Op zaterdag 16 mei 2009 trad de New Cool Collective op in de stadsschouwburg van Middelburg als opwarmer voor het komende derde Internationale Jazzfestival eind mei 2009.

De uit acht man bestaande band, de New Cool Collective, geleid door Benjamin Herman, had twee gastspelers meegebracht naar de Zeeuwse hoofdstad: Jules Deelder, de Nachtburgemeester van Rotterdam, dj, cultfiguur, schrijver en dichter, drummer, rammelaar, saxofonist en de tenorsaxofonist Ger “Sax” Van Voorden. De band, die zo’n vijftien jaar geleden werd opgericht door Benjamin Herman, bracht deze keer op het podium, uiteraard, Benjamin op altsax en fluit, David Rockefeller op trompet, bugel en trombone, Anton Goudsmit op gitaar, Willem Friede achter de toetsen, Leslie Lopez bas- en sologitaar, Frank van Dok en Jos de Haas percussie en als laatste, maar niet de minste van het stel, Joost Kroon op slagwerk. Gasten: Jules Deelder, voordrachtskunstenaar, de-dichter-leest-voor, snare-drummer en tenorsax (eg wel) en Ger “Sax” Van Voorden op tenor, al jarenlang Deelder’s compagnon.

De eerste set werd geopend met de geweldige inkopper Trees and Grass and Things, begin jaren zeventig opgenomen door het Charles Williams Septet, gevolgd door nummers als Boca Arriba en Lang Lang, genoemd naar de gelijknamige pianist, waarin Anton Goudsmit, schitterde in een gitaarsolo op zijn welbekende expressieve energieke manier. (Het Engelse dagblad The Gardian schijnt geschreven te hebben: “Seeing Anton play his guitar, makes you wonder where the fire escape is”( = Als je Anton ziet spelen op zijn gitaar, vraag je je af waar de nooduitgang is).

Tussen de instrumentale nummers van de band bracht Jules Deelder, zoals altijd onberispelijk gekleed in zijn typerende outfit; zijn jaren vijftig vlinderbril; zijn haren scherp in de scheiding, zijn gedichten, zoals het nummer Jazzverleden en, in een gezongen versie deze keer, begeleid door het vette saxgeluid van Ger Sax en de schreeuwende bluesakkoorden van Anton, zijn gedicht: Blues on Tuesday. In zijn verhaal Romilar beschrijft hij zijn experimenten met het hoestmiddel Romilar, dat een gewild geestverruimend middel blijkt. Deelder beschrijft in het verhaal hoe ze, na gescoord te hebben in België, in Antwerpen in een kroeg spontaan freejazz gaan spelen: Een takke herrie en als de New Cool Collective haar versie geeft op deze muziek, is dat het teken voor het publiek, dat de pauze begint en verlaat de zaal om op zoek te gaan naar een pauze drankje. De echte die-hards, echter, blijven stoïcijns zitten; ik herinnerde me plotseling weer de sfeer (het geluid - het aantal mensen) bij de concerten uit de jaren zestig van Nieuwe Muziek, 40 jaar geleden, in deze zelfde schouwburg met muzikanten als Willem Breuker met zijn Kollektief, Maarten van Regteren Altena, Leo Cuypers en Han Bennink.

Bij de tweede set, na de pauze, begon Deelder met het opzetten van een LP van The Jazz Messengers uit de jaren vijftig met daarop het nummer No Problem, dat overgenomen wordt door de band. Jazz moet live opgediend worden, meent Deelder en daarin geef ik hem gelijk.

In de tweede set speelde de band weer een aantal, duidelijk door Afrikaanse elementen beïnvloede nummers als Lucoolmi, een nummer dat Benjamin graag speelt en al in de jaren negentig door hem werd vastgelegd op CD. Het publiek kreeg wat het had verwacht: een professionele band met vakkundige musici, snel gespeelde stukken met Zuid-Amerikaanse ritmen, ondersteund door een paar prima percussionisten ( ik herinner me een fraaie solo van Frank dok dok van Dok , energieke solos door Anton Goudsmit en vette licks van Ger Sax, die al jaren met Deelder samen optrekt in o.a. de groep Trio Me Reet + 2 .

Jules kon uiteraard niet om zijn Jazz Is Jazz Leeft (Gebeurt – Beweegt) gedicht heen en droeg ook het minder bekende Bumrap voor; speelde met zijn brushes op zijn snare-drum, speelde de dichter, die voorleest uit zijn nieuwste bundel met enkele tegeltjeswijsheden:, zoals Het licht in de tunnel is het naderend eind. stoïcijns en uitdrukkingsloos, pokerfaced, gezeten voor op het podium: als een levende karikatuur van de jazzfan uit de jaren vijftig. En zo wilde het publiek hem graag zien en die rol speelde de bijna 65-jarige graag.

Dit concert was één van de laatste in een lange rij van optredens en wellicht was dat de oorzaak van de ontlading, die zich op het podium voltrok. Iedereen genoot – het publiek incluis, al gingen mijn wenkbrauwen wel even omhoog bij het gezamenlijk aangeheven lied Toen Wij Uit Rotterdam Vertrokken, dat qua tekstbewerking thuis hoort in de We-Hebben-Een-Potje-Potje-Potje Potje-Veh-he-het traditie. Eigenlijk geloof ik dat dit concert beter gepast had in de programmering van het festival, buiten op het abdijplein, zodat het publiek de vrijheid had om mee te bewegen op de aanstekelijke ritmen; misschien is het een optie voor een volgend festival?
In hun toegift, Machowe, kregen alle musici nog een keer de kans om te schitteren.

Dit concert was het laatste in een serie van twee aanloopconcerten ( het eerste was het concert van de Noorse trompettist Nils Peter Molvær) op weg naar het Derde International Jazzfestival in het laatste weekend van mei. Tijdens deze drie dagen (Pinksteren) is er van alles te genieten voor liefhebbers van zowel de traditionele jazz als de meer progressievere stromingen: Wat te denken van Courtney Pyne, Gino Vannelli, Dave Holland, van de Australische New Orleans Ale Stars (o.l.v. Harriet Lewis ), onze eigen New Orpheans (met Eric Vloeimans() en een heleboel kleine en grote concerten op het sfeervolle abdijplein, de historische markt van Middelburg en de kroegen in het centrum. On Saturday the 16th of May, 2009, The New Cool Collective performed at the Stadsschouwburg of Middelburg, in the southwest part of The Netherlands, as the run-up for the coming International Jazz Festival of Middelburg, scheduled in the last weekend of May 2009.

The eight men of the New Cool Collective, directed by Benjamin Herman, had invited two special guest to tour Jules Deelder, Dutch poet, nicknamed Nachtburgemeester van Rotterdam (= the Night-mayor of Rotterdam) and his saxophone player Ger “Sax” Van Voorden.
The band, founded fifteen years ago by Benjamin Herman, features, of course, the leader on alto saxophone and flute, David Rockefeller on trumpet, fluegelhorn and trombone, Anton Goudsmit at the guitar, Willem Friede at the keyboards, Leslie Lopez bass guitar and solo guitar, Frank van Dok and Jos de Haas percussion. And, last but not least, Joost Kroon on drums.
Guests: Jules Deelder, speech, snare drum, tenor saxophone, promotor of bebop jazz and Ger “Sax” Van Voorden on tenor saxophone; Deelder's companion for years in bands like Trio Me Reet + 2..

The first set started with the great tune Trees and Grass and Things, a tune, originally recorded by the Charles Williams Septet in 1972. followed by tunes like Boca Arriba and Lang Lang, named after piano player Lang Lang, with a great guitar solo by Anton Goudsmit, in his typically expressive and energetic way of playing his instrument. ( The Guardian, an English news paper seems to have labelled him once as: “Seeing Anton play his guitar, makes you wonder where the fire escape is..." )

Between the instrumentals Jules Deelder brought his poems, dressed in his typically outfit, his 1950s pair of glasses and hair style, like Jazzverleden and, sung in a trio, accompanied by Ger's groovy sax and Anton Goudsmit's screaming chords: his poem Blues on Tuesday. In his story Romilar he described his experiences with this cough syrup and its effects playing free jazz in an Antwerp bar. The bands version of free jazz was the sign to leave the room for a drink; only some die-hards survived. It remembered me to the 1960s concerts of Nieuwe Muziek in this same Stadsschouwburg 40 years ago with musicians like Willem Breuker and Han Bennink.

The second set, after the break, started with Jules Deelder playing an old vinyl 33rpm LP record from the 1950s by the Jazz Messenger, which brought the members of the band back on stage playing the tune, No Problem, live in stead of canned music, as Jazz moet live opgediend worden (= Jazz should be served live.) as Deelder explained.

In the second half more African flavoured music by the band, like the tune Lucoolmi, which was recorded by Benjamin in the 1990s and belongs to one of his favourites. The audience got what it wanted - A professional show by skilled musicians, fast latin flavoured rhythms by the percussion group ( a great solo by Frank van Dok on conga), energetic solos by Anton Goudsmit and groovy solos by Ger Sax Van Voorden, Deelder's companion for years.

Jules Deelder, of course, didn't forget his famous Jazz Is Jazz Leeft (Gebeurt Beweegt ………) and the less known Bumrap, one of his rare English poems, recited some one-liners in Bundel ( Het licht in de tunnel is het naderend eind) and played, stoic, with a deadpan expression, his snare drums with his brushes, as a character of the 1950s jazz scene in front of the band. That's Deelder - that's what the audience expect from Deelder ...............

It was one of last performances in this setting; maybe that made it a pleasure to be part of it, although the collective sung folk tune Toen Wij Uit Rotterdam Vertrokken did raise my eyebrows. In my opinion, this concert would have been perfect as an open air performance at the inner court of the Abbey, where the people can make a choice to sit down or to dance. Maybe next festival! After the final tune, Machowe, the audience left tired, but well-satisfied in the night.

This concert was the final concert before the start of the Third International Jazz Festival of Middelburg in the last weekend of May with great names like Courtney Pine, Gino Vannelli, Dave Holland and a lot of more music to be schedulded in the attractive inner court of the Abbey or historical market place in the old centre of the city. Betty Boop For President

BETTY BOOP FOR PRESIDENT ...
Betty Boop for President - Obama for President.................. Well - we know what happened today. The film Betty Boop For President was released 76 years ago, on the 4th of November 1932 and as you might not know anymore, around that date there were elections too in the United States. Herbert Hoover, who was the 31st President of the United States, a republican, had been elected in 1928 and had brought the country in deep financial problems, due to the Stock Market Crash in 1929, the Great Depression. He wanted to be re-elected in 1932, but the democratic candidate Frankin D. Roosevelt, would become the new President of the United States for a dozen years ( he would be re-elected two times). Isn't it cute that Max Fleischer made this great cartoon Betty Boop For President?

When I enjoyed this great 76 years old cartoon, John McCain wasn't even born then, I got the feeling that every detail in this cartoon seemed to be a parody on these 2008 elections. What about the financial crisis nowadays? The recession - the Depression .......... what about the election campaigns of both Obama as McCain - of Betty Boop and Mr. Nobody? ...... Didn't I hear all these slogans before on television last months?
Betty: Some of you have money, While some are poor, you know, If you send me to Washington, I'll just divide the dough. - Now if you have a sister, And want a brother, too, Tell pa and ma to vote for me, I'll see what I can do! - Mr. Nobody: Who will make your taxes light?... Mr. Nobody! - Who'll protect the voters' right?... Mr. Nobody! Betty: What this country is in need of, is a lot of hi-de-ho, Boop-a-doop and chocolate ice cream. Now we will get things for nothing, Movies, cabarets and jazz! Mr. Nobody: Should you come home some early dawn, See a new milkman is on: Who cares if your wife is gone? Mr. Nobody. Betty: You have heard all my suggestions, and with me you will agree, Now we'll have a perfect country; These improvements you will see!

I found a little fragment of this Betty Boop for President, a bit re-shuffled - a parody on the 2008 elections. Enjoy it and .......... smile !

FLASHBACK: THE WEATHER FORECAST

Deze week ontving ik van Jaap en Marij onderstaande kaart met op de voorgrond Jules Deelder, wellicht de bekendste jazzverzamelaar van Nederland en bovendien door zijn publieke optredens het symbool van de bebop en hardbop jazz in Nederland geworden. Op de kaart wordt verwezen naar een oude opname van de Master Singers en Peter Sellers, die ik ooit in mijn verzameling had, en ooit eens verkocht heb. Het nummer The Weather Forecast herinnerde ik me nog prima .........

Ik vond een fragment van dit nummer, gezongen door de Master Singers, dat ik jullie niet wil onthouden, maar heb dat, helaas, niet meer op tape. Misschien dat Jaap dat ooit nog eens kan opdiepen uit zijn verzameling.
