All tracks Produced by Shelby S. Singleton Jr. for Shelby Singleton International Productions
Recorded at Singleton Sound Studios, Nashville, Tennessee 1967-1976

'Nashville. 1967. Something was in the air and things were about to get weird. Enter Shelby S. Singleton Jr., already a music industry veteran, he went independent with his own Plantation label. Singleton wanted to call the shots and follow his own smarts...he did and the result was incredible success and astounding music.

It’s all chronicled here: from the bizarre “Japanese Country” of Tokyo Matsu, the lysergic sitar-drenched bop of Ray “Wong” Riley’s “Happy Valley CIA” and the affecting, philosophical musings of Dee Mullins’ “I Am The Grass” to, of course, the international chart explosion of Jeannie C. Riley’s timeless tirade against hypocrisy “Harper Valley PTA”. A delirious stew of story songs, topical ruminations, exploitation-freakouts and the finest country-pop you’ve never heard!

Deluxe collector’s edition 2CD featuring rare period photos, exclusive scholarly liner notes and incredible sounds remastered direct from the Plantation/SSS vault! Many tracks are previously unissued and almost all have never appeared on CD before. Prepare yourself, you’re about to hear a Nashville you never thought possible.'

Happy New Year...with Seacrest in NYC! Dazzliing Vegas-style soirees!

Holly Madison & a drinkie-pooh!

While MySpace pal Ryan Seacrest excitedly rehearses for Dick Clark's wildly extravagant annual New Year's bash to unfold tonight (where one million strong are expected to trek into the "Big Apple" in NYC to toast the town) - a host of party-hearty midnight-madness revellers - are pondering where to ring 2011 in (even in the 11th hour).

Without doubt - a posse of 'em will brave the elements as they ceremoniously join in on the much-anticipated fun-filled "count-down" (naked so-to-speak) in the packed mean streets of Manhattan.

Elsewhere - in the desert Oasis - 'neath twinkling stars or stormy romantic backdrop - the madding crowds in Vegas will be toasting each other, kissing the air cheek-to-cheek, and bidding adieu to economic blues just about behind 'em.

Of course, it's a no-brainer in another respect, too.

Thousands of chic gamblers will be elegantly dressed to-the-nines - as they engage in a glorious search for an upbeat indoor soiree - guaranteed to elevate the mood and ring in Lady Luck!

The tony well-heeled elite may be trotting into a couple of the high-profile destinations listed below where charismatic hosts will be presiding over the festive proceedings:

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

The P5 would like to wish you all a safe, happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Activist and artist Robin Rothrock, founder of Shreveport's Hope Clinic, is dead of cancer at age 60

During her 25 years in Shreveport very few people knew where the late Robin Rothrock lived. Because she was manager of Hope Medical Group for Women, an abortion clinic, she was constantly subject to harassment. Though her nature was to be outgoing and generous, she had to guard her privacy.

Rothrock was a leader in the perennial struggle to keep abortion available in the region. According to a generously honorary article in the Times, her clinic was "at one time was the only abortion provider in a 400-mile area between Dallas and Jackson, Miss."

Opening the clinic in 1980, Rothrock became a steady visitor to Baton Rouge for lobbying. With a background in sociology from her home state of Florida, she was an articulate and passionate voice for women's rights.

Rothrock, a woman quick to smile and one able to spar with geniality, was well-traveled among the leading businessmen, politicians and physicians of Shreveport and the state of Louisiana. She enjoyed debate and challenges and felt that full extensions of women's rights, even in ill-educated Louisiana, was inevitable.

"She has stuck with the effort to provide abortion care through thick and thin: clinic assaults, fire bombs, protesters, and state regulations aimed at reducing access to abortion care," wrote Pearl Serbanic in nominating Rothrock for a Woman's Health Hero award.

In recent years she became a successful artist, displaying and selling visual art at one time from her Backroom Gallery in the Arodasi Center on Market St. Her art was included in shows at Artspace Shreveport and Bistineau Gallery and displayed at Prima Tazza and Bella Fresca.

She founded Highway Grrls Gallery & Studio near her home in Melbourne, Florida.

"Rothrock was president of the League of Women Voters of Louisiana in the 1980s," wrote the Times."She remained politically active despite a four-year battle against breast cancer."

See a descriptive article on Shreveport and Rothrock in Mother Jones magazine.

Is Requiring the Noble Act Unethical?

If you work in criminal law you spend much of your time hearing why someone shouldn't be incarcerated and/or why they should get out of jail/prison. Most of the fall under the umbrella of the Big Four and usually they don't work after someone has gone to prison.

Nevertheless, Jamie and Gladys Scott are getting out of prison. Sixteen years ago the two women were part of a violent robbery in which they lured two people to a spot where they were jumped by three others with a shotgun and each was hit in the head. The effort didn't garner much for the robbers because the victims only had $11. Each sister was sentenced to life in prison. Apparently, this has been a cause celebre in Mississippi where the women's supporters focus on the fact that happenstance caused only $11 to be stolen rather than the armed robbery in which purposeful violence was done to each victim.

In any event, the governor is suspending the sentence of both women. One sister's kidneys have gone bad and she is costing the prison system a lot of money in care, so she's getting a release. The other sister wants to donate her kidney to the ailing sister. The governor has agreed to suspend her sentence on condition that she do so.

And there's where people start having problems. Is the governor's requirement legal since you are not allowed to "sell" organs and threatening life in prison puts a price on an organ? Is it ethical for the governor to require an inmate to give up a body part as a condition of a suspended sentence? What happens if the two are not compatible and the transplant cannot take place?

Let's start with the compatibility question first. Every lawyer in the world knows the answer to this. Impossible terms of a contract cannot be enforced. If the organ is not compatible with her sister she'll still get the benefit of her bargain as long as she entered into it in good faith. As you'll see below, I don't think this is an actual contract, but conditions agreed to for probation are generally treated as though they were a contract.

As for the legality and ethics of the situation, that's something of a red herring. This isn't so much a forcing her to do it situation as it is a trust but verify one. The governor didn't go to her and make an offer "Give up the kidney and you get out." Instead, she went to him and said "I need to get out so I can give my sister a kidney." In the first case there would be an offer and acceptance with mutual consideration. In the second case the governor is not getting anything so there's really no consideration on his side.

The manner in which Governor Barbour is handling this is the correct way of handling this sort of situation. Anyone who has worked in criminal law knows that there are a lot of people out there who will say and offer anything to get out of their sentences. They may even mean it when they offer. However, somewhere between the doors of the jail and the point at which they would accomplish their good intentions they lose their way, never accomplishing the good they intended. There are various causes for this - old friends, partying, drugs, apathy, etc. However, if it's in an agreement with which failure to abide means returning to prison, they are more likely to follow through. And if they don't they can serve as an example to the next person who gets a sweetheart deal and might consider blowing it off after he gets out.

Mind you, I hope that the mere nobility of the sister's heart will keep her on track to helping save her sister. However, I've seen too many family members mess over each other once they're out of jail to think he should let her go without some means of verifying that she does what she says she will.

Billy the Kid is Still an Outlaw

Y'know, it's kinda cool that the governor is up on his history, but is contemplating a pardon for Billy the Kid really that important of an issue?

Music Reviews 10: MRAs 2010

This year has been the year of the pop, indeed. The frontwomen of pop music Katy Perry, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Ke$ha have been dominating the charts for the entire year, one after the other. This year saw many British acts enjoying continued success with the likes of The Wanted, The Saturdays, Cheryl Cole, Pixie Lott, Alexandra Burke and Matt Cardle amongst others having a truly great year.

The women of Country music have also put up a big fight, with Taylor Swift breaking more records with third multi-platinum album Speak Now, Carrie Underwood headlining an enormously successful Play On Tour, and Miranda Lambert sweeping up the awards this year.

Then there was the fad that Alicia Keys and Jay-Z started with Empire State of Mind with rappers including pop singers on their tracks, sparking Eminem's smash collaboration with Rihanna Love The Way You Lie, T.I. and Christina Aguilera's Castle Walls and the latest to join the fad, Far East Movement's Rocketeer with Ryan Tedder that's flying up the charts right now.

Glee was bigger than ever this year and truly made a mark on 2010 in music. But 2010 is just getting us prepared for the epicness of 2011, where we'll see the original ladies battle it out in 2011 - Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson etc.

But we shouldn't forget the guys who shook up the industry this year with Bruno Mars leading the way, followed by the likes of Adam Lambert, Kris Allen, Train, Enrique Iglesias etc.

Suffice to say, 2010 was a great year in music and here are the list of winners for the MRAs 2010!

MRAs 2010:
The second annual MRAs saw you guys going on Twitter to spread the word about the MRAs, with Diana Vickers retweeting a tweet about the MRAs and Tamar Kaprelian going on Facebook to tell you guys to support her, and the support that the MRAs have gotten from you guys has been overwhelming.

'The M Squared label operated in Sydney, Australia from 1980 to 1983. Founded by Mitch Jones and Michael Tee of seminal noisemakers Scattered Order, and quickly joined by Systematics' Patrick Gibson, the label produced 24 vinyl and seven cassette releases over three hectic years. It all took place in a modest recording studio in an inner city terrace house.

The M Squared catalogue, then and now, is resistant to classification. Contemporary journalists tagged it experimental, electronic and avant-garde – shorthand for 'not what the rest of us are listening to'. In hindsight it's been described as post punk, minimalist, synth wave, no wave, synth pop, ambient, noise, pop electronica, art rock... whatever. Genres were never the point, and many M Squared artists took more than one approach to their music.

During the label's brief lifespan, Sydney's inner city was home to a great variety of sounds that existed almost completely outside the mainstream. M Squared, its artists and supporters had, over the intervening 30 years or so, been largely unacknowledged as a small but vibrant episode in the story of Australian music.

This 30-year anniversary set includes tracks from Systematics, The Makers of The Dead Travel Fast, Scattered Order, Ya Ya Choral, A Cloakroom Assembly, Patrick Gibson, Prod, Pel Mel, Wild West, SoliPsiK, The Limp, Tame O'Mearas, Severed Heads, Height/Dismay, Belle du Soir, The Slugfuckers, The Same, Splendid Mess, Pleasant Peasants and The Barons. In addition, a 36 page booklet contains a label history, recollections from the bands involved and unpublished photos. And to slip under your glass as you sit comfortably for a listen, a set of commemorative drink coasters. Cheers'

Reading List

I went shopping today after dropping my boyfriend off at the station. He's spending NYE in London while I stay with family in Manchester, so after saying goodbye, I consoled myself with a bit of retail therapy. Urban Outfitters was crazy busy, but I found a quiet spot and had a flick through some of the books, and decided on my style reading list for 2011.

All the images are courtesy of amazon.co.uk where you can buy both of these stylish tomes.

I love nothing more than looking through style and design books on a rainy weekend, so I am really excited to receive these when I return to London in January!

Activities will include: making noisemakers, dragon puppets and clock-face painting. The dragon puppets will be used later in the day during the Dragon Parade which will take place inside the Center at 2 p.m. There will be a countdown to “midnight” at Noon followed by a balloon drop off of the Center’s 2nd floor balcony inside, and Sci-Port’s President/CEO Ann Fumarolo will give a New Year salutation. Sleaz Band –Midnight Man

Sleaz Band –All I Want Is You/ Midnight Man –Fontana 6007 034 (1974 UK)

Midnight Man is a short (under 2 minutes!) and snappy No Brain-Boogie Cruncher with Proto Punk velocity and unreconstructed 70s values. It deserved to come out in 74 where it firmly belongs. The A side is OK, it also rocks out but in a more subdued (read commercial) manner, but the B side is the real keeper here with its wild cheap Fuzz pedal. Stay tuned for the final ending... This single was the only released output from this long standing Dundee band who hooked up with Jim Kelly (Ex Honeybus) in time for this recording. Big News: What can you expect with HURTS' collaboration with Leona Lewis?

It was previously announced that Leona Lewis had begun work on her third studio album with a planned release in Summer 2011. Then the collaborations started filling in, and we saw Leona Lewis working with the man that has bought the great and the bad to her discography, Ryan Tedder. Nevertheless, another collaboration that surfaced was that Lewis was to work with David Guetta. I'm not too sold on that on as I think David Guetta produces the music to a point where there's barely any soul left in the vocal.

Nevertheless, the very recent collaboration that leaked through was one with British duo Hurts. It's interesting to see how this pans out because this could be groundbreaking.. Or not. Both are fans of each other's and Hurts have recently said they would like to turn Leona into a gothic diva. Hmmmm. Don't mind me asking, but hasn't Leona played the gothic card with her debut headlining The Labyrinth Tour?

But maybe she'll get darker and darker. Let's hope her next album doesn't suffer the same fate as Echo though, that felt way too overproduced that it just left me cold.

Why Do We Always Lose the Zombie Apocalypse?

So, I was watching AMC's "The Walking Dead" when an important question hit me: How in the world did we lose to the zombie horde?

I mean, I get that there would be significant losses at the beginning. There would be initial losses of doctors and first responders before it got figured out. Then we'd all have warning. From that point a bunch of zombies stumbling along at one mile per hour should be pretty easy to handle.1

Of course, there will be greater casualties among liberals. Liberals would not have firearms to shoot the zombies in their heads as they closed in. As well, I figure San Francisco is just to be written off. As soon as the government starts to shoot zombies there will be massive demonstrations and rallies in San Fran in support of Zombie-Americans. Thousands upon thousands of tree hugging, tie-dye wearing, hippy types will throng the streets with signs decrying imperialistic capitalism oppressing our zombie comrades. Then, as the zombies start to encircle them, they won't run away because they want to show solidarity. Thus, there will be massive casualties and a ton of people who got away after just being bitten will turn and the zombie army will be too large for San Fran to be held. In the end the military will at least have to napalm the city to destroy the masses of zombies occupying the streets. The military's first instinct would probably be to nuke San Fran (just on general principals), but I figure some admirals may lobby to save the naval facilities.2

Beyond the liberals there would also be those who were just too sentimental to throw Aunt May out after she was bit. So, we'll lose a fair number of people just because they are compassionate.

And, while the police, firemen, gang-members and suburban NRA members are fighting the zombies in the cities, there won't be much of a problem in the rural areas and mountains because out there firearms aren't considered an option, they're considered an appendage. Your basic zombie starts walking down the street in Honaker, Virginia and I'm sure somebody is going to take care of it pretty quick. Heck, even without firearms a guy who works on a farm or in a mine is probably going to be proficient enough with hand held tools to run up on a zombie and kill it with a pick or axe or shovel or whatever else is handy.

And, then there's the military reaction. You know, I was a REMF, M.I. guy and I was a good enough shot with my M-16 that I could have stood at the end of a street and shot a couple dozen zombies in the head (for some reason that's the only way to kill them) as they shuffled down the street toward me. I'm pretty sure soldiers in the combat units would do extremely serious damage to the zombies. Heck, with slow moving, easy shots, you might even be able to train sailors - and maybe even possibly airmen - to fight as though they are actually in the military. I give it six months, a year at the most, before the military has the situation entirely in hand.

Now, some of you are going think that a zombie apocalypse might not be such a terrible idea. There would be a huge drop in moonbats in the world (see San Francisco supra). However, this would leave us with no balance for the wingnuts. After all, the wingnuts are going to be the people out in compounds in the middle of Colorado with 10 firearms each and enough stocked food to last ten years (y'know, the ones the ATF & FBI haven't raided yet). Not sure I want to live in a world that unbalanced. Maybe if we could just contain the zombie outbreak to San Fran and NYC . . .

1 Yes, I realize there are some outlier movies wherein the zombies move fast, but that's just silliness. In any event, fast zombies would probably result in greater casualties, but not zombie victory.

2 This is not to say that all of California will be lost. I figure that L.A. will do pretty well. Heck, between police who aren't afraid to use force when they can and gangs which have kids holding territory on every street corner the zombies won't stand a chance.
