren als Compensatie ( Jazzwereld 3 (geen jaartal, maar het was uit 1992). Pierre Courbois is uitgegroeid tot een belangrijk componist en slagwerker. Hij begon met componeren op het eind van de jaren zestig en werd gegrepen door bijzondere maatsoorten, net als Dave Brubeck, en één van zijn eerste composities was Seven, een stuk in een 7/4 maat, dat hij schreef voor zijn Jubileumkwintet. De nummers die zondagavond gespeeld werden door het Vijfkwarts Sextet waren ook allemaal van Pierre's hand en hij vertelde me, dat hij hier een jaar aan gewerkt had. En hij maakte het zijn mannen niet gemakkelijk .........

Tijdens de eerste set werden een vijftal nummers gespeeld. Rééducation Blues, voor deze gelegenheid hernoemd tot de Balkenende Blues, om er, volgens spreekstalmeester Jasper Blom, een Zeeuws tintje aan te geven, ( Jan Peter Balkenende, onze premier komt immers oorspronkelijk uit Zeeland); Insonorisé, een nummer met een latin-ting; Opaque, een Mingus-achtig stuk; de ballad Révocation en het nummer Unsquare Roots. Alle nummers, die tijdens het zondagmiddagconcert in Porgy en Bess ten gehore gebracht worden, zo doceerde Jasper Blom na het eerste nummer, zijn geschreven in een vijf kwartsmaat, dus moet je langzaam meetellen 1 -2 -3 -4 -5 en dan weer opnieuw ..... maar je kunt het ook gewoon over je heen laten komen. Tijdens de tweede set kwamen nummers langs als Lobelia en Cubic Roots, met Jasper Blom op tenor in een prachtige solo. Trouwens, ook Jan Menu, geboren en getogen groot-Terneuzenaar ( volgens Jasper door zijn omgeving gepuscht om muzikant te worden), liet weer eens horen, wat voor een prachtig instrument de baritonsax is in zijn handen. Met February 1953, een verwijzing naar de februariramp van '53, werd de tweede set besloten, niet nadat Pierre Courbois nog eens zijn vaardigheden op het slagwerk demonstreerde. Met name het gebruik van extra pedalen, waarmee hij zijn drumvel kan spannen en ontspannen, zodat verschillende toonhoogtes mogelijk worden, was bijzonder om mee te maken en onderstreepte maar weer eens dat Pierre Courbois terecht deze VPRO Boy Edgar prijs heeft gekregen.

Vergeet niet om live concerten te blijven bezoeken - die zijn voor ons jazzmuzikanten van levensbelang, gaf Jasper Blom na afloop het publiek mee. Natuurlijk heeft hij daarin helemaal gelijk, maar zijn woorden waren, mijns inziens, hier niet op zijn plaats, omdat, vanwege het slechte weer, de echte liefhebbers, de die-hards, de tocht naar Porgy en Bess gemaakt hadden: glibberend over de witbesneeuwde straten; de eigenlijke doelgroep waarvoor de oproep bedoeld was, zat thuis voor de kachel ...........

Unreleased Acetate: All Night Long (with John Christian Ex Shady Lady)

All Night Long/ Down On 42nd Street -EMIDISC Acetate (circa 1974)
Here are full versions of two wild slabs of Proto Punk Glam just oozing ATTITUDE. All Night Long was initially recorded by LA Glamsters Shady Lady and the original recording of All Night Long can be heard here: myspace.com/shadyladyrocks along with other tracks from their album that was unreleased at the time.
The track was written by singer Stefen Shady with guitarist John Christian. John left the band in 1973 and went to London where these two tracks were recorded in 73/74. The sassy vocals are handled by John’s wife Valerie. Both tracks are equally as good and are great examples of NY Dolls sleaze (with a bit of Quatro thrown in) and would have fitted in well with the burgeoning NY Punk scene, but definitely 3 years too early for the UK…I don’t know the name of the band, if anyone knows, please let me know.

I am sad to report that the legendary Licorice Pizza is calling it quits after nearly two years. For those unfamiliar with the blog, it is well known for being one of the best lounge music blogs. There is a great deal of vinyl rips of jazz, exotica, space age pop, and many other vintage sounds to be found there also. If you are familiar with LP, please do go pay your respects and thank this man for two years of music blogging. I will be leaving Licorice Pizza on the blogroll, as it still receives a great deal of traffic; however, you may want to download what you can before it is too late.

PIERRE COURBOIS: LIVE with his VIJFKWARTS SEXTET
On Sunday afternoon the 23rd of November 2008, we had the first snowfall of the year in our region, the province of Zeeland in the southwest part of The Netherlands and the people stayed, for the most part, in their homes. Those who defied the snow got a great concert by the Pierrre Courbois Vijfkwarts Sextet in the Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen, in the southwest part of The Netherlands, near the Belgian border.

Pierre Courbois received the VPRO Boy Edgar Award May 2008, handed by Jan Marijnissen and this concert was part of his tour, organised by the Muziek Centrum Nederland, along Dutch jazz venues. In Porgy en Bess he brought his Vijfkwarts Sextet ( 5/4 Sextet), featuring Toon De Gouw on trumpet, Jasper Blom on tenorand soprano saxophone, Jan Menu on baritone saxophone, Willem Kühne at the piano, Niko Langenhuijzen on bass and, last but not least, the leader Pierre Courbois on drums. Jan Menu replaced Ilja Reijngold, who is the sextet's regular trombone player.

Pierre Courbois, born in Nijmegen, April 1940 became fascinated by the drums as a kid and it was a surprise for him to learn that the man, who first introduced him to a real drum kit, Willem Arents was in the audience. The first band in which he played was a dixieland band, but in 1960 he became part of the Ton Wijkamp Quintet, that won the 1960 Loosdrecht Festival award. While studying at the Arnhem School of Music he was a member of the Original Dutch Free Jazz Group and became an important member of the Dutch Free Jazz movement. He played, during the 1960s and 1970s with musicians like Gunter Hampel, Rein De Graaff and Dick Vennik, Theo Loevendie, Loek Dikker, Mal Waldron, Jean-Luc Ponty, Bud Powell and Eric Dolphy ( to make a long list short).

Being the leader and the drummer, a rare combination ( of course the name of Art Blakey is in our minds now .....), it is hard to influence the sound of the group. Je kunt als drummer nauwelijks invloed uitoefenen op het melodisch en harmonisch verloop van de muziek. Als compensatie hiervoor ben ik gaan schrijven: He said in the article: Pierre Coubois Componeren als Compensatie ( Jazzwereld 3 (no date)(= 1992)). That's why Pierre Courbois is a dedicated composer too. He started to write his musical ideas since the mid 1960s and loves to compose music in uncommon time-signatures, like Dave Brubeck used to do. One of his first compositions was the tune Seven, a 7/4 time-signature tune, composed for his Jubileum-kwintet. He told me that it took a year to compose these numbers, he played in Porgy en Bess, for this so called Vijfkwarts Sextet ( 5/4 time-signature Sextet).

In the first set 5 tunes were played, Rééducation Blues, renamed (as Jasper Blom suggested), to give it a more local meaning, The Balkenende Blues, named after the prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende, who was raised in this part of The Netherlands; Insonorisé, a number with Latin influences, Opaque, the ballad Révocation and Unsquare Roots. Alle nummers (= All tunes), Jasper Blom, tenor saxophone and spokesman of the band, explained, zijn in vijf kwartsmaat, dus moet je langzaam meetellen 1 -2 -3 -4 -5 en dan weer opnieuw ..... maar je kunt het ook gewoon over je heen laten komen. (= all tunes have a 5/4 time-signature, so you should count 1 - 2- 3- 4- 5 and then again 1 - 2 - .... but maybe you better go through it anyway.) The best suggestion, in my opinion.

In the second set tunes like Lobelia and Cubic Roots, with Jasper Blom on tenor saxophone. Another regional related tune, what's in a name, was February 1953, referring to the great 1953 flood that inundated large parts of this province, concluded the second set. In the encore, Pierre Courbois showed some of the techniques that made him famous, like the use of different foot pedal mechanisms, which allows him to change the tones of the drum heads. Great to hear this !

President-elect Barack Obama is expected to name former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker as the head of a new economic recovery board Wednesday, several media outlets are reporting. Volcker, who served as Fed Chairman through 1979 - 1987, received praise for the unpopular decision to ratchet up the Federal Funds rate to combat inflation.

Under Volcker, inflation peaked at 13.5 percent in 1981. Volcker hiked up the federal funds rate, sending the economy into a recession with unemployment rates at their highest since the Great Depression.

Never To Repeat The Same Mistakes.

After a failed relationship,
i warned myself to never repeat my previous mistakes.
I try so hard, but still i do.
That's when i rely too much on you.

I know i shouldnt, but i can't help it.
I'm not independent.
I even depend on you when it comes to simple things like buying food with me.
seeing you every day, talking to you every night,
all these have become a habit.

Now that you want me to be more independent,
its like asking a person who has been relying on wheelchair all along,
to stand up and walk without any support.
that's how difficult it is to me.

TERRORISM OR TRAGICOMEDY?

On the morning of November 11, 150 police officers, most of which belonged to the anti-terrorist brigades, surrounded a village of 350 inhabitants on the Millevaches plateau, before raiding a farm in order to arrest nine young people (who ran the local grocery store and tried to revive the cultural life of the village). Four days later, these nine people were sent before an anti-terrorist judge and “accused of criminal conspiracy with terrorist intentions.” The newspapers reported that the Ministry of the Interior and the Secretary of State “had congratulated local and state police for their diligence.” Everything is in order, or so it would appear. But let’s try to examine the facts a little more closely and grasp the reasons and the results of this “diligence.”

First the reasons: the young people under investigation “were tracked by the police because they belonged to the ultra-left and the anarcho autonomous milieu.” As the entourage of the Ministry of the Interior specifies, “their discourse is very radical and they have links with foreign groups.” But there is more: certain of the suspects “participate regularly in political demonstrations,” and, for example, “in protests against the Fichier Edvige (Exploitation Documentaire et Valorisation de l'Information Générale) and against the intensification of laws restricting immigration.” So political activism (this is the only possible meaning of linguistic monstrosities such as “anarcho autonomous milieu”) or the active exercise of political freedoms, and employing a radical discourse are therefore sufficient reasons to call in the anti-terrorist division of the police (SDAT) and the central intelligence office of the Interior (DCRI). But anyone possessing a minimum of political consc
ience could not help sharing the concerns of these young people when faced with the degradations of democracy entailed by the Fichier Edvige, biometrical technologies and the hardening of immigration laws.

As for the results, one might expect that investigators found weapons, explosives and Molotov cocktails on the farm in Millevaches. Far from it. SDAT officers discovered “documents containing detailed information on railway transportation, including exact arrival and departure times of trains.” In plain French: an SNCF train schedule. But they also confiscated “climbing gear.” In simple French: a ladder, such as one might find in any country house.

Now let’s turn our attention to the suspects and, above all, to the presumed head of this terrorist gang, “a 33 year old leader from a well-off Parisian background, living off an allowance from his parents.” This is Julien Coupat, a young philosopher who (with some friends) formerly published Tiqqun, a journal whose political analyses – while no doubt debatable – count among the most intelligent of our time. I knew Julien Coupat during that period and, from an intellectual point of view, I continue to hold him in high esteem.

Let’s move on and examine the only concrete fact in this whole story. The suspects’ activities are supposedly connected with criminal acts against the SNCF that on November 8 caused delays of certain TGV trains on the Paris-Lille line. The devices in question, if we are to believe the declarations of the police and the SNCF agents themselves, can in no way cause harm to people: they can, in the worst case, hinder communications between trains causing delays. In Italy, trains are often late, but so far no one has dreamed of accusing the national railway of terrorism. It’s a case of minor offences, even if we don’t condone them. On November 13, a police report prudently affirmed that there are perhaps “perpetrators among those in custody, but it is not possible to attribute a criminal act to any one of them.”

The only possible conclusion to this shadowy affair is that those engaged in activism against the (in any case debatable) way social and economic problems are managed today are considered ipso facto as potential terrorists, when not even one act can justify this accusation. We must have the courage to say with clarity that today, numerous European countries (in particular France and Italy), have introduced laws and police measures that we would previously have judged barbaric and anti-democratic, and that these are no less extreme than those put into effect in Italy under fascism. One such measure authorizes the detention for ninety-six hours of a group of young – perhaps careless – people, to whom “it is not possible to attribute a criminal act.” Another, equally serious, is the adoption of laws that criminalize association, the formulations of which are left intentionally vague and that allow the classification of political acts as having terrorist “intentions” or “inclinat
ions,” acts that until now were never in themselves considered terrorist.

Dit is de eerste blog van een nieuwe serie Keep Swinging blogs. Er gaat één en ander veranderen. Je leest er alles over in deze bijdrage, getiteld: 1002: .......... en wat nu?

Vrijdag werd ik aangenaam verrast door een heerlijke taart met daarop het logo van Jazz Door Een Zeeuwse Bril; een kreet, die zo'n 150-tal blogs het motto was. Bedankt voor deze leuke verrassing, me bereid door een aantal familieleden. Leuk. Bedankt hiervoor!

Het uiterlijk van de blog is, zoals je merkt, sinds de 1000ste al wat veranderd - de komende weken zullen er meer stijlaanpassingen komen. Ik hoop dat je de wijzigingen zult kunnen waarderen.
Toen ik in februari 2006 met deze blog startte wilde ik vooral een plaats creëren waar ik mijn passie voor de jazz kon uitdragen en delen met anderen. Het ergerde me te merken dat jazz langzaam maar zeker uit het openbare leven verdween: in de platenzaken werd het bakje met jazz steeds kleiner om uiteindelijk "weggestopt" te worden tussen de "populaire"(?) platenartiesten. Radioprogramma's verdwenen en zenders als Radio 6 en de Concertzender verhuisden naar internet. De omroepen zonden met veel tamtam fragmenten uit, opgedoken uit hun "jazzkelders", maar, oh wee - nooit te lang, de saxofonist mocht zijn solo niet afmaken, want anders was de kijker misschien wel weggezapt naar een andere zender. In Vlaanderen zal dat niet veel anders zijn. Alleen de Franse TVzender Mezzo, die hier in Zeeland op de kabel zit, is een positieve uitzondering. Het "marktaandeel" van jazz loopt steeds verder terug, maar ondanks dat, kom je overal de invloed van de jazzmuziek tegen, in populaire muziek, op straat en in de media, verstopt en weggemoffeld. Ik ontdekte ook dat de kennis die anderen over jazz hadden zeer fragmentarisch was en beperkt tot wat namen als Louis Armstrong of de Dutch Swing College Band en ik vroeg me af hoe (jonge) mensen, die misschien ooit eens wat jazz opgevangen hadden en nieuwsgierig geworden waren, zich daarin zouden kunnen verdiepen. En met verdiepen bedoel ik niet alleen maar bit en bytes downloaden van internet, maar echt kennismaken met de muziek en haar ontwikkeling leren doorgronden.

Maar weinig mensen weten, dat er ook bij hen in de buurt goede jazz te beluisteren valt, niet alleen in Zeeland, waar relatief weinig mensen wonen en dus de spoeling dun is, maar ook op andere plaatsen overal ter wereld; soms op de meest onverwachte plekken. Ik wilde bezoekers van deze blog graag op het spoor zetten van dit soort initiatieven bij hen in de buurt; concerten, die ik zelf ook graag bezocht zou hebben, ook al was dat vaak organisatorisch onmogelijk vanwege de afstand en de tijd. Ik wilde ook aandacht vragen voor de projecten, waar ik me in verdiept had, voor onbekend gebleven en nu vergeten musici, op mooie platen of CD's, waar ik tegenaan gelopen was of op concerten die me verrasten. Het leverde me veel reacties op van over de hele wereld. De blog over de Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra moet wel de toploper geweest zijn; tientallen reacties ontving ik hier op. Ik hoorde dit orkest rond het jaar 1980 in Breda, tijdens het Oude Stijl Jazzfestival en ik voel, zelfs nu nog, de koude rillingen over mijn rug lopen bij het terughoren op CD van het nummer Five Foot Two Eyes Of Blue. Nogal wat mensen waren op zoek naar muziek van dit orkest en kwamen dan al googelend bij deze blog terecht. Helaas heeft dit Tjechische orkest, dat velen nu kennen van hun straatoptredens op de Karelsbrug in Praag, geen eigen website of plek waar hun platen te koop zijn.

Dertig procent van de bezoekers komt uit Nederland, 25 % uit de Verenigde Staten en 20% uit de ons omringende landen.
Een half jaar na de eerste blog vroegen een aantal Nederlandse en Vlaamse bezoekers, waarom de blog niet in hun eigen taal kon; sinds die tijd is de blog tweetalig: Engels en Nederlands.

Er zijn mensen, die menen dat ik gepensioneerd, met de vut of gewoon werkloos ben - niets is minder waar. Ik heb gewoon een vaste baan, die me vier dagen per week meer dan bezig houdt. Een dagelijkse weblog maken betekent vroeg naar bed en vroeg er uit - nu is dat laatste geen straf voor me want ik ben een echt ochtendmens. Ik ontdekte dat zo'n 25 mensen dagelijks trouw de blog openen (bedankt hiervoor!) en verder zijn er nogal wat lezers die 2 of 3 keer per week komen buurten - anderen wachten de nieuwsbrief af; de rest zijn toevallige passanten of surfers op het internet. Ik heb dan ook besloten voortaan niet meer elke dag een blog te maken maar slechts één keer per week. Met andere woorden: voortaan verschijnt in het weekend een nieuw onderwerp (in twee talen). Ik hoop dat iedereen daar begrip voor heeft - het geeft mij de gelegenheid die stapel boeken en CD's, die nog liggen te wachten, door te lezen en te beluisteren, de online discografieën ( Durium en Oscar Alemán) af te maken en bij te werken .......... dat zijn zaken die nu blijven liggen. Bovendien geeft me dit meer ruimte om inhoudelijk dieper op de onderwerpen in te gaan.

De afgelopen 150 blogs hadden het motto: Jazz Door Een Zeeuwse Bril, waarmee ik wilde aangeven een nuchtere kijk op de ontwikkelingen in de jazz te hebben, vanuit mijn woonplaats Heinkenszand, gelegen midden in de provincie Zeeland - niet struikelend van de ene hype in de andere. Bovendien wilde ik de jazz promoten, door vooraankondigingen en recenties van concerten te maken. Helaas merk je dan in een dunbevolkt gebied te wonen; slechts een handjevol jazzliefhebbers lazen deze recenties en reageerden hierop en bij clubs bleek de belangstelling ervoor nihil. Ik heb dan ook besloten, om mijn energie m.n. te richten op die onderwerpen, die lezers boeien in de jazz en hen te verrassen op onopgemerkt gebleven muziek en musici, die de bakken in de platenwinkel en de pagina's van de jazzbladen niet halen. Uiteraard kan dit betekenen dat af en toe nog wel eens een (Zeeuws) concert de revue passeert, maar mijn aandacht richt zich niet meer specifiek op deze regio. De agenda met Zeeuwse- en regionale concerten ( ook de regio Antwerpen, Gent en Brugge doen hier in mee) zal ik nog tot het eind van dit jaar bijhouden voor clubs die daar prijs op stellen.

Morgen ..... geen nieuwe blog te maken - voor het eerst sinds twee jaar en negen maanden blijft de blog leeg. Het geeft mij tijd om meer aandacht te besteden aan de andere blogs, zoals de Choroblog, waar in de laatste bijdrage, getiteld Celebration, ook aandacht aan deze 1000ste blog geschonken werd door de samensteller, de Deen Joergen Larsen; de Hit of the Week blog - de Flexible Records blog en de Oscar Aleman weblog. Volgend jaar wordt in Argentinië het feit herdacht, dat Oscar Aleman 100 jaar geleden geboren werd en dit wil niet onopgemerkt voorbij laten gaan. Bedankt Joergen voor het op de winkel passen als ik vakantie had; uiteraard hoop ik op je te mogen blijven rekenen. Verschillende gastredacteuren hebben hun medewerking al toegezegd, dus er ligt, ook wat dat betreft, nog een mooie toekomst voor onze Keep Swinging blog te wachten. De eerst volgende blog komt waarschijnlijk al aanstaande donderdag uit ( met vrijdag de vertaling), gewoon omdat dat zo beter uitkomt.
