English Leagues the 70s: Ipswich Town Arsenal FA Cup 1977 1978

Final
6 May 1978
Wembley, London

Attendance: 100,000
Referee: Derek Nippard

Arsenal, though strong favourites, soon began to lose their grip on the game after a promising start had seen them gain two corners in the first two minutes. Some of Ipswich's combined movements were a delight to watch, as they gradually overran Arsenal's midfield.
Poor Liam Brady, obviously not fully fit, could do nothing right and was substituted after 66 minutes.

In spite of their ever‑increasing superiority, the East Anglians had nothing to show for their efforts at half‑time. They finally got the breakthrough with just twelve minutes remaining, but before then Ipswich had deserved to score from each of three brilliant second‑half moves. Wark crashed a terrific shot against an upright after Woods had rolled the ball into his path, and then a similar Ipswich attack gave Wark the chance to hit the same post with another effort. Soon afterwards Jennings made the save of the afternoon from Burley's header.
With Ipswich beginning to wonder what they had to do to score, the long‑expected goal arrived. Inside‑left Geddis ran with the ball from near the half‑way line and fooled both Hudson and Nelson by feinting to cut inside and then using a sudden burst of speed to go outside them. Young merely cleared Geddis' low cross as far as Osborne, standing ten yards from goal, and he promptly dispatched the ball into the net.

Uefa Cup 1982 1983 Ipswich Town As Roma

First Round, Second Leg
Portman Road
Wednesday, September 29, 1982

Attendance: 17751
Referee: Mr V Christov

In the face of their mountainous UEFA Cup first round second leg task gallant Ipswich Town gave the sort of spirited show that would have done
justice to the legendary Sherpa Tensing himself.
The East Anglians excited the home fans with an effort full of all the spirit and determination they could muster and in the 54th minute that summit of a possible place in the second round came into clear view when Steve McCall put them two goals ahead.

The Italians were rocked but just when it looked as though the "Roman Empire" was about to fall about their ears Aldo Maldera rifled in from just outside the penalty box with what was their first real on target effort. Ipswich, who had been given the lead in the 41st minute by the transfer seeking Gates, were then faced with the prospect of having to score three times to win the tie as away goals count double in Europe. Terry Butcher, playing up front as Town threw caution to the wind, pulled back another with a header in the 71st minute, but the Italians held on to go into the draw for the second round in Zurich tomorrow. So for the second season in succession Ipswich go out of the competition they won in 1981 at the first hurdle. And what is even more galling for them is that this time they do so sadly rueing two defensive errors from
the first leg in Rome which they lost 3-0.

Following on from that record breaking league win at Notts County on Saturday, Bobby Ferguson's side again showed that they are still a big soccer power in the land and confidence remains high for the two clashes with champions Liverpool that are looming. Roma, who lost World Cup wizard Bruno Conti with injury after 25 minutes, did not adopt a cynical attitude although they defended stoutly and got men behind the ball at the first opportunity. However, Ipswich exploited the ever growing gaps that there were and they were defied by some fine first half goalkeeping from Trancedi
including a magnificent stop from the rejuvenated Thijssen. The cool, resilient approach that manager Ferguson was asking for was evident as Town began their task and early on Thijssen and Gates combined well to set up Brazil who saw a shot well saved...( Pride of Anglia - Ipswich Town Football Club site)

Ipswich Town Play-Off Champions 1999 2000

Football League First Division
play-off 2000

As the 1999/2000 Division One season came to a close, long-suffering Ipswich fans prepared themselves for their team's fourth consecutive appearance in the play-offs. Further heartbreak seemed on the cards as their semi-final opponents Bolton raced into a 2-0 lead in the first leg, but the tie was level by the final whistle. High drama followed in the return match with Ipswich snatching a last-minute equaliser to take the tie into extra-time - which they duly won. The Wembley final saw Ipswich's nerves jangling yet again with Barnsley taking an early lead, but class ultimately told as the Suffolk side ran out 4-2 winners. All the action from the three games is captured here.
