Sierra

Serie A 2010 2011 Juventus Udinese

Stadio Olimpico di Torino
30 january 2011

Referee: A. Giannoccaro
Attendance:17953

The Perfect Closing Argument

I might have missed some days in history class in high school, but I don't remember Thomas Jefferson ever telling you, "You can take that arrest warrant and shove it up your Communist *&%*."

Big News: Selena Gomez & The Scene to return with new album and single?

Disney pop princess Selena Gomez hasn't been doing much on the music front in terms of singles, but her and her band have kicked off their 2011 A Year Without Rain Tour in Puerto Rico, which she got some negative press for apparently, "not having scenography, back up dancers or clothing changes", playing to a stadium that had a 18, 500 spectator-limit. Hmmmm. Stick to the smaller stages, Sel.

Nevertheless, apparently the band are to start work on a new Spanish album and another English album. And they are to lift another single after US Top 40 single A Year Without Rain. GOOD. We really need another single. Personally, I don't think A Year Without Rain (the album) was good. It had way too much filler. And the only other track I can stand is Ghost of You.

In other Disney pop princess-related news, Demi Lovato's out of treatment centre which she admitted herself into last year. Props to her for sorting herself out. Now roll on the introspective third studio album.

Billboard Update

After Britney Spears breifly dethroned Bruno Mars' Grenade with Hold It Against Me, Mars has returned to #1 while Britney falls to #6 which gains the Airplay Gainer Title. The rest of the Hot 100 is exactly where you'd expect them to be, with Katy Perry's Firework at #2, Enrique Iglesias' guilty pleasure of a track Tonight (I'm Lovin' You) rising up to #4. Gaining some serious momentum is P!nk's F**kin' Perfect which manages to hit a new peak of #11 thanks to digital downloads. Taylor Swift also moves up with Back To December hitting #22 this week. Going from strength to strength is Christina Perri, who's Jar of Hearts has flown to a new peak of #26. Suffering a huge slip is Avril Lavigne, whose What The Hell has fallen to #31. No worries, Lavigne's music video premiered last week so you can expect it to go up on this week's chart. Adele's Rolling In The Deep is also pushing its way up the charts, hitting #84 this week. Rihanna's latest single S&M has re-entered at #90 this week.

Over on the albums chart, the entire Top 5 is filled with new releases with The Decemberists at #1, looking down at Kidz Bop Kids, The Script, Social Distortion, Gregg Allman in that order, while Bruno Mars' Doo-Wops & Hooligans falls to #6. Getting the Greatest Gainer Title is Katy Perry's Teenage Dream set, rising to #7 from #13 last week.

Lyric :

House full of roses, a letter on the stairs
A tape full of messages for anyone who cares
Collage of broken words and stories full of tears
Remembering your life cause we wish that you were here

Nothing is harder than to wake up all alone
Realize it's not okay, it's the end of all you know
Time keeps passing by, but it seems I'm frozen still
Scars are left behind, but some too deep to feel

And some say this can't be real
And I've lost my power to feel tonight
We're all just victims of a crime
When all's gone and can't be regained
We can't seem to shelter the pain inside
We're all just victims of a crime

Some days you'll find me in a place I like to go
Ask questions to myself 'bout the things I'll never know
What's left to find? Cause I need a little more
I need a little time, can we even up the score?

And some say this can't be real
And I've lost my power to feel, tonight
We're all just victims of a crime
When all's gone and can't be regained
We can't seem to shelter the pain, inside
We're all just victims of a crime

Nothing lasts forever, for all good things it's true
I'd rather trade it all while somehow saving you
It must have been the season that've threw us out of line
Once I stood so tall, now I'm searching for a sign

So don't need your salvation with promises and kind
And all the speculations, save it for another time
'Cause we all need a reason, a reason just to stay
And some just can't be bothered to stick around another day

And some say this can't be real
And I've lost my power to feel, tonight
We've all been victims of a crime
When all is gone and can't be regained
We can't seem to shelter the pain inside
We've all been victims of a crime

Victims of a crime
Living with this crime

I'm missing you
I'm missing you
I'm missing you
I'm missing you...

Michel Mainil - Reflections in Blue: Live concert at the Brussels Music Village

Michel Mainil - Reflections in Blue: live-optreden in de Music Village (Nederlands) Michel Mainil - Reflections in Blue: Live concert at the Brussels Music Village ( English)

A great live registration based on the hard bop tradition!
MICHEL MAINIL - REFLECTIONS IN BLUE: Live concert at the Brussels MUSIC VILLAGE
Hans Koert

Michel Mainil released a new album entitled Reflections in Blue, named after a James Williams composition. The Michel Mainil Quartet - Reflections in Blue album, was recorded live at the Music Village, a well known jazz club at the Steenstraat near the Grote Markt of Brussels. Michel Mainil performed with his quartet, featuring himself at the tenor and soprano saxophone, Alain Rochette at the piano, José Bedeur at the double bass and Antoine Cirri drums. The concerts took place in the first week of August, 2009.
Michel Mainil is born in La Louviere and studied at the Conservatory of La Louviere. As a student he discovered the music of Duke Ellington and became fascinated by the great reeds players John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Stan Getz. From the former he loved to listen to records like Blue Train and Afro Blue Impression. He played in all kinds of (jazz) bands, from traditional jazz to world music, before he left Europe for a few years to live in Cameroon, where he played with local groups. When he returned to Belgium he founded his band Nemesis with Pascale Loriers, Piet Verbiest and Guy Vaerendonck. He also directed the Michel Mainil Quintet with Paolo Loveri, Alex Furnelle, Alain Rochette, José Bedeur and Richard Rousselet. He played in a group, dedicated to the music of Monk, entitled A Monk's Flavour. During the last decade Michel is active in numerous groups and projects, too much to make a complete list, and this quartet is one of it.
The Michel Mainil Quartet released an album entitled Water and Other Games, recorded in La Louviere in November 2003 for Aram and this one, Reflections in Blue seems to be a logical follow up.
The album contains seven tracks, originally composed by some well known composers like Cole Porter ( Get Out Of Town), George Gershwin ( with one of the highlights from the Porgy en Bess suite, I loves You Porgy) and the Wayne Shorter tune, Footprints, which Shorter recorded in February 1966 for the first time with his Quartet for the Blue Note album Adam's Apple and which would become one of Shorter's best known compositions. Footprints is one of the lengthy tracks released on the Michel Mainil album, as most have a 10 minutes playing times - one of the joys of a live concert registration.

The seldom heard tune Mishima, a
David Schnitter composition, was, like the title track Reflections in Blue, only recorded in December 1978 by Art Blakey and his Jazzmessengers, in the period that David Schnitter played the tenor saxophone in that band. Michel Mainir ( photo courtesy: J-P. Stercq)

A remarkable choice is the tune Beija Flor, which opens with a piano intro by Alain Rochette and a great bowed solo by José Bedeur. It's a Brazilian song ( Beija Flor is a kind of hummingbird ) originally composed by Nelson Antonio da Silva, a guitarist better known as Nelson Cavaquinho. Nelson started his career at the cavaquinho, playing
Choro music, before he specialized in samba's. This tune has been recorded by the Peter Herbolzheimer Rhythm Combination & Brass May 1994 and recently by the Marco Cesar Sexteto Capibaribe and the quartet of the popular 12-strings cavaquinho player Hamilton De Holanda. Another stranger in the midst is the jazz traditional Just A Closer Walk With Thee with a less successful vocalized bass solo by José Bedeur.

The Michel Mainil Quartet features skilled jazz musicians like José Bedeur, active on both double bass as chello, who played with great names like Coleman Hawkins, Claude Bolling, Martial Solal, Johnny Griffin and Tete Montoliu; Alain Rochette, piano player and Michel Mainil know each other well and play for years together. Antoine Cirri, drummer, is also part of the Alain Cupper Quartet, the group of the Belgian baritone saxophone player and the group Jojoba, with Jean-Luc Pappi at the piano.

If you like jazz with its roots in the 1950s jazz tradition, like the hard bop, this album should be in your collection. You can order the album Reflections in Blue on this site.

The Michel Mainil Quartet recorded live at the Brussels Music Village jazz Club and the concert was released on an album entitled Reflections in Blue. Four skilled Belgian jazz musicians honour the jazz from the 1950s and 1960s with some rare heard tunes. Keep Swinging reviewed it - don't miss it. Mahotella Queens ~ Marriage Is A Problem [Shanachie, 1991]

1. Selailai [Attractive Woman]
2. Mokoka [Stamina]
3. Ba Bakoto [The Right Ones]
4. Dikhomo [Cattle]
5. Leselesele [A Thief]
6. Jive Makhona [Makhona Dance]
7. Mantshi [A Lot Of]
8. Kgarebe Tsaga Mothusi [Mothusi's Daughter]
9. Thonthodi [A Litter]
10. Nyalo Ea Tshwenya [Marriage Is A Problem]

'Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens were formed in 1963 at Gallo Studios; Mahlathini was the King of the Groaners, the Queens studio singers at Gallo for many popular artists (leader of the Queens, Hilda Tloubatla, also recorded tracks for the S.A.B.C. (South African Broadcasting Corporation) in the 1950's. After just eight years together with the backing band, the one and only Makgona Tsohle Band, the group split and a group of four understudies starting recording with fellow group Abafana Baseqhudeni under the Mahotella name - they produced one album, "Izibani Zomgqashiyo" of 1977 but Mbaqanga fans refused to buy the product. The original Queens, Hilda Tloubatla, Nobesuthu Shawe, Mildred Mangxola, Joyce Makhanya, Paulina Zulu and Thoko Nontsontwa (only the first four are shown on the album cover) rejoined Mahlathini and this album was the result.

"Marriage Is A Problem", sung in Sotho rather than Zulu, is a marvellous piece of work, with such classic tunes included; "Kgarebe Tsaga Mothusi", later recorded as "Thuntswane Basadi", features Mahlathini doing what he does best - growling! - whilst the last track "Nyalo Ea Tshwenya" features the Queens performing alone. The lyrics say "Marriage is a big problem, we thought we couldn't return but we have... we are touring all over the place, promoting our music."

As a bonus, the track "Mantshi" is a non-vocal track by the Makgona Tsohle Band, with a wonderful accordian lead, with the late Marks Mankwane, Joseph Makwela and Vivien Ngubane providing excellent guitar rhythm. A great "jive-tastic" album featuring THE professionals in Mbaqanga music. '

'Tse Hlwahlwa Tsa" was a Sotho-language "Best of..." series that Gallo/Mavuthela put out in the early 1980s. Each of their mbaqanga/soul artists had one of their own "Tse Hlwahlwa Tsa" releases, but oddly enough, the Mahotella Queens had two of them. I guess this is where the confusion lies! The first album featured songs recorded between 1970 and 1980, and the second album featured songs recorded between 1967 and 1975. Here are further details about the 2nd album to clear up any confusion:

Release date: 10 October 1983
Label: Gumba Gumba BL 456

A1) Marena
A2) Ba Bakoto
A3) Dikhomo
A4) Jive Makhona
A5) Mantshi
A6) Mathatha Aka

B1) Selailai
B2) Thonthodi
B3) Nyalo Ea Tshwenya
B4) Kgarebe Tsa Ga Mothusi
B5) Mokoka
B6) Leselesele

The second album was later re-released in the USA in 1991 by Shanachie Records under the title "Marriage is a Problem" [the English translation of 'Nyalo Ea Tshwenya']. 'Nyalo Ea Tshwenya' was originally released in 1975 on 45 rpm. There was no album released in 1975 with the title 'Marriage is a Problem'." ~ Nick Lotay

granted, the cover looks like ass, but vintage queens are no joke. further

European Cup 1976 1977 Borussia Mönchengladbach Dinamo Kiev

Semi Final, Second Leg
Rheinstadion, Düsseldorf
20 April 1977

Attendance: 72,000
