Jazz aux Champs-Elysees - a European broadcast of light music and jazz ( English) Jazz aux Champs-Elysées - Jack Diéval: De Franse Pete Felleman (Nederlands)

Eén van de populairste Franse radioprogramma’s uit de vijftiger en zestiger jaren van de vorige eeuw was ongetwijfeld “Jazz aux Champs-Élysées”, gepresenteerd door Jacques (= Jack) Diéval …. Une émission européenne de variétés et de jazz. ( = Een Europese radiouitzending met lichte muziek en jazz).

Presentator, producer en pianist Jack Diéval, de man met de pijp, geboren in september 1921, was in zijn tijd een populaire programmamaker, die het programma Jazz aux Champs-Élysées, meer dan twintig jaar presenteerde. Wat maakte het programma zo speciaal?

Je kunt het programma vergelijken met ons eigen Swing and Sweet from Hollywood and 52nd Street, dat vele jaren door de VARA radio werd uitgezonden en samengesteld en gepresenteerd werd door Pete Felleman. Dat programma was meer dan vijftig jaar in de lucht en werd een begrip en bron voor informatie voor de jazzliefhebbers uit die tijd. De muziek echter, die te beluisteren viel, kwam altijd van een gramofoonplaat, terwijl bij Jack Diéval de muziek live gespeeld werd, of te voren speciaal voor het programma was vastgelegd. Buitenlandse jazzmuzikanten, die Parijs aandeden, werden uitgenodigd om in het programma op te treden, met begeleiding van de JACE All-Stars (= Jazz Aux Champ-Élysées All-Stars), waarin een aantal Franse musici van naam verstopt zaten zoals René Thomas, Guy Lafitte en Roger Guérin, om er een paar te noemen. Een aantal buitenlandse gasten, die langskwamen waren bijvoorbeeld Lester Young, Donald Byrd en Bobby Jaspar, Walter Davis jr., Lucky Thompson, Chet Baker en Catharina Valente, Stéphane Grappelli, Stan Getz en de Delta Rhythm Boys.

Al deze genoemde artiesten zijn nu terug te vinden in een fraaie uitgave van het INA, zeg maar het Franse (Jazz)geluidsarchief, getiteld Jazz aux Champs-Élysées, waarbij een fraaie foto van de Delta Rhythm Boys op de voorkant prijkt. Een schitterend document voor iedereen die houdt van bijzondere radio opnamen van swingnummers uit de Europese jazzgeschiedenis met Amerikaanse musici uit de jaren vijftig. De opnamen zijn niet alle gemaakt in Parijs, maar ook in Brussel, Baden-Baden en bijvoorbeeld Cannes, onder de vlag van de Eurovision, het samenwerkingsverband van Europese omroepen. De geluidskwaliteit en de discografische informatie van deze (volgens mijn informatie) niet eerder uitgebrachte opnamen, is uitstekend.

INA, de equivalent van ons MCN, biedt op haar website een archief aan met zo'n 30.000 uur aan radio- tv- en filmopnamen ....... Een schatkamer!!

Jack of beter Jacques Diéval, de man met de pijp, was jarenlang de presentator van het Franse radioprogramma Jazz aux Champs-Élysées, dat wekelijks in de jaren vijftig en zestig van de vorige eeuw de lucht in ging op Paris-Inter met een selectie van lichte muziek en jazz. Buitenlandse muzikanten, op tournee door Europa, waren te gast bij zijn JACE All-Stars, waarin de beste Franse jazzmusici participeerden. Opnamen met grote namen als Lester Young, Stephane Grappelli, Chet Baker en Bobby Jaspar zijn nu uitgebracht door INA, het Franse muziekarchief. One of the most popular French radio programs on Paris-Inter from the 1950s and 1960s must have been “Jazz aux Champs-Élysées”, directed by Jack (= Jacques) Diéval …. Une émission européenne de variétés et de jazz. ( = A European broadcast of light music and jazz. )

Producer, host and piano player Jack Diéval, the man with the pipe, born September 1921, was a popular announcer during the 195os and 1960s and hosted the program for more then 20 years. What made the program so special?

Well - In Holland we had a similar popular radio program for the AVRO entitled Swing and Sweet from Hollywood and 52nd Street by Pete Felleman, which lasted for more then 50 years. The difference between Jack Dieval's Jazz aux Champs-Élysées program in France and Pete Felleman's Swing and Sweet in Holland was that the latter played gramophone records, while most of Jack Diéval's music was live or especially recorded for his program. The US musicians that visited France where invited to join the program, accompanied by the JACE All-Stars ( JACE: Jazz aux Champs-Élysées), with great names like guitarist René Thomas, Guy Lafitte and Roger Guérin, to list some. Thanks to the French INA ( the French Sound and Light archive) some of these recordings are re-issued on a cd entitled Jazz Aux Champs-Élysées L'émission culte de Jack Diéval. The album contains almost 2 dozen tracks from the 1955 - 1959 period with the foreign guests listed above.

The album contains extensive information about the musicians. A must is you love to learn more about these visiting jazzmen ......... and the European jazz history of the 1950s.

Jack or better Jacques Diéval, the man with the pipe, was the host and producer of Jazz aux Champs-Élysées, a weekly program on Paris-Inter with light music and jazz during the 1950s and 1960s with numerous US guests musicians who visited Europe. The musicians where accompanied by his JACE All-Stars, which featured the best French jazzmen of that moment. The INA released a great album with a selections of those concerts, featuring great names like Lester Young, Stephane Grappelli, Chet Baker and Bobby Jaspar.
