District Activity Highlights

Cross Country
Winnetonka Cross Country runners Emily Clarkson and Kristen Stanton medaled in the 18-team Clarinda Iowa Invitational. The Griffins also picked up strong runs from junior Allie Maxwell and sophomore Dexter Acsenvil.

Football
Under the lights Friday night, district football teams took to the grid iron for some exciting match-ups. Staley shocked Class 6 powerhouse Blue Springs with a 27-16 victory on the road. Winnetonka had a nail-biter, losing 26-21 to William Chrisman in the final minute of the game at the District Football Stadium. Oak Park lost to Fort Osage 28-10 at the District Activity Complex and North Kansas City was defeated by Liberty 40-20 in Liberty.

Staley vs. Blue Springs
The Staley Falcons offensive line paved the way for three rushing touchdowns. The defense was a dominating force, limiting the Blues Springs Wildcats to a season low in rushing yards. Staley quarterback Michael Rich ran for one touchdown. Running back Evan Campbell ran 17 times for 114-yards and two touchdowns. Defensive back Jackson Long had 15 tackles, two interceptions (with one resulting in a touchdown) and caused a fumble. Defensive back Derek Hukill had eight tackles, one interception and caused a fumble. Linebacker Videl Nelson had 10 tackles. Staley plays conference opponent the Platte County Pirates at the District Activity Complex Friday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m.

Winnetonka vs. William Chrisman
William Chrisman secured a 26-21 win over Winnetonka in the final 1:24 of the game at the District Football Stadium. However, the Griffins surged down the field, driving to Chrisman’s 10-yard line with 18 seconds left, but an incomplete pass on fourth down ended their efforts for the night. Winnetonka quarterback Shaun Reyes put the Griffins on the board first with a 1-yard sneak for a touchdown. Fullback Jesse Robinson scored on a 7-yard touchdown run. Michael Townsend scored on a 59-yard touchdown pass from Reyes with 3:05 to play. Winnetonka takes on Belton in Belton on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 1:30 p.m.

North Kansas City vs. Liberty
The Hornets lost on the road to Liberty. However, quarterback Zack Benintende had six completions for 240 yards, and wide receiver Nick Stockdale had six catches for 145 yards.

Soccer
On the pitch this week, North Kansas City had a tournament loss on the road against Blue Valley. The final score was 0-5. The Hornets challenge Topeka on Friday.

After defeating Van Horn 1-0, the Staley Falcons walked away winners of the Winnetonka Soccer Tournament. Zach Cowart scored the winning goal and Mitch Gibler recorded the shut-out in goal. The Falcons also took on Savannah, playing to a 1-1 draw. Staley’s goal was scored by Luke Davenport.

Softball
North Kansas City came to the plate to face Lee’s Summit West on Sept. 8. The young team lost 16-1. Senior MacKenna Nolan had a single, and scored the solo run for the Hornets.

Oak Park vs. Staley
Oak Park and Staley met on the ball field at the District Activity Complex on Sept. 8 with Oak Park winning by a score of 8-2. Oak Park’s Caitlyn Gerdes hit a two-run homerun in the top of the second inning, increasing the Lady Oakies lead to 6-0.

Winnetonka’s bats came alive in their 15-4 win over Raytown this week. This was the first conference win for the Griffins, and every starter had at least one hit. Amber Spiller had three hits and scored four runs. Sydnee Schram hit it out of the park for a home run.

On Sept. 11, the Winnetonka Softball team hosts 12 teams at Happy Rock Park for their annual Invitational Tournament.

Swimming/Diving
North Kansas City diver, Carson Light, qualified for state on Sept. 8. This is his third year to qualify for the state meet. Carson is a senior, and captain of the diving team. His main goal is to break the Northtown diving record.

Tennis
The Staley Girls Tennis team played Lincoln Prep on Sept. 8, sweeping them in singles 6-0. Paige Allen, Brandi Sheppard, Tori Robbins, Margaret Gruhler, Christa Steinbach and Karen Patterson all played Varsity singles matches. When all play was complete, Staley won 7-2.

At the conclusion of their Sept. 7 match against Truman, the Oak Park Girls Tennis team remained undefeated with a record of 4-0. Varsity dominated Truman with a final score of 9-0. JV defeated their opponents 8-1.

Volleyball
Northtown and Oak Park met in a hard hitting match-up on the volleyball court Sept. 7. With thrilling spikes and stunning blocks by both teams, the Lady Oakies ultimately were victorious on their home court over the Hornets. JV won 25-23, 25-22. Varsity won 25-16, 25-23.

Staley and Grandview Varsity volleyball also played Sept. 8. The Lady Falcons won the match on their home court 25-6, 25-4.
