Premier League 2010 2011 Arsenal Manchester United

Sunday 1 May 2011,
Day 35
Emirates Stadium,

London
Referee: C. Foy
Attendance: 60107

It could have been a championship mach of epic proportions, but instead today’s Arsenal v Manchester United 2011 Premier League match has been toned down significantly with Arsenal failing to capetalize on a number of opportunities over the past several weeks to stay close to the Red Devils. Still, Arsene Wenger and his men will want to end the season on a positive note, proving to the rest of the league that they’re on the same level as Man Utd. Arsenal vs Manchester United also presents the Guners with the opportunity to spoil Ferguson’s plans at a league title, something that at this stage of the season Arsenal will be delighted to play a part in.

Arsenal stand in 3rd place with 64 points. They’re in poor form recently, having won 2 and lost 1 of their past 8 games. Playing at Emirates, the Gunners have collected 30 points in 17 matches, including 2 wins in their last 5 played. Despite a return to fitness, Belgian defender Vermaelen will not take part in the game, with Djourou continuing to fill at that position. Diaby will also miss out on the clash of giants but Rosicky could make a return in today’s Arsenal v Man Utd match. Wenger has been under heavy criticism after failing for 6 years running to capture any silverware, so the consolation prize will have to come with a win over United today.

Manchester United travel to London with a recent form where they have let in 7 goals and dropped 8 points in their past 5 matches away from Old Trafford. Alex Ferguson’s side are underdogs against Arsenal today, but the focus will be on adding to to their 73 point total and strengthening their 1st place position in the league. United have one foot in the final at Wembley for the Champions League final, but they will first want to take care of things on the homefront. Chelsea are 6 points behind but with a United loss today, they could have their fate in their own hands as a match against Man U awaits. Paul Scholes is still missing through suspension, Fletcher is doubtful, Berbatov is likely to come off the bench, while Rio Ferdinand is likely to be given a rest after a tough series of matches.

English Leagues the 60s: Liverpool Arsenal Division One 1964 1965

First Ever Match of The Day
22 August 1964
Anfield Road

Kenneth Wolstenholme's words were mildly prophetie: 'Welcome to Match ofthe Day, the first of a weekly series on BBC 2. This afternoon we are in Beatleville...' It wasn't only John, Paul, George and Ringo who were putting Merseyside on the map. The Kop at Anfield, witry and refreshing, were signalling the arrivai of a new force in the English game Bill Shankly's Liverpool.
The champions opened their programme against Billy Wright's Arsenal, and if the game was memorable for the BBC, it certainly wasn't for Don Howe, the England full-back making his Arsenal debut. Howe was up against Peter Thompson, Liverpool's flying left-winger, who helped set up the opening goals for Roger Hunt with a splendid volley, and Gordon Wallace, deputising for the injured lan Stjohn.
But Arsenal retaliated. Geoff Strong, who ironically joined Liverpool soon afterwards, pulled a goal back, and then Joe Baker headed the equaliser. Every new production needs a fitting climax, and the armchair viewers got one when Wallace struck the winner three minutes from time.
In the second half, a black cat delayed the taking of a corner by running across the Liverpool goalmouth. The BBC had got lucky with their first Match ofthe Day.
Liverpool: Lawrence, Byrne, Moran, Milne, Yeats, Stevenson, Callaghan, Hunt, Chisnall, Wallace, Thompson. Scorers: Hunt, Wallace (2)
Arsenal: Furnell, Howe, McCullough, Snedden, Ure, Simpson, Armstrong, Strong, Baker, Eastham, Andersen. Scorers: Strong, Baker

The TV cameras were treated to a classic. Liverpool raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to Roger Hunt and Gordon Wallace, only to see that advantage cancelled out as the north Londoners drew level with goals from Geoff Strong and Joe Baker. But, not for the last time, Liverpool and Arsenal produced a moment of late drama at Anfield, as Don Howe, who had been tormented throughout the 90 minutes by Liverpool winger Peter Thompson, deflected a Wallace shot past his own goalkeeper, Jim Furnell, with just 60 seconds left on the clock.

Premier League 2010 2011 "The North London derby" Tottenham Arsenal

20 April 2011
White Hart Lane, London

Referee: M. Atkinson
Attendance: 36138

English Leagues the 70s: Ipswich Town Arsenal FA Cup 1977 1978

Final
6 May 1978
Wembley, London

Attendance: 100,000
Referee: Derek Nippard

Arsenal, though strong favourites, soon began to lose their grip on the game after a promising start had seen them gain two corners in the first two minutes. Some of Ipswich's combined movements were a delight to watch, as they gradually overran Arsenal's midfield.
Poor Liam Brady, obviously not fully fit, could do nothing right and was substituted after 66 minutes.

In spite of their ever‑increasing superiority, the East Anglians had nothing to show for their efforts at half‑time. They finally got the breakthrough with just twelve minutes remaining, but before then Ipswich had deserved to score from each of three brilliant second‑half moves. Wark crashed a terrific shot against an upright after Woods had rolled the ball into his path, and then a similar Ipswich attack gave Wark the chance to hit the same post with another effort. Soon afterwards Jennings made the save of the afternoon from Burley's header.
With Ipswich beginning to wonder what they had to do to score, the long‑expected goal arrived. Inside‑left Geddis ran with the ball from near the half‑way line and fooled both Hudson and Nelson by feinting to cut inside and then using a sudden burst of speed to go outside them. Young merely cleared Geddis' low cross as far as Osborne, standing ten yards from goal, and he promptly dispatched the ball into the net.
