BRAD MEHLDAU: INTROVERTED SOUNDS ON A CHILLY CONCERT

On the 22nd of May 2010 Brad Mehldau performed in a solo concert at the 4th International Jazz Festival of Middelburg in the southwest part of The Netherlands. The festival was scheduled from the 21st up to the 24th of May, 2010.

The music one plays, is never a copy of something played in the past. And music created in the passed, never mind if it is composed by Brahms or played by musicians like Mingus, Parker or Evans is not old fashioned or what-so-ever.( Brad Mehldau)

Brad Mehldau was born in Jacksonville, Fl. August 1970 and lived as a young child in Ireland, before he was adopted and raised by a family in Connecticut. This family had a piano and as a five year old boy he sat behind the keyboard dreaming to become a concert pianist. He got piano lessons in classical music and when he grew up he became interested in popular music; music as played by Weather Report and Herbie Hancock on his Headhunters album. He started to collect records ( he had an almost complete Blue Note album collection) and became fascinated by the music the Greats of Jazz like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker and Charles Mingus had created. He started to play at several gigs and became a student at the New School For Social Research in Manhattan (NY) where he followed the Jazz and Contemporary Music Program. He wasn't a very brilliant student - he preferred to play in the clubs all round New York instead of studying at the university. One of those first bands was the Jesse Davis Quintet - it was with this group he made one of his first records Young at Art ( Concord Jazz CCD-4565). Jesse Davis describes this young promising pianist on the liner notes as: He's 22 years old, and wow!
As a student he left the States for Europe for half a year and played in Ireland ( with Louis Stewart) and Spain, where he met the Rossy brothers ( Jorge Rossy would become his regular drummer). Before he founded his own trio he played with Joshua Redman and is to be heard on one of Joshua's most popular albums MoodSwing. (Warner Bros WB 9362-45643). In 1995, after Joshua had broken with Brad, Mehldau recorded his first own records, first for the Fresh Sound label ( with Perico Sambeat), followed by a numerous series of trio recordings, with Larry Grenadier on bass and Jorge Rossy on drums in the series The Art of the Trio.
Brad's music is introverted and should be played in a small club or theatre with a cozy atmosphere, a good sound system and good chairs - not on a windy and chilly inner square of the Middelburg abbey with some stringent security men on both sides, facing the audience. It was strictly forbidden to take any photos and those rigid security men with earphones who had to monitor seem to have the time of their life. It gave me the feeling to be on the wrong spot at the wrong time. It became a chilly concert, in both senses of the word ...... Only his wife and kids seem to enjoy their day out ...... If you've seen and heard Brad playing the piano, it helps to create a certain image as if Brad is a clone of piano players like Lennie Tristano or Bill Evans. He gets annoyed about that .......... The constant comparison (of this trio) with (the) Bill Evans (Trio) by critics has been a thorn in my side. In the liner notes the of Brad Mehldau - Back to the Vanguard album he says that he listened a few months to Bill Evans when he was 13 or 14 years old - and never to the music of Lennie Tristano. The nonstop claims of their influence on me are not about musical content. Notions of an introverted intellectualism and cloying over emotionalism give the piano trio its otherness in this false appraisal. Brad says that it feels very frustrating to be categorized away with no explanation, when you're trying to create something personal. And I think he's right. Creating music is a process, which develops while performing ......

But what is wrong if one says that the music of Louis Armstrong was influenced by King Oliver? Does that degrade Louis creativity? Or gives it to much honours to Joe ?

Last week I played myself one of Brad's excellent Art of the Trio albums as I like to hear it - at home, with my headset on and no rigid security men on my back............ that's how like it to be served up !!

Andrew Wartts, based in Bloomington, Illinois, recorded his landmark gospel album There Is A God Somewhere in the early 1980s and released it on the small Champ imprint based in Nashville, Tennessee. It took funk archivists years to discover this gem, but it’s a timely resurface. Wartts sound – a mixture of soulful, funky, melancholic yet celebratory exhortations to the Lord – belies the music’s age. In a time when most contemporary-leaning Gospel acts were moving towards the “boogie” sounds of then-pop stars such as Prince and Rick James, Wartts stood firm in his commitment to James Brown style funk. As an example, check out 'Peter And John,' a quirky riff on 'Give It Up, Turn It Loose.' "Remember to wear your walkin' shoes and bring small bills," says Noma Folwer-Sandlin of the Sat, June 5 opening of the Shreveport Farmer's Market.

She adds, "The market has grown from 65 booths to 105! Not just produce; also amazing baked goods, jams and jellies, beef, crafts, and all other great home made, market or farm fresh foods. Plus signs letting you know where it was grown and what percentage was grown by the person selling it. Plus all sorts of foods including meat, cheese and wine."

"We will have our baked goods," says vendor Eric Drabwell, "including ANZAC (Aussie Oatmeal Coconut), Choc Chip, Choc Chip Extreme, Caramel Surprise, Ginger Snap with Cayenne and more, but we will also this year be continuing to sell our Smoked Salmon. Its very good! We sell it vacuum sealed by the piece.

Also my wife, Amy, turns it into Smoked Salmon Dip and that is yummy.
Be early for the Smoked Salmon products too as it tends to "walk out the door!"

The heavily Hammond infused Stonehenge is at the cusp of Library, Prog and Heavy Rock with a certain hum-along quality over a Proto Boogie/Glam chug with the intro’s crashing chords returning strategically throughout the track. Not quite Witch Hunt by Frog, put pretty cool in its obscurity. The B side is another instrumental written and produced by De Wolfe regular Barry Stoller (AKA Rhett Stoller) who wrote the Match of The Day Theme! Groundunder is Nice ‘n Heavy and highlights his dual octave guitar arrangement. Bumble is a fun label to collect with its mix of novelty and outright pop items. Barry Blue (Green) was involved with at least two releases on the label which are worth seeking out: Tank and Cartwright.

Op 22 mei 2010 trad Brad Mehldau solo op tijdens het 4de Internationale Jazzfestival van Middelburg. Het 4de Internationale Jazz Festival werd gehouden van 21 t/m 24 mei 2010 o.a. op het historische abdijplein in het centrum van de stad.

The music one plays, is never a copy of something played in the past. (= Muziek die je speelt is nooit een kopie uit het verleden). And music created in the passed, never mind if it is composed by Brahms or played by musicians like Mingus, Parker or Evans is not old fashioned or what-so-ver. (= En muziek uit het verleden, en dan maakt het niets uit of het gecomponeerd is door Brahms of gespeeld door musici als Mingus, Parker of Evans is nooit ouderwets of oudbollig of zo) ( Brad Mehldau)

Brad Mehldau werd geboren in Jacksonville, Fl. in augustus 1970 en woonde als kleuter in Ierland, voordat hij geadopteerd werd door een artsengezin uit Connecticut. Deze mensen hadden een piano en als vijfjarige droomde hij achter de toetsen van een carrière als concertpianist. Hij kreeg pianolessen en leerde klassieke muziek spelen - toen hij twaalf was ging hij zich interesseren voor de popmuziek uit die tijd; muziek van Weather Report en Herbie Hancock zoals die op zijn Headhunters-album klonk. Hij begon platen te verzamelen en raakte geboeid door de muziek van de Grootten van de Jazz zoals Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker en Charles Mingus. Zijn Blue Note verzameling was nagenoeg compleet. Hij speelde waar hij maar kon en liet zich inschrijven aan de New School For Social Research in Manhattan (NY) waar hij de module Jazz and Contemporary Music volgde. Hij blonk als student niet uit - liever speelde hij elke avond in één van de New Yorkse clubs in plaats van te studeren. Eén van de bands waar hij mee speelde was het Jesse Davis Quintet - met deze groep maakte hij één van zijn eerste platen Young at Art ( Concord Jazz CCD-4565. Jesse Davis zegt dan al over de jonge veelbelovende pianist: He's 22 years old, and wow! ( = Hij is nog maar 22 jaar oud en wow !! ).

Als student verliet hij de VS en bracht een aantal maanden door in Ierland ( met Louis Stewart) en Spanje waar hij de Rossy broers leerde kennen - Jorge Rossy zou later zijn vast slagwerker worden. Voordat hij zijn eigen trio had speelde hij bij Joshua Redman, waar hij o.a. op zijn beroemde album MoodSwing. (Warner Bros WB 9362-45643) te horen is. In 1995, nadat Brad door Joshua aan de kant gezet was, maakte hij zijn eerste plaat onder eigen naam voor het Fresh Sound label ( met Perico Sambeat), gevolgd door een lange rij trio opnamen met Larry Grenadier op bas en Jorge Rossy op slagwerk in een serie getiteld als The Art of the Trio.
Brad's muziek is introvert en hoort m.i. gespeeld te worden in een kleine knusse club met lekkere stoelen en niet op een koud winderig abdijplein met strenge, het publiek inkijkende bewakers, vanwege het feit dat Brad geen enkele fotograaf duldde. Deze eis werd, bijna hardhandig, door strenge mannen met oortjes gehandhaafd en gaf mij het gevoel op de verkeerde tijd op de verkeerde plaats te zijn. Het werd voor mij een kil afstandelijk concert, met alleen zijn vrouw en kinderen, voor wie het optreden een dagje uit leek. Jammer, Brad, pas op dat je niet van je voetstuk valt .......
Als je Brad Mehldau hebt zien en horen spelen op het abdijplein van Middelburg, dan zou wellicht een beeld kunnen ontstaan dat Brad een navolger is van illustere voorgangers op de toetsen als Lennie Tristano of Bill Evans. Aan dit soort beweringen ergert hij zich gruwelijk......... The constant comparison of this trio with the Bill Evans Trio by critics has been a thorn in my side.( = Die contante vergelijking van mijn trio met het Bill Evans Trio is me een doorn in het oog). In het hoesje van zijn album Brad Mehldau - Back to the Vanguard, zegt hij, dat hij ooit een paar maanden intensief naar Bill Evans geluisterd heeft toen hij een jaar of 13-14 was en nog nooit naar de muziek van Lennie Tristano. The nonstop claims of their influence on me are not about musicial content.( = Die non-stop vergelijkingen zijn niet gebasseerd op muzikale argumenten). Notions of an introverted intellectualism and cloying overemotionalism give the piano trio its otherness in this false appraisal. ( = Begrippen zoals naar binnen gekeerd intellectualisme en zoetige overemotioneel onderscheiden dit trio in deze verkeerde inschatting). Brad vindt het frustrerend om steeds ergens bij ingedeeld te worden terwijl het gewoon zijn eigen muziek is, dat hij creëert op het podium. - de muziek van Brad Mehldau. En daarin heeft hij natuurlijk gelijk. Muziekstijlen of lijstjes met musici die elkaar beïnvloed zouden hebben, dienen slechts voor de luisteraar om de muziek te ordenen, maar worden vaak misbruikt om die te beoordelen. Maar wat is er mis mee als je beweert dat de muziek van Louis Armstrong beinvloedt is door King Oliver? Doe je daarmee Louis dan te kort of geef je de King daarmee te veel eer?

De beschrijving van dit concert tijdens de eerste festivaldag door mede-blogger Noud Hovius in Langs De Atonale Afgrond wil ik jullie niet onthouden.

Afgelopen week maar weer eens één van Brad’s Art of the Trio platen opgezet en genoten - op de juiste plek en tijd ...... zonder mannen-met-oortjes, die in mijn nek staan te hijgen …………..

Een definitie voor muziek bevindt zich tussen trillende lucht en emotie. Als er geen trillende lucht is hoor je niets en als de emotie je niet raakt of je niet bereikt dan doet het je niets. De muziek van Brad Mehldau behoort tot het beste wat er op het gebied van jazz improvisatie te beluisteren valt, maar of daarvoor een kil winderig plein met hijgende bewaking in je nek de juiste plek is om daarvan te genieten, valt te betwijfelen ..........
