A frustrating evening in Amsterdam was topped off when Alex clinically put the visitors in front midway through the second half to earn Spartak a 1-0 victory and put them ahead in the tie heading back to Russia, where the Moscow outfit won the only previous meeting between the sides on Russian soil. So then, Ajax were made to pay for their woeful accuracy in front of goal last week with a bitter-tasting 1-0 home defeat. Now it’s well and truly advantage Spartak, with the second leg not only scheduled to be played on Russian soil but also on an artificial pitch.

However, Ajax can at least take some heart from Spartak’s dismal record at home in Europe this season, with Valery Karpin’s side having won one and lost two of their Champions League Group F encounters at their famous Luzhinik Stadium in Moscow, while they could only muster a 1-1 draw at home to FC Basel in their Round of 32 Europa League clash.
Furthermore, Ajax have now won their previous two away assignments in Europe, in impressive style as well. They beat AC Milan 2-0 at the San Siro on Match Day 6 in the Champions League while they dished out a 3-0 hammering to Anderlecht in Belgium during their Europa League Round of 32 clash.
Ajax are also the only club in Champions League history who have overturned a first leg home defeat to go on and clinch the tie, doing so back in 1995/1996 when, ironically, losing 1-0 at home before storming to a 3-1 aggregate victory with a 3-0 win in Greece over Panathinaikos.

Can the comeback-kings turn the tide for a second time? If so, it will be achieved without highly-rated goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, who recently broke his thumb and has been ruled out of the trip to Moscow. Moreover, old news perhaps, but they no longer boast the services of prolific Uruguayan international Luis Suarez, the former Amsterdammer having moved on during the January transfer window to Liverpool in England.
