VA ~ Laos: Lam Saravane - Musique pour le khène [Ocora, 1989] 320 / FLAC

C 559 058/ HM83

1. Nang Soubane Vongath & Sengphet Souryavongxay - Lam saravane
2. Nuothong Phimvilayphone - Nam phat khay
3. Khangdeuk
4. Khene
5. Mengphou tom dokmay
6. Pao sat

The vocal art lam [the dominant form in Laos] and the khen mouth organ [the national instrument], performed here by exceptional musicians. Refined classical music popular for its lively swing

one of the freshest laotian jams around, particularly the majestic mouth organ dronery of the resplendent nuothong phimvilayphone. owlwaze thought phimvilayphone would make a sweet name fer a record label, but anyway, we loves this ish. made possible by a joint effort from friendlies miguel & arvind

been on a bit of a mouth organ jag lately & am completely sprung on this exceptional recording. Isan is the Thai name fer the country's northeast region, the Khorat Plateau, bordered by Laos & the Mekong River on the northeast & on the south by Cambodia. Isan Slété are the Flower of Isan, six stalwart musicians who play the traditional musique of the region as it would have been performed before electricity or radio... & as it is still performed today, in the villages & markets of remoter areas, whenever somebody picks up a pin or khène & wants to play. 320 thanks to Ambrose Bierce of WeLove-Music fame fer ushering this into my consciousness. further
