The GOODSON GRAMOPHONE RECORD CO. LTD. London, England - zoals de maatschappij zich voluit op de plaat noemt, produceerde tussen 1929 en 1931 talloze onbreekbare gramofoonplaten. Eén van de opvallende karakteristieken van deze Goodsonplaat is zijn witte kleur en het ontbreken van een papieren label rond de spindel. De tekst op de plaat werd dan ook over de groef gedrukt, waardoor de mogelijkheid bestond het oppervlak te benutten voor gedrukte reclamedoeleinden. In Het Leven van 29 november 1930 werd een artikel geplaatst getiteld Goodson Gramophone Record: een nieuw geluid, geschreven door een voor mij onbekende auteur. Goodson Gramophone Record; een nieuw geluid!

De Gramophone is nog steeds het geliefd instrument voor vele families. Men heeft zelfs beweerd, dat de gramophoon nog boven de radio staat, omdat een goede spreekmachine meestal het grootste genot biedt aan de luisteraars. De radio, men moet ontegenzeggelijk eerbied hebben voor deze wonderlijke vinding, laat ons vaak zuivere, maar ook dikwerf onzuivere muziek hooren, een gevolg van de weersgesteldheid. Bij de gramophoon hebben wij met weersgesteldheid niets te maken; wanneer men een goede plaat zet op de machine, kan men overtuigd zijn, dat zoowel het gesproken woord als de zang volkomen zuiver weergegeven worden.

Toch heeft men wel eens de gramophoon veroordeeld, omdat het voorkwam, dat zoowel onder het spelen of door onvoorzichtigheid een plaat brak. Dit vinden de huismoeders en de huisvaders van belang, want nu heeft men zich een nieuwe plaat aan te schaffen, wil men niet, dat de collectie geschonden zou zijn. Heel vroeger werden gebroken platen tegen zekeren prijs teruggenomen. Het gebeurde immers zoo vaak, dat men onwillekeurig een plaat liet vallen of er op ging zitten en ook door andere oorzaken gingen veel platen verloren. Dit euvel heeft men nu weten te ondervangen. Het is de Goodson Gramophone Record co. Ltd. te Londen, die thans onbreekbare gramophoonplaten in den handel brengt. De platen zijn dubbelzijdig bespeelbaar en ook buigbaar, zoodat men deze platen kan laten vallen, want zij breken nimmer. Dit lijkt ons werkelijk een belangrijk voordeel, dat even naar voren gebracht mag worden.

Van niet minder belang is ook, dat de Goodsonplaten nagenoeg niets wegen, wat vooral bij boottochten enz. van groote waarde is. Maar boven alles komt hier uit de groote zuiverheid van toon, waardoor deze platen geprefereerd worden boven vele andere merken. De Goodsons - en het wordt gegarandeerd - kunnen meer dan 1000 maal bespeeld worden, voordat zij, wat men noemt onbruikbaar zijn. Een voordeel is het ook, dat zij automatisch stoppen op elke machine. De Goodson Record Co. heeft een groot repertoire muziek-, zang- en dansnummers samengesteld en elken dag nog verschijnen nieuwe platen, die door het publiek gunstig, wij zouden willen zeggen met enthousiasme, ontvangen worden.

Onder deze omstandigheden lijkt het ons niet overbodig onze lezers te wijzen op de nieuwe practische vinding van de Goodson Gramophone Record co. te Londen. Ieder, die van mooie, beschaafde muziek en zang houdt, moet bij zijn gramophonehandelaar het merk Goodson vragen. Goodson is juist in tegenstelling met andere platen van een witte kleur, zoodat men de platen gemakkelijk uit duizenden zal herkennen. Alle records zijn dubbelzijdig bespeelbaar en de prijs is naar verhouding billijker dan van elk ander merk ook.

Men late zich vooral een dezer dagen eens enkele nummers voorspelen om persoonlijk een oordeel te kunnen krijgen omtrent dit prachtige fabricaat. We wijzen er tenslotte nog op, dat de Importeurs van de Goodson Gramophone Record Ltd. Londen, zijn de heeren L. en E. Rohling te Amsterdam.

Dit nostalgisch stukje komt uit het weekblad HET LEVEN, eens één van de populairste weekbladen van Nederland en verschenen van 1906 tot 1941. Goodson maakte, behalve platen voor de commericële markt ook platen met daarop een advertentie geprint, vooral gericht op de Engelse markt. Wat te denken van advertentie voor Boots The Chemists (Always Open Day and Night), Wellsbach Lamps (United for Service To Give Good Gaslight), Henleys and British Record Washer Soap ( A free Goodson Record without advertising matter for Eighteen Cartons of Britisch record Washer Soap). In de onlangs verschenen bijdrage op de Flexible Records blog getiteld Goodson and Boots wordt geprobeerd een scan te plaatsen van alle 15 bekende Boots reclameplaten op het Goodson label. Er ontbreken er nog enkele: Wie kan er helpen?

Wie in onze tijd meent te kunnen beweren dat hij ongevoelig is voor reclame op internet, in kranten en tijdschriften, op tv - in reclameblokken of kunstig verstopt in soaps of films, is niet van deze wereld. Reclame of het aanprijzen van een product is van alle tijden. Op de markt verkocht zo vroeger de kwakzalver zijn wonderzalfje en tegenwoordig worden pillen met bijzondere uitwerkingen aangeboden op internet. Rond 1930 verscheen de onbreekbare plaat en in Het Leven, toen één van de meest gelezen weekbladen van Nederland, worden de kwaliteiten van de nieuwe plaat breed uitgemeten. Het originele artikel is afgedrukt en wekt hier en daar een glimlach op ieders gezicht ........ in feite is er niets veranderd!

Rent has arrived for the hard-working team at Shreveport Little Theater Academy. The edgy show has been re-worked for young audiences, says Robert Darrow; it has lost some language and one tune.

"Li Cunxin, the subject of the film "Mao's Last Dancer,", performed as a guest artist with the Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet in “The Nutcracker” in 1984, 1985, 1991, and 1994. In 1991, Li and his wife, Mary McKendry, shared the stage with current SMB Artistic Director Kendra Feazel Meiki, who was performing the role of “Clara” in “The Nutcracker.” Meiki has maintained a friendship with Li and McKendry since that time," writes Kate Pedrotty.

On Sunday, October 10 at 3:30pm, the Robinson Film Center and the Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet will host a special screening of Mao’s Last Dancer that will include commentary from Kendra Meiki and archival video from some of Li’s performances in Shreveport.

1. Beat procrastination! Teach your child, by example, not to put off tasks.
2. Instead of denying your son privileges for not studying, offer him rewards or incentives for getting his schoolwork done.
3. Get organized! Ensure that your grade-schooler has separate sections in her notebook for notes, homework, and graded materials for each class.
4. Make sure he's taking notes in class — not only for information, but because it will help him see how much time his teacher spends on a subject area.
5. After class or in the evenings, encourage your child to write a review of key ideas from each class.
6. Teach your daughter to be an active reader who outlines and annotates her textbooks. If she is not allowed to write in her books, have her keep these notes in a special notebook.
7. Encourage him to read through textbook sections before they're reviewed in class.
8. When studying for a test, suggest that your child arranges class and reading notes chronologically to ensure she's studying the appropriate material.
9. Help him create "fact sheets" of key ideas and terms scattered randomly on a page. If he can recall details in random order, they're stored in his brain.
10. A combination of memorization and concept comprehension will yield the longest-lasting and most complete knowledge.

The Lady Hornets Varsity Softball team had two wins in two games this week! In a double-header against Ruskin, North Kansas City dominated both games. In just three innings, the Hornets recorded shutout scores of 18-0 and 17-0. MacKenna Nolan pitched and won both games. With all players swinging the bats, hitters are too many to list. Swim/Dive
North Kansas City’s Griffin Schmitt qualified for state this past weekend in the 500 Free with a time of 5:05.92. The Hornets placed 7th out of 20 teams at the North Kansas City Schools Invitational. The team travels to Raytown this Friday to compete in the Eubank Invitational.

The Staley Swim and Dive team placed 3rd at the North Kansas City Schools Invitational this past weekend. The 200 Free Relay of Alex McIntyre, David Maynard, Jordan Milhon and Andy Herdman, and the 400 Free Relay of Alex McIntyre, David Maynard, Jordan Milhon and Nathaniel Vawter qualified for state. The Staley boys have now qualified all three relay teams for state competition.

Tennis
The Oak Park Girls Varsity Tennis team had a successful week. On Monday, they beat Staley 5-4. On Tuesday, they defeated Platte County 7-2. With the wins, the girls clinched the conference title. This is the team’s first conference title since 2003. The Varsity record stands at 10-2, with the JV record being 11-1.

Volleyball
The Lady Griffin Volleyball team ground out a win against conference foe Fort Osage Sept. 23. In addition to fighting off a tough Fort Osage team, senior Shelby Corkill became the 13th player in Missouri history to go over the 1,000 career kill mark.
