Two last seasons, FC Twente became a participant in the first stage of playoffs. In the last tournament of UEFA Cup the Dutch finished on second position in the group. In 1 / 16 "red" exchanged minimum (1:0) guest victories with Marseille Olympique, but in the penalty shoot-outs French were better. Last season, in the first tournament of Europa League FC Twente again took second place in the group. In the first match of 1 / 16 final against German Werder Dutch won at home - 1:0, but in the return game on a goal of de Jong Werder answered with four goals.

The last match before the meeting with Rubin, Twente held on February 12. In Dutch championship  the “Reds” beat a home Vitesse 1:0. The only goal at the 39-th minute scored Nasser Shadley.
