The possibility of Real Madrid and Barcelona facing each other four times in less than a month has finally become true, and Saturday's Clasico features a derby in which the Liga title itself is at stake. But there's much more in the Spanish League than a dual fight at the top. Villarreal must secure a victory against Zaragoza to keep up with Valencia's pace, who've opened a six-point gap at the third position. Newly promoted Levante and Hercules take on each other for a decisive relegation fight. Levante has been unstoppable during the second half of the tournament and they need to demonstrate their strength against a direct rival to reach the upper half of the positions table and even dream with the European qualification. Espanyol and Atletico play another decisive game, in which the winner is likely to defy Sevilla as the owner of the fifth European place.

Getafe vs. Sevilla 18:00
The weekend’s fixtutres kick-off with a hopelessly out-of-form and relegation threatened Getafe hosting Champions League aspiring Sevilla. It seems far likelier that Michel’s side will be playing in the Segunda next season, especially given their astoundingly bad run of only one win in 15 games. All bad runs have to end somewhere though, and news that Getafe have been working with fan groups to try and fill the Coliseum will hopefully give the beleaguered Getafe players a sense of loyal home support.
Malaga vs. Mallorca 18:00
Manuel Pellegrini’s Malaga have the joint worst home record in the league and their hopes of survival depend on them finding some form in front of their own fans. Indeed, the Rosaleda turned 70 years old on Wednesday so a win would be a welcome birthday gift. They’ll also be helped by the return of Julio The Beast Baptista who has been out since February. Mallorca’s draw at home with Sevilla last week brought them one step closer to assuring survival although starman Jonathan de Guzman might miss out with a knee problem.
Almeria vs. Valencia 20:00
The team who shares the league’s worst home record with Malaga? Almeria. As was mentioned in our relegation feature yesterday, Almeria look a certainty for the drop as they lie seven points from safety. To make matters worse, star player Pablo Piatti might miss the game through on ankle injury. Valencia are in buoyant mood after their 5-0 thrashing of Villarreal consolidated third place and confirmed their superiority over the rest of the league (that’ll be all the teams except for Real and Barca).

The league might already be sown up for Barcelona, but this doesn’t take away from the occasion. There are enough protagonists, antagonists and subplots in here to write a novel. The two best players in the world come head-to-head whilst the scheming and sneaky dealings of José Mourinho are contrasted with the puritanical and righteous ways of Pep Guardiola. Moreover, it’s a meeting of two different philosophies as Barcelona’s cantera (youth policy) faces off against Real’s cartera (wallet). Spain braces itself for a clasico series, this being the first installment.
Deportivo La Coruña vs. Racing Santander 17:00
Deportivo’s 0-0 draw with Malaga was their seventh goalless stalemate of the season and they truly are one of the most morose teams we have seen in La Liga, taking the least shots and scoring the least amount of goals out of anyone. Racing have gone three games unbeaten and are edging towards the 40 point mark, although they will have to make do without Kennedy who has been ruled out for two weeks. Worse though for the Cantabrians is news that owner Ali Syed still owes his players €1.7 million from last season.

Before the season started, many would have predicted both Levante and Hercules to be dead and buried by this stage. As it happens, Levante are pushing their claim for team of the season, whereas Hercules and new manager Miroslav Dukic are plotting a great escape from a position that looked hopeless a month ago. Dukic said in a press conference recently that he wanted his players to feel ashamed if his side go down. It’s a pity that president Valentín Botella Ros doesn’t feel the same way for failing to pay his players wages or paying for hot water at the club’s training ground.
Real Sociedad vs. Sporting Gijon 17:00
Real Sociedad are in freefall, much the opposite of their opponents, who look to have secured their La Liga status with a run that has seen them lose only once in eight games. Sociedad would do well to toughen up a bit to stop their rut and they have only picked up 63 yellow cards all season, the second lowest in the league. It should be a decent atmosphere in the Anoeta, with the home support being given the tricky task of drowning out the 2000 travelling Gijon fans.
Osasuna vs. Athletic Bilbao 19:00
Osasuna’s dramatic rise up the table under the auspices of José Mendilibar has stalled in recent weeks, the defeat away to Gijon being their second in a row. Athletic are still battling for a Europa League place, and they will fancy their chances as their remaining seven games have them playing 5 teams in the bottom half of the table. Gaizka Toquero has warned that "all is not lost" if they don't manage to win this game, but Joaquin Capparos and his men have a great opportunity to achieve European football next season, starting here.
Espanyol vs. Atletico Madrid 21:00
Espanyol and Atletico are heading in different directions. Whereas Quique’s cohort have only lost once in eight games and currently occupy a Europa League spot, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have fallen from the dizzy heights of the Champions League places they reached in December. However, rumours of Quique’s imminent departure from the Calderon are as frequent these days as the sun in Madrid, and stories this week that goalkeeper David de Gea has sealed a move to Manchester United could derail what has appeared a promising push towards Europe and leave the door open for Espanyol to creep back in.

Villarreal booked their place in the semi-final of the Europa League with a resounding 8-2 aggregate victory over Twente last night. The league fixtures don't appear to be much more than a distraction, as the performance in the 5-0 thrashing to Valencia implied. Zaragoza have only won one game away from home all season and they sit three points above the drop zone. They are also a hefty 602 Euros worse off after being fined for throwing balls onto the pitch in the final moments of their victory over Getafe last week.
