Dell and Sony report mass hardware failures + Art Lebedev shows off Optimus Popularis keyboard

After all the attention heaped on the iPhone 4 and its antenna and screen woes, two big PC manufacturers have come out today with bad news about their machines. According to Gizmodo, documents have been unsealed that show Dell shipping 11.8 million Optiplex computers in 2003-2005 with a 97% failure rate. Apparently, the capacitors built into those motherboards were almost always going to fail, and Dell was perfectly aware of the situation. It was a cost-cutting measure, one that they shockingly didn't expect to get stung by in the future. According to the NY Times investigation of the issue, employees were told to obfuscate the real reason for the failure from upset customers. In an email exchange uncovered by lawyers working on the ongoing case, one employee said, “We need to avoid all language indicating the boards were bad or had ‘issues’ per our discussion this morning.” Ira Winkler, a former NSA analyst and technology consultant, did not have good things to say about the venerable PC maker.

“They were fixing bad computers with bad computers and were misleading customers at the same time...They knew millions of computers would be out there causing inevitable damage and were not giving people an opportunity to fix that damage.”

The other fiasco was started by Sony, who is recalling 500,000 Vaio laptops today, citing temperature control issues that can distort the shape of the notebooks and cause actual burning of human skin, according to. There is a download that Sony is making available that will allegedly fix the defect, but Sony is offering free physical repairs to ameliorate the problem as well, according to Gizmodo. A commenter on Gizmodo's story reported that his Vaio actually comes with a bright yellow warning label that cautions the user to never use the computer while the laptop is touching your skin.

Art Lebedev shows off Optimus Popularis keyboard

Art Lebedev Studio garnered a lot of attention when their Optimus Maximus keyboard concept surfaced in 2005. The peripheral touted a full set of OLED keys that were 100% user-customizable and looked downright amazing. After three years in development and many, many delays to the point of actually being labeled as "vaporware," the Optimus Maximus keyboard finally began shipping in 2008 with an obscene price tag of around $1,500.

Needless to say, not too many were sold. Now the company is back with another concept keyboard - one that is smaller, sleeker and promises to be less expensive compared to the original Optimus Maximus. The Optimus Popularis uses a "chicklet" style layout and thinner profile than its predecessor. It also drops the numeric keypad on the right, but when every key features a customizable LED display on top I guess that's less of a problem - and it saves a lot of money.

The new Popularis keyboard will supposedly feature OLED screens that encompass the individual keys' entire physical real estate with a 64x64 pixels resolution, up from 48x48 on the Maximus. There's also a long widget display mounted between the function and number keys. Art Lebedev says it expect to ship the peripheral "at the end of this year/beginning of next year" for less than $1000. The company doesn't have a fantastic track record when it comes to meeting deadlines, so we wouldn't hold our breath on that release timeframe. As for the price, hopefully less than $1,000 doesn't mean $999.

"The food starts serving at 12 noon, the cost is $14: movie with a high class meal. For more details go to our website www.montyandmarsha.com"

Negotiations remain alive between musicians and the board of the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra

Writes symphony musician Rick Rowell on Wed afternoon, "We saw the e-mail and blog info circulating about the SSO. We thought it was important to send the news out to musicians as we received it - before it came from someone else. Due to another turn of events, however, we may not be finished with all of this yet."

"People are still discussing some possibilities, and there is an exec. comm. meeting taking place even as I write this. So encourage those with whom you have contact to withhold judgment and keep their fingers crossed for another day or two."

going to KENTUCKY?

I had a DREAM a few nights ago....
I had over-extended my time in the pool
and was one of the last ones to get out...
my friends and I ran to the parking lot across the street, dripping wet...
we saw a tow truck removing cars
One of my friends noticed that the tow truck
was hooked up to his vehicle....
He ran up to the tow truck driver and asked if he could
release his car......and the driver obliged
Then the tow truck hooked up to another friends car...
She did the same and asked the driver to release her car...
He obliged
At this point I noticed that I can't see my car...
it was missing
did the tow truck already haul it away?
So I went up to the driver and asked him if he towed my car
He said "yes"
I asked him " Where is it? Is it at the Impound Lot?"
He said "No"....."It is in KENTUCKY"
K E N T U C K Y ?
Feeling hopeless....I explained that I needed my car for a special appt.
He said " Well, you will need to go to Kentucky to get it"
My interpretation of this dream has to do with living with this newly acquired cronic condition....
The friends in the dream represent the 2 people that I have met at dialysis, who recently had surgery the same time as me....theirs were successful...mine was not. Perhaps their car represents their progress along this dialysis/ kidney failure journey...they are free to go.
My car is stuck in a place that seems unreachable.
I guess I need to decide how committed I am to the journey ahead.
Most days I feel defeated...so I find myself on the fence
I need to decide whether to stay or to leave....
or in this case....go to KENTUCKY!

Evidently, the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra is dead; long live the symphony orchestra

Writes Deborah Scarlatto, a keen observer of the ups and downs of the local orchestra, " Last night the Shreveport Symphony Board voted to close the symphony. I am not privileged to details, but the musicians felt that they were very close to a workable solution."

Scarlatto continues, "I am having a great deal of difficulty grasping the idea that a group of adults would just pull the plug. Personally, I do not think this is a wise move and I hope I do not have to see any Symphony Board members for a long while. I know that I would want to share my feelings with them and I would not be very pleasant. Perhaps we can somehow keep the music and musicians playing through other venues. What a terribly sad day for the culture of this area."

Responding to her news, former SSO president David Lillien offered, "The silver lining is that now that the admin and board are gone, poof, a new organization can be formed."

And in a similar vein, Ky Mason offered, " Throughout this disturbing ordeal for our players and patrons, I have been recalling the events that led to the development of what is now the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. I believe there is much to gain from their experience, and, if I remember correctly, Shirley Trusty Corey had an instrumental hand in those efforts. I recommend we seek her input.

I believe there is much better opportunity of which the new regime can avail and achieve great success and a wonderfully realistic future - one that creatively meets the marketing and membership goals of today's societal interests!

Best of luck to all. There are many on the sidelines who will lend energy and support!"

East Bank Gallery party for painters Emily Ezell and Joshua Chambers on Thurs, July 8, 5:30 to 7:30 pm

Emily Ezell is a young artist who is ready to ride her canvasses out of the Deep South. She has been working on her painterlyliness at La Tech and is doing quite nicely with portraits, figure studies and servings of crusty pie.

Connect with her development at her blog, emilyezell. That's where I also peeked into her version of the art world via the links she has listed on the right side of page. Quite a stimulating roll call, Emily.

Joshua Chambers is also a scrambling young artist, getting his first exhibits and teaching jobs after completing studies at La Tech. In fact, based on the informative joshuachambers.com, it is apparent that he loves painting and is working pell mell to find his voice.

When I posted a photo of a painting that he exhibited recently at Meadows Museum there was a positive reaction. In it, a sort of ridiculous fellow on a winged contraption flies in a circle while tethered to the top of an oil derrick located in the desert.

Meet the artists and examine their work at East Bank Gallery in a reception on Thurs, July 8, 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

ISRAELI TERRORISM - Romantic!

ISRAELI TERRORISM - Romantic!

tzipilivni New York Times reporter calls Zionist terrorism romantic

A little-noticed comment in a New York Times interview with Israeli opposition leader Tzipi Livni has critics arguing that it shows the media has a "double standard" when it comes to terrorism.

In an interview published Tuesday, Livni, the leader of Israel's centrist Kadima party, boasted that her parents, both members of the Zionist militant group Irgun in the 1940s, were the first couple to be married in the newly-formed state of Israel.

"Both of them were in the Irgun," Livni said. "They were freedom fighters, and they met while boarding a British train. When the British Mandate was here, they robbed a train to get the money in order to buy weapons."

To which New York Times reporter Deborah Solomon responded: "It was a more romantic era."

"I've met interviewer Deborah Solomon -- smart lady," writes Philip Weiss, who brought attention to the comment on his blog. "I wonder whether she was inoculated, as I was, by Zionism, and to what degree. This is typically one-sided."

Weiss points out that Irgun, which was fighting for the creation of a Jewish state, was responsible for the bombing of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem in 1946. That attack killed 91 people, including US and British nationals, and is believed to remain to this day as the most deadly militant attack in the history of the conflict between Israel and its neighbors.

Irgun's membership was absorbed into the Israeli Defence Force after the creation of Israel. Its political arm is a predecessor to today's Likud party, whose leader, Benjamin Netanyahu, is prime minister of Israel.

Matt Duss at ThinkProgress goes even further than Weiss in his criticism of the Times' portrayal of Irgun.

"What.s amazing here is not only does Solomon neglect to challenge Livni.s characterization of her parents. membership in a terrorist group as 'freedom fight[ing],' Solomon herself volunteers further assistance in the whitewash," he opines.

Duss points out that, at the time of Irgun's attacks, the Times itself referred to the group's activities as "terrorism."

"Can you imagine any mainstream American journalist performing this service in regard to Hamas terrorism? I doubt it," Duss writes.

Ed Kirkeby in the Roaring Twenties

Ed Kirkeby's first meeting with Fats Waller - 75 years ago ( English) Ed Kirkeby's eerste ontmoeting met Fats Waller - 75 jaar geleden ( Nederlands) Ed Kirkeby in the Roaring Twenties ( English) Ed Kirkeby in de jaren twintig ( Nederlands)

Crooner and manager in a maze of pseudonyms
ED KIRKEBY IN THE ROARING TWENTIES
Hans Koert

Ed Kirkeby is known by most people as the manager of Thomas Fats Waller. He even wrote a book about Fats Waller's life, entitled: Ain't Misbehavin'- The Story of Fats Waller by Ed Kirkeby ( 1966). But few people remember that he was also a bandleader and crooner during the Roaring Twenties. I love to share with you some of the music he made.
That Certain Party - Goofus Five ( dec 1925)

This Goofus Five featured (prob.) Roy Johnston, trumpet - Bobby Davis, alto saxophone - Adrian Rollini, bass sax - Irving Brodsky, piano - Tommy Fellini, banjo - Herb Weil, drums - Billy Jones the leading vocal - Ed Kirkeby is to be heard in the responses - doing the remarks.

Ed Kirkeby ( 1891-1978)
In the 1920s he became the first recording manager for Columbia Records, who recorded bands like the California Ramblers, a popular dance band that was born out of the obscure Merry Melody Men. Wallace T. "Ed" Kirkeby ( 1891 - 1978), as his full name was, recorded early 1920, as a band leader, now obscure bands like the Superior Jazz Band.
University Six ( from: http://www.redhotjazz.com/universitysix.html )
Collectors of 1920s dance bands know the Little Ramblers, which was a quintet selection from the California Ramblers, founded to play popular dance music. The California Ramblers was very popular during this period and made hundreds of records - not only for Columbia, but also for Edison, where they were labeled as the Golden Gate Orchestra. The Little Ramblers appear on a dozen different labels with a dozen different names: You have to be an expert ( or have a decent discography on the shelves) to learn all the pseudonyms: The Five Birmingham Babies ( for Pathé); The Goofus Five (Okeh); the Vagabonds (Gennett); University Six ( Harmony); The Varsity Eight ( Cameo) or Ted Wallace and his Orchestra - and Ted Wallace was one of the pseudonyms for crooner vocalist ....... Ed Kirkeby.
Love to share with you a tune recorded by the Hot Air Men (another one !!) sung by Ed Kirkeby entitled Chinnin' and Chattin' With May ( Columbia) ( April 1930)

The Goofus Five ( from: http://www.redhotjazz.com/goofusfive.html )

In the early 1930s Ed directed numerous recording sessions for the ARC, the American Record Company, a company which released cheap records like Banner, Domino, Conqueror, Jewel, Romeo etc. and during these sessions pseudonyms were used, a normal practice in the 1920s, but also real band leader's names were used, although they hadn't been in the studios at all. Musicians, who were unemployed, were hired to play during the recording sessions and so they could earn some money to make a living. In fact Durium did the same with his Hit of the Week Orchestra. Bandleaders, we guess, sometimes even "sold" their identity to ARC. It might be possible that sometimes these bandleaders may have arranged some of the music, but fact is that ARC found it acceptable to rename the bands on the labels? Even musicians sold their identity sometimes. Strange dubious obscure practices in which Ed Kirkeby, possible, played his part which should be seen as result of the Depression.

It seems that in the mid 1930s Ed stopped to perform and sing active, except some incidental performances with the "re-born" California Ramblers. At the 1943 WNWE Second American Swing Festival Ed Kirkeby did not sing; he was there to talk (and read a little script) about Fats. His best vocals, however, were made during the 1920s.

The 1943 photos on this blog show Ed during one of his public appearances after the death of Fats Waller, December 1943. Chris Albertson remembers him from that period: I met Ed Kirkeby fifty years ago, when he often held court on the sidewalk in front of the Brill Building. He was quite the character and he had retained the look of an earlier time, including a waxed mustache and spats.

Enjoy: After You've Gone buy the Golden Gate Orchestra as released at a June 1927 Perfect record. The personnel is: Chelsea Quealey, trumpet - Bobby Davis, reeds - Max Farley, reeds - Adrian Rollini, bass sax and goofus - Jack Russin, piano - Tommy Fellini, banjo - Herb Weil, drums. Ed Kirkeby is the director and whistler ( or is it Adrian Rollini with the Goofus?). A great tune with Adrian Rollini on bass sax. .............

Ed Kirkeby ( 1891 - 1978 ) became active in music since 1916 up to the year before he passed away as manager from bands like the California Ramblers (early 1920s) - from the ARC-Brunswick Studio bands ( early 1930s) - The Pickens Sisters ( in the 1930s) - Thomas Fats Waller ( 1938 - 1943) up to Pat Flowers ( in the 1970s). He worked for Columbia, Victor ( later RCA-Victor) and NBC, but for me he is still the voice behind dozens of well known dance band tunes from the 1920s

Finally a fragment from the tune Mine Oh Mine as recorded by the California Ramblers on a Columbia record, December 1927. Ed Kirkeby is one of the members of the vocal trio: Sammy Fain, Ed Kirkeby and Artie Dunn.

Although Ed KIrkeby is remembered as the manager of Fats Waller, he also was a gifted vocalist or crooner if you like. During the 1920s his voice is to be heard on numerous dance band recordings of bands with imaginative names, like the University Six, the Goofus Five or the Varsity Eight - in fact all the same group of people: Swindle or marketing? Fact is that Ed Kirkeby was one of them using several pseudonyms as a crooner. The Keep Swinging blog loves to help you to find the right way in the maze of band names. No more

cretino el padecer que me amanece tarde,
que tan oprobioso desafía mis despueses,
que rebalsa y remuele todas las mañanas
hasta volverlas maculado y cruel principio

cruzo los finales
más que herido
más que tosco

ningún inicio volverá
a ser como el que fue

VA ~ The Yemen Tihama: Trance & Dance Music from the Red Sea Coast of Arabia [Topic/ British Library]

The ferocious heat on Tihama, the Red Sea coastal plain of Yemen, is matched in the intensity of the tibbal musique, an African-Arabian amalgam that features lyres, reeds and virtuoso drumming. Its practitioners are largely drawn from the akhdam, an outcast group with a reputation for sorcery. Recordings & text by the prodigious Anderson Bakewell, 1982

it is very warm here lately, but not nearly as hot as it is in Tihama, one of the hottest regions on earth, which receives little benefit from the bi-annual monsoons. The Tihami are a profoundly resilient people & just to listen to their recordings is to find out what these folks do when it's hot. be sure to read all about em in the enclosed booklet written by Anderson Bakewell to accompany his masterful recordings of these trances & dances. an invaluable resource for a globally warmer tomorrow. huge thanks to 博林戈 for sharing. further
